i think will smith did a great job that year with "big willie style" and he is such a gentleman that represent the black community im not agaisnt the fact that he won but i think the notorious big deserved that one, his album "life after death" sold more than 10 million copies in the US which was the record for a rap artist. But as you can see they prefer to give the grammy to a clean (no curse) rap.
