Hi 1Step. Good review. Nice vids with TNP too. But regarding the GunVault, I'm considering mounting it upside-down under my bedside table. Do you know if it can be mounted upside down? With the door being spring-loaded, I imagine it should still work. Also, is the ENTIRE internal surface foam-lined so I can do this? Thanks in advance, AM.
@aliasmunky All signs point to this working. I just checked the strength of the spring on the door. It looks like it will pop up OK. As for the foam padding...it goes all the way around. Let me know your results!
saw one revew few days ago u smack the front and it popped open...dont remember which one it was but might want to search it...good lck with it...i sleep with mine under pillow and another arms reach from my night stand...yeah i might b a lil paranoid but that is the life we live in now...
@abenewson Thanks for the heads up. I've been told about that before. Since I actually own one I can speak to it's performance. I have hit the safe hard all over and no unlocking... I would be the first to post about a potential flaw. Sounds like the other guy you saw had a bad one. He should send it in to the company for repair/replacement. Seems like there are more people with positive reviews on this safe than one or two others who've had problems.
Thanks for the review. I'm about to order one on Amazon. About the pop open door, I saw that too and read about it on a few forums. From what I've read several places, that was a defect on a batch of mini vaults manufactured Apr 2008 due to a bad vendor part which caused it to fail to lock at all. The tapping just bounced open the unlocked door in that video.
@abenewson its not a safe its a vault to keep it away from kids and other dangerous hazards in the night and it is quik and easy to unlock a safe is were you put your personal belongings so no one can get it :) hope it helpt you
mechanical simplex lock are much more reliable but more expensive and harder to find but two brands are V-line and Fort Knox (Rolls Royce of handgun safes) gun vault has 16 gauge steel. Weak compared to 10 gauge (.1406 inches) of lock safe and Fort knox. but ok. gunvault has one extremely dangerous flaw as the safe gets older or even sometimes out of the box it can be opened by a well placed knuckle tap on the latch. that will get someone killed and is the reason why i say avoid this safe.
@fusionchef1 Thanks for the info. I'm pretty confident in "Gun Vault" products. I will be sure to let my subscribers know if anything changes. I would recommend that anyone who experiences a faulty safe/lock return it to the manufacturer for repair/replacement. Again there is a trade off between quick access and complete lockup. YMMV.
Nice vid thanks for posting. I have the larger version that I ended up securing inside an armoire using 4" lag bolts driven into a stud in the wall (very secure)
For those who want to use the power supply, I would also recommend a battery back-up. If your power is cut or goes off in the middle of the night, it will make it easier to gain access rather than hunting down a key or relying on AA batteries.
The only complaints, interior light is weak, and the motion alarm is worthless IMO.
why hide the combination?99%of people watching dont know u mr.if u showing ur new toy why cover it wiyh ur hand?shoul of used a temporary code!miauuuu
@SVTMQZ What are you talking about dude...his kids or nieghbor or somebody...common its the world wide web,I would do the same thing and hide my code.5/5 good rev!!
I would imagine that I could buy a led bulb from radio shack that has two metal prongs (for lack of a better term) and plug it into those holes I see on the board. They couldn't give me what size bulb they use, or part #. Could you check for me and see what you see on your delux model?
I don't have the deluxe model either, but I think SirJabsAlot is getting one. Maybe he could help answer that question better. Its a good idea if it works... No guarantees that the board is actually wired for it though. From what i've seen the light is pretty dim and I'm not sure it's worth the trouble. Send a PM to SirJabsAlot if you're still interested. I think he'll have his deluxe soon.
thanks. After I looked further into it. There are actually three holes in the board, not two. So now I'm confused. I'm gonna check out your vid on the tlr-3 though. Ironically enough, I was just checking these lights out.
hey, I have the same safe but the standard model, mine didn't come with the plug, alarm, light, or cable. I called the manufacturer with little help regarding the led bulb. If you can help me it would be greatly appreciated. When I looked inside my safe using a flashlight and a little mirror to see the roof, I see a circle hole where the light bulb should be. Inside that hole there is a green computer board (same board that the battery tray is wired to) with two pin holes in it. continued.....
Well considering that I want quick access to my weapon, I don't think a wall safe is practical. If I were to want to lock away my gun for safe keeping I'd use my large vault safe elsewhere in my home. I can't imagine a wall safe is cheaper. Not to mention ease of installation. This system works well for me. Hope yours works for you.
If you paid any attention the safe is bolted down... to the floor... meaning its not going anywhere... hence it's a safe. Besides I don't let random idiots into my house and let them take stuff from me. Hence my gun!
Those screws looked pretty bad.. id go pick up some bolts if you really wanna make it hard.. otherwise I suspect if someone wanted to steal it.. a simple swing of a sledge hammer and its off the floor.
Just an honest thought.. we're trying to help you is all.
I have one of these and I thought it was great until my wife BROKE INTO IT IN ABOUT 10 SECONDS WITH A SCREWDRIVER! when she forgot the code. Absolutely NO SECURITY. Simply ply the door open with a standard screwdriver. I would not recommend this at all.
I understand it's not the most secure safe in the world, but I wasn't looking for unbreakable. I want quick easy access to my weapon to protect my home without fumbling around in the middle of the night. It serves the purpose of keeping my gun away from someone finding it sitting out. Besides there are a lot of locks and safes that people can break into if you really wanted to... They are designed to deter this and work as such for the most part. Tell your wife to use the key next time!
do the gunvaults come with the secuirty cable or is that extra money we need to spend? Im thinking about getting the standard GV1000 to store my Sig Sauer SP2022 when Im not around.
The security cable is extra. You can purchase this item on GunVault's web site. I don't think you really need it though if you plan on bolting the safe down to the floor etc. The cable is mainly used to tie the safe down to an immovable object when you don't have it secured otherwise.
I got the deluxe mini. Those batteries were a b--ch to install due to my large hands. There is a motion detector alarm; not too loud but effective and like you said it does come with that AC adapter but there no outlet where I'm putting it so it doesn't matter.
Yes there are six holes. The two in the rear of the safe have slots that have enough room at one end for a screw head to fit in. Once you drive both rear screws into the floor you place the safe's holes on those heads and slide the safe forward to lock them in place (there is third hole in the middle of these two, but very hard to get to because you would have to screw down from inside the safe). The front of the safe has three more holes, all of which get screwed down from inside.
The safe only comes with 3 screws so be prepared to add more if you want better security. Also, I highly recommend using a socket wrench to drive in the front screws. It was impossible to get an angle on the screw heads with a standard screw driver and a mini screw driver wouldn't fit inside. If you want the smoothest finnish under the foam so the screw heads don't poke up try using a wood screw with a tapered neck/head. This will keep the foam flat in front.
its not even that safe

I used several 1/4 20 carriage bolts to secure mine. There would be a whole lot of time and noise to dislodge it. It was an additional $1.

I was thinking of getting a little handgun safe like that to hide in my nightstand.
So even if the electronics fail you can use the key to open?
