like everyone else said, basically a heart attack/stoke, only in his thigh muscle. They thought he was faking/drug seeking, so the doctors didn't treat it for 3 days while his muscles died. by the time they believed something was really wrong, he was in such intense pain that he had to be put in a chem coma. While like that, Stacy, his proxy, had them take out the dead muscle (House didn't want that). the ep where he gives a lecture explains it.

To midgetgamer666 He had suffered an infarction in his thigh muscle which is the same as a myocardial infarction, it's just that it happened in his leg and doctors didn't recognize what the real problem was until the damage had been done. An infarct is like a blood clot that obstructs the flow of blood, usually to the heart as in heart attack or the brain as in stroke, and so on.

I'm fond of this song, and I think it works here well, particularly in the scene when he tries to walk at home without the cane. Escalating drama ahoy. That at the taking pills at the beats, (near 4.30ish). The white fading section of all the characters was interesting - especially as you cut it with the drama of House on the hospital bed.
