@MrJuha82 wow, Sammy beat brown, i watched it fifty times he out landed brown, and grappled whatever it takes to win. In the byers fight he basically fought him with one arm, he arm got tied up in his own jersey, he well with one arm. Beat miller in the second fight, and who bled more in their fights, Sammy or Hunter?
Probert had such great balance and patience. He could keep his wits and balance even when the guy had his shirt over his head. If I didn't know better I'd think he did some Judo as a kid.
Bob Probert won a lot of fights because he always got his sweater off so the other fighter couldn't hold onto him to throw punches. Wendel Clarke sure fixed that situation back in 92.
@wovokanarchy How did he fix that? Dec. 9th? I didn't realize that getting knocked down by a mean right hook was teaching the other guy a lesson. Look around on youtube. You'll find way more fights that Probert won without his jersey coming off. And most of the ones it does come off, you'll notice it's the other guy trying to blind Probert with the jersey. Because they're scared and know they couldn't outright beat him.
@rwargo24 Sorry mate, you should learn the mechanics of hockey fighting. Probert realized that if your opponent couldn't grab onto your jearsy they were at the mercy of your dukes. Probert couldn't beat Clarke and that's a fact.
@wovokanarchy I know the mechanics of hockey fighting. I've been in that position on more than one occasion. And I never tried to pull out of my jersey unless the other guy had already pulled it half off. Probert did beat Clark. Dec. 9th 1992. Watch it. Knocking the other guy down by punching, not tackling or wrestling, is a definite win. That's a fact.
@rwargo24 Rubbish, I just saw the fight and Clark was not knocked down by a punch, in fact, it was a draw. Considering Probert had 4 inches and 30 pounds over Clark and still couldn't beat him what does that say about the legacy of Probert?
@wovokanarchy clark learned from getting beat down in the first fight.tie him up get in close throw fast punches and wait for the authorities.smart strategy.
Semenko had a look on his face like he wished he would have retired the season before. He was never the same after this fight and it pretty much ended his career.
@davemccarthy707 Semenko tripped over his dignity, or lack thereof LOL .... this fight was never a draw from the first second; one of the few fights in history where the linesmen weren't even needed. Probert punches gutless dirtbag to the ice, Probert skates away, Gutless Dirtbag trips on dignity. It never worked out so well for Semenko when he didn't start throwing punches with the other guy not looking
@justice008a Semenko would have given him a better fight at one time. But at this time here with Probert, Semenko had already fought anyone and everyone and was at the end of his career. So go fuck your hat!
@hornetsnest001 anyone and everyone?? OK tell me how Semenko did against Gillies, Fotiu, Holmgren, Beck, Plett, McSorley, Cochrane, Berube, Richter, etc., etc. Semenko's resume is oddly empty against all those "anyones" he never had the balls to fight. How does his resume look against Hunter, Wilson, and Playfair? Embarrassing?? Hell yes, when you get pounded by guys who can fight. Semenko actually made a decent career out of fighting almost nobody
@justice008a The resume's empty because those chicken rats all ducked him, I sure didn't see any of those buncha fuckin' yellow jersey's goin' after him!
@hornetsnest001 LMAO -- THE RESUME'S EMPTY -- that's the only true thing you've said. You notice I chose a lot of names who all fought each other, but EVERYBODY was ducking Semenko LOL -- ya sure. Can EVERYBODY be the problem, or was Semenko just a gutless backjumping coward??
@justice008a ..........Have to agree with justice on this. Semenko ducked people, and when he did fight he hugged/held on to guys like Behn Wilson, Dave Brown and Time Hunter (the douche even kneed hunter a serious no no in hockey fights) like he was their mother. Semenko was the most overrated goon in hockey.
@justice008a some of these guys have an "excuse"; gillies didn't really like to fight, same with beck, fotiu was friends with semenko, Berube started in the NHL at the very end of Semenko's career. But the others like Plett, Homgren, Cochrane, Nystrom, Kyte and McSorley should have been on his fight card. To his credit, Semenko did fight Kocur, Miller, Brownie and O'Reilly and did OK.
Seems quite often that when Probert is in a rematch is when he loses the jersey, I really don't see a difference between him and Ray. Once a jersey comes off is when the fight is over, lol
your jersey off with the under shirt on ( which you can grab, although difficult ) to being half-naked like Ray was?? He was the sole reason the tie down rule came into play!!
actually I think probert passed the torch to sandy maccarthy in their 1994 fight (proberts last fight as a Detroit red wing). He was no longer the champ after that.
This was kinda like the passing of the torch...Semenko was one of the best enforcers throughout his career, but obviously at the end of his career..This fight may have made it clear he was done as one of the NHL's top enforcers. This was the fight that let the rest of the NHL know theres a new sheriff in town.
I agree...but the only knock against Probert was he let opponents get his jersey off to gain an advantage. He wasn't a pussy like Rob Ray, who was barechested under the sweater, but he did have an advantage when his sweater was off. I'd still rank him as the best ever, and only a roided up Twist, BGL, and huggybear Brashear have even come close to being as dominant.
@Maxharddrive64 Yes and no.Semenko never fought some of the best of his era;Gillies,Nystrom,Fotiu,Cochrane,JonathanPlayfair. only fought Wilson and held on for dear life, same with Brown. He was way overrated imo.But Probie clearly showed him who the boss was here...
I have tremendous respect for nhl fighters for their combination of strength, balance, and incredible coordination! A truly underestimated athletic skill!
Serves that dickhead right for jumping him in their previous fight. Semenko wouldn't go on the ice when Dave Brown was there, and I'm assuming the same for Probert after he got dropped. He intimidated most players, but he was fearful of guys who could really fight.
This fight the new lion stole the pride and sent the old male into exile. Probie would've done it in Toronto but Gallant got involved b/c Semenko jumped him. And that was immediately after Probie gave a serious beatdown to Clark (ending with Wendal dry-humping Probie's leg).
The old male was already in exile 2 or 3 years prior to this glorious moment. From 1985 on, Semenko was afraid to go on the ice whenever Dave Brown, Dave Richter or Behn Wilson were on it, for fear of physical pain, humiliation and suddenly becoming unemployed. Those guys weren't paid all that well back then.
He retired just a few weeks after this fight. I read that he jumped Todd Ewen on March 8, 1988 much like he did Probert earlier that season. Then just 4 days before Toronto was to play St. Louis again (Ewen vowed to get revenge), the back-jumping Semenko retired; he claimed he retired because couldn't stand playing for John Brophy any more.

In long serie Semenko would have been troubles with guys like Probert, Langdon, McSorley, McCarthy etch, his style dont work against those guys.
Semenko didnt even win never a Probert IMO because he landed those first 4-5 unfair punches and Probie did his comeback in the end, DRAW in my book.
Hunter got his numbers, he never beated Jay Miller i know and couldnt beat Byers but those were tough guys i know.
Wilson won him easily, Brown scored also a victory over him as Semenko scared him.

IMO, the best of all time is still John Ferguson.

@rcoveyduc true he did but who didnt right!! it really came in full time because of Rob Ray hence they call it the "Rob Ray rule".
