It's not that the rhythm section sucks, it sounds completely different because he changed the structure of the song. Dave F. is a good bassist, but it's like a different song. Elvis has done this kind of thing before; he used to play a different version of High Fidelity that was slow and brooding, much different than the Get Happy version. I like the original better, but c'mon, it's 20-30 years later! Things change, but these guys are still great!
Great versions - especially Go To Chelsea! As for not being 'angry enough', I like hearing him play around with the songs: it's testament to how solid they are in the first place. If you want it to sound like the album then listen to that instead!!
come on..its just a tv show, i still like the bass live though and the band seems to please mr costello, anyways, there must be a reason why hi kept this band for a while...shoot me if im wrong.
what a lame audience , what with the handclaps. they obviously weren't down with EC back in 77-78. Thanks to my older brother, i've been listening to Elvis from the get go, he's been a tremendous influence on my life. Saw him live in 81, 84 and 96.
um, this audience was in the ed sullivan theatre, where you're pretty much forced to do whatever they ask, what with the "applause" signs and all. i am a die-hard elvis costello fan, as were most of the people there. it was a free show and you were notified with only a couple days' notice that you would be allowed into the show, so most of the people sacrificed a lot to be there.
actually, scratch that. i was speaking of the hour-long concert that followed this performance. here we only see letterman's crowd, who may very well only be there for letterman (or to do something tourist-y in the city).
2:27 - really gotta get a new keyboard stand, this one's kinda wobbly

Davy Faragher is a great bassist but he doesn't synch with Elvis Pete and Steve here like Bruce did.

Rhythm section sucks.
Nothing compares to the Attractions.

There's only a one-man difference between the Imposters and the Attractions -- so I'd say it is pretty comparable.
