@454sskilla jake brakes are loud because there are flaps in the engine and they switch on and just choke the engine thats how they work and the higher the engine rpms the louder and better it sounds
It's a compression release engine brake used mainly in large diesel trucks. It works by opening the exhaust valves at the top of the compression stroke, releasing the compressed air in a pop so it can't push the cylinder back down. This slows down the truck and saves wear and tear on the regular (service) brakes. It also helps keep a truck from speeding out of control when going downhill.
I used to think it worked like that too, but it doesn't. The Jake brake in diesel trucks works on a vacuum, not compression. Other engine brakes, like for gas engines, might work on compression though. I'm not sure.
@jetengine7 Congratulations! You have the correct description of how a compression release brake functions. It is very misunderstood exactly what it is doing. However manipulating valves in that caustic environment is no easy task. We would love your participation in our new Jacobs Vehicle Systems Fan page:
actually not all trucks have them a lot of rigid trucks dont. I used to drive a Kenworth T300 rigid with a ICS cummins motor in it and that was only a few years old and didnt have a jake.
Was a real shit coming down long hills with trafic lights halfway down then going red!
tengo un camion freightliner fld112 y me gustaria saber como puedo ingresar mi jake brake en you tube ... por no saber mucho ingles y tambien me encantan los jakobs

I thought it closed the valves and cut the diesel feed so the air stuck in the cylinder causes a back pressure and slows down the pistons?
I must be wrong then. :P
