This was a exception,since north koreans are not allowed to speak or even stare at tourists, it was a disgrace for the guides, but the population didn't notice. They only get one information, and what do you/we believe? 1 + 1 = 2, why? No one can understand that these people REALLY believe the stories about kim jong il, for example the story that when he was born 1912 in a house, it was winter, and soldiers nearby felt that something wonderful had happened and scratched some words into a tree... that tree later of course was a holy place until one japanese tourist, a botanist looked at the tree and said that the message can't be from 1912 because the tree didn't exist than, it was cut and and its not allowed to go there now...
The newer docus: traffic policewoman which regulated the non-existent traffic years ago, strange to see, 1 car every 5min, next to the exclusive hotel, but she moved every 20 seconds. Now really cars are driving, they even produce a own car with southern help, in pjöngjang there are markets where you can buy electronics and much things from china, earlier only high party members were allowed to shop in china. Earlier 150 tourists each year, now many thousands with $, that is the reason I guess.

The principle of equal income for everyone is a bit flawed. Not all jobs require the same amount of sacrifice some jobs require more than others. Without income inequality who wants to take the shitty jobs for the benefit of society, not many.

@Stef9553 Wow, really hard to believe, I thought when I look for english speaking docus I will find 2010/2011 US-docus, but well ok for US-People it was almost impossible to get a tourist visa (only for a short period where a festival is taking place visas for US and south koreans were granted, since 2009 even US-People get a visa. The French/German station ARTE, one of the best docu channels in the world, has some docus from ~2007 (and earlier) and some from 2009. It really got better
@Stef9553 one early video, a group of trainfans, one east-german with connections, so they got a visa and were allowed to film trains usually this is seen as part of military and strictly forbidden. They paid much €uros for this, for additional cash they brought a old steam locomotive to drive over a bridge a short distance (the last "working" of their kind), they used old car tires to fire it because there was no coal, the driver was very nervous, I think he didn't know if it works.

may i first say that i am neither approving or disapproving of north korea. i don't know enough about the country and therefore i cannot give my opinion. however, i am always wary of western "documentaries" on other lesser known countries.
this is my comment about the video: the first half of the video reeked of condescending overtone (most notably: 0:15-0:22, 0:33-0:57, 4:15-4:27) and 6:31-6:39 was blatantly condescending and consider it anti-north korean propaganda.

They try to fool foreigners with their showcase city Pyongyang but it doesn't work, people from other countries know how bad it is in North Korea, the fact that tourists can not leave the hotel they're staying in and can not go anywhere without a guide and without being followed and watched by secret police shows that they have alot to hide and that they don't want foreigners to know and see how bad things really are there, the propaganda and facade doesn't fool foreigners.
