Russian is certainly the best, then the French, the British and the Spanish would come next I think. The Italian is beautiful too but when you listen to it, it sounds like there are two songs put together to make it an anthem (0:33 to 1:30 is one and from 1:31 onwards another one). But still, it's part of my favorites!!!

"The best anthem ever" is not for the nation, but the anthem as anthem, as music, as interpretation, as coreography.
Of course, we can't talk about the words of an anthems..
I think every nation has is the better anthem for it also the best anthem for Italy isn't that, for me and for many ather italians, but wrote by Giuseppe Verdi in a freemasonery style) , but, of course the 'sense' of title "The best anthem ever" was for the quality of music, coreography and interpretation..
It's all very subjective, isn't it? The national anthems of France and Germany are probably the best known because each are particularly stirring in their own way. Italy, Spain, Great Britain, The Netherlands and Japan are also quite listenable. There are some less than impressive national anthems, but I won't name them out of respect for their citizens.
For a second I was worried. But then you were talking about the musical aspect.
I agree that I've thoroughly enjoyed the music of almost everyone's national anthems.
The lyrics, on the other hand, sometimes turn up crappy. And when you translate a national anthem? More often than not the translated version is awkward and no longer flows as well as the original. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the lyrics, Italy's for example, but some countries just...ugh, bad lyrics. So bad.

The concept of comparing national anthems is a despicable one and often brings out the worst in many people. It's always hard to differentiate MUSICAL quality from nationalistic fervor.
Perhaps the German's are simply smarter by having chosen a string quartet by the truly great composer Joseph Haydn as their anthem. It's a gorgeous piece of music originally written without words or political overtones.
But be careful playing the silly "my anthem is better than yours" game !
@maxreger100 I wholeheartedly agree. I love anthems. I sing them if I like them. Love the melody of the US anthem even if its text is a bit... well, combat related. But I don't really think us Germans were particularly smart when choosing the anthem. Although I like that our anthem has been chosen in a peaceful context and expresses early Germany's desire for unity without mentioning war at all. Well, I love the Marseillaise, I don't understand it so it only sounds good. :D

We have a tradition of war, we invaded Britain, we became the largest empire in the world, we fought more large empires and finally some crazy dude made us fight everybody in his struggle to conquer the world. War is everywhere but how much pride do we take in it and why? German weaponry is top notch, should we sing about it? Just saying.
@LootFragg thats a loose basis for an argument. Germanic tribes wern't the same people as are in Germany today, many moved. or moved in. And you never had much of an empire. As far as German weaponry being top notch, it should be. A lot of it is American equipment.

And I don't know about your definition of an empire but 1000 years of a German Kaiserreich spanning bloody Europe sounds kinda empire-ish to me. And how's German weaponry American? "The best anthem ever" is not for the nation, but the anthem as anthem, as music, as interpretation, as coreography.
Of course, we can't talk about the words of an anthems..
I think every nation has is the better anthem for it also the best anthem for Italy isn't that, for me and for many ather italians, but wrote by Giuseppe Verdi in a freemasonery style) , but, of course the 'sense' of title "The best anthem ever" was for the quality of music, coreography and interpretation..

It's all very subjective, isn't it? The national anthems of France and Germany are probably the best known because each are particularly stirring in their own way. Italy, Spain, Great Britain, The Netherlands and Japan are also quite listenable. There are some less than impressive national anthems, but I won't name them out of respect for their citizens.

For a second I was worried. But then you were talking about the musical aspect.
I agree that I've thoroughly enjoyed the music of almost everyone's national anthems.
The lyrics, on the other hand, sometimes turn up crappy. And when you translate a national anthem? More often than not the translated version is awkward and no longer flows as well as the original. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the lyrics, Italy's for example, but some countries just...ugh, bad lyrics. So bad.

The concept of comparing national anthems is a despicable one and often brings out the worst in many people. It's always hard to differentiate MUSICAL quality from nationalistic fervor.
Perhaps the German's are simply smarter by having chosen a string quartet by the truly great composer Joseph Haydn as their anthem. It's a gorgeous piece of music originally written without words or political overtones.
But be careful playing the silly "my anthem is better than yours" game !

@maxreger100 I wholeheartedly agree. I love anthems. I sing them if I like them. Love the melody of the US anthem even if its text is a bit... well, combat related. But I don't really think us Germans were particularly smart when choosing the anthem. Although I like that our anthem has been chosen in a peaceful context and expresses early Germany's desire for unity without mentioning war at all. Well, I love the Marseillaise, I don't understand it so it only sounds good. :D

And why am I even arguing? My point was that the anthem tells about bombs, rockets and fighting a bloody war, which is a bit messed up in my opinion. Justifying it with war being part of your history is just lame.
