  • I just want to say thank you for continuing with gimp tutorials, I've seen people switch to photoshop and they lost 3/4 of their subscribers because a lot of us have gimp because we can't afford photoshop

  • whats better for drawings? gimp or photoshop :S ?

  • you just earn a subscriber today... nice job

  • I did this tutorial and it came out great! I love this guy's teaching skills!

  • ahh somebody help! I did everything up to the matte paint fine, and I spent forever painting it all in, but then I couldn't get it to lay over the black sketch. Pressing the visible button didn't work because it was already visible...does anybody know how I can save this? I spent forever doing it and it just looks like somebody painted over the picture poorly.

  • Love this tutorial.

  • this tutorial is amazing for newbies like me. Clearly explained and clearly shown how to do it. I experimented with the backgroundlayer a bit and the result is awesome!

    TnQ!

  • thanks this was a lot of fun!

  • Dude, you saved my ass with this tutorial!

  • Thanks :)

  • LMAO at all the people that dont understand that those stuff have nothing to do with gimp XD

  • Great video

    Cool effect

  • The merging wont work on my Mac :(

  • Thanks buddy :)

  • Great video, very helpful! Thank you for posting-

    Jason

  • Hi. Thanks for your help.

    I'm using 2.6.8

Are you telling us that we could colour past the lines, but not on top of the lines? Several of us seem to be colouring on both sides of the line.

  • Way Cool Way to make a Cartoonish looking Pop Art style.

  • Help! I can't paint on my matte color layer...I don't know why...I followed the directionsto a T. Thanks!

  • I really like your Gimp-tutorials!!! They are clear and you describe the tasks so well that - even if I'm from Germany - I have no problem to follow the things you are doing. Very good job!!!

  • im realy got problem with this.. camstudio.. i dont know how to capture a video .. lyk you do.. i fail

  • @MrCactuz13 Don't know if you have figured it out yet... but you don't need camstudio unless you want to record what you're doing on the computer. But you don't use it to edit photos.

  • what i mean mate is how did you insert your camstudio in your gimp?? can you show us??

  • @MrCactuz13 Camstudio has nothing to do with Gimp. It is a completely unrelated piece of software. Gimp is for editing images and camstudio is for recording what happens on screen. If i wasn't making YouTube tutorials I would never have used Camstudio. You only need it if you want to make screen capture videos. But I repeat: You can't insert camstudio into Gimp - they are separate software tools for seperate jobs.

  • sorry man.. i just dont get it.. i dont know anything about camstudio.. im doing fine with gimp edit.. i just stuck with camstudio!!! i download cam studio and did not work for me.. dont know why

  • @MrCactuz13 in the youtube search bar type "JimmyR camstudio" to find a good tutorial for camstudio

  • Camstudio is just the program used to record the video. Gimp is the program you use to make the picture. This video already shows you how to do that.

  • dude.. can you make a tutorial on how did you make those picture on camstudio??? please..?? thanks

  • yes i am new in internet.. and i was following your Pop Art.. and i suddenly shock where did you get that camstudio and what the heck where did you get that painted man XD

  • where did you get that camstudio thing!??

  • how do you get the yellow circle around your mouse? because i'm stuck at 4:50

  • @Kevsercarrousel The yellow circle has nothing to do with Gimp. It's part of the recording software I used to help you follow the mouse.

  • @malgalin By far best tutorial I've seen about gimp...THANK YOU!

  • hey..is it possible t ovector without using a graphic pen?

  • @jongerdz I don't use a pen or graphic tablet. Not even a mouse - just a laptop pad.

  • Love "labor intensive" work, its gives me a challenge and gives me something that is manually challenging. It gives me a better feeling of achievement when the works completed :D

  • You don't have to save it, you just have to press ctrl z just to undo an action

  • No, you should save it as a .png coz it got better quality...

  • Thanks so much this was great. I look on other Gimp tutorials and i can't follow them, thanks again.

  • nice done xD

  • Gracias, tenía tiempo buscando cómo lograr este efecto.

  • @siwatl De nada

  • dont smoke dude.. its not good for you :]

  • @MrXeeslev I don't.

  • Thanks man! I actually followed you with my own picture. It worked! :D

  • I'm going to try this next. ^>^

  • thanX for the tutorial!

  • That was a good tutorial thanks

  • Thanks!!!

  • wow! that looks amazing!

  • thnx! great tutorial! =D

  • Excellent! I got a lot out of it. Thanks

  • Awesome! Thanks for the walk-through. It works great. I feel like a little kid colouring, though... hard to stay in the lines! Even with a tablet, it is a challenge.

  • y do u feel that way...a editing software is an editing software...plus if he can do all this with gimp dont you think he can do way more with others such as photoshop and fireworks...jux sayin

  • i don't know how to get the little down tool, I guees it's "CamStudio" to get the effect in hands and face, help please.

  • Thank you for your help.

  • i don't know how to get the side bar for the layers onto my screen. Please help!

  • Ctrl L

  • You've just helped me for one of my pieces for collage; thanks man.

  • thanks for the help you did a great job making the tutorail

  • Please answer this ( this is the most stupid question evar but its real ) I just made a image on gimp but i dunno how to turn it into a normal image, i mean i cant save it as normal image i dunno how to, I cant find the option in there PLEASE HELP lol im so stupid

  • when you save it, put a " .jpg " at the end of the pic. This saves it a s a JPEG.

  • ty for help

  • @D1060C first you need to merge any layers down. then right click on the background layer and flatten image. then you can go into file and save

  • ty for help

  • Np, If you need any more help, feel free to e-mail me.

  • thank you so much

  • Nice video, very useful.

    I don't like monkeys.

    "Mon-keys!" - Brad Pitt says.

    .

    Rated, commented.

    Go on.

  • thanks m8 ..

    easy than making vector

  • i'm really annoyed, this takes soooo long and comes out really well. and then a friend who has a ridiculously expensive editing program does something almost as good in 10 seconds. :-(

  • I'll take something that costs nothing more than time and effort over some automated push button solution any day! Don't be disheartened - any monkey can push a button, but it takes a clever monkey to know what's under the button...

  • @malgalin i think i love you.

  • @malgalin holy crap thts awesome ive beeusing gimp for a while now and thts the coolest thing anyone has every said about it =]

  • Thanks. I made a great picture of myself using this, worked fine :)

  • Thanks so much for that, was really useful :)

  • how did you get to the point where you get the layer to become lighter by changing the mode becuse I did it and nothing happened.

  • great video. I subscribed to you, maybe you can check my vids. just getting started. love gimp. cheers

  • How do i open that Layers thing where he puts 3 backrounds

  • This has been the most helpful tutorial yet!

  • thankx loads! I've been using the GIMP for a bit now, ur vids are helping me learn it sooo much faster... TYVM!!!

    tooodles!

  • i found that if you stay in the matte colour layer, than repaste the ORIGINAL image into it, you don't even have to color!

  • help, I accidentally closed out of the layer tab thing *you have the one with the tools and the layers one with i think gradiant settings and opacity, etc etc* and cant get it back,....

  • Press Ctrl + L

  • how did you get your curser like that?

  • Great Tutorial! Helped Alot :)

  • Wait, I dont understand 1 thing. Where can I see the Cam Studio? My very first time to use Gimp so I dont know where can i see the Cam Studio. HELP ME PLEASE? :((

  • Cam Studio is his recording program... It has nothing to do with gimp don't worry.

  • That looks pretty fucking dynamite. Gonna have to try it out. Cheers dude

  • what are the things you can do in photoshop you cannot do in gimp?is here any?

  • Ughhhh the colour does go through the black lines for me

  • good vid.

you can do this in just ONE CLICK in photoshop or paintshop

  • but how much does photoshop cost, and how much does gimp?

  • Gimps actually free.

but photoshop is pretty expensive.. not sure what price.

  • 90 euros..

  • Photoshop Elements is more likely 90 Euros. Not the same app. Photoshop starts at $700US for the standard version, $1000 for the extended version.

  • He was pointing out that GIMP is free and that Photoshop isn't.

  • Gimp Is Free...

  • I LOVE YOU! thank you so much for this tutorial, worked so well. godbless!

  • You're an amazing life saver. I'm a first time GIMP user and I was able to do everything according to your instructions.

    Thanks a lot!

  • Fantastic!

  • When I do the Matte Colour step, the colours don't stay within the lines. I've followed your instructions exactly but, it's still not working. :(

  • yeea i had the same problem. did you change any settings in the color brush menu MALGALIN?? PLEASE HELP

  • I think he just means the colours won't go over the black. They'll still appear on the other side of the lines, just not on top of them.

  • For some reason after I set the layer to multiply and go to paint it the paint goes everywhere including over the black

  • very nice

  • Thank you so much for this clear and useful tutorial !

  • you have the best Gimp tutorials! thanks alot!

  • i havent downloaded gimp yet but i will soon when i get my dads permisson and this gave me a good bit of information thanks :)

  • hummmmmm what version u using?

  • nothing happens when i click dodge

  • i jussst downloaded gimp like, twenty mintutes ago, no joke, and this helped me alottt (:

i didnt even know anything about it.

someone recomended it to me because i love editing pictures, but i only have photofiltre (and now gimp)

    so thanks! (: (:

  • very goood tutorial, thank you

  • wat tool r u using

  • Great tutorial!

  • how do you get the layers thing down the side. :( someone heeeeeeeeelp

  • If you mean the layers menu... window... thing-- click File on the GIMP window and there is a menu called Dialogues I think. Then you can select Layers from there.

  • File>Dialogs>Layers

  • Ctrl + L will also bring out the layers box.

  • rather than skipping ahead it would have been better to timelapse the painting

  • how did you get the background all one color without ruining the paint you used to color the guy with the guitar?

  • how do you get that yellow circle you were useing as a cursor ?

PS. Im doin "pop art" for my gcse art, and you have just totally got me an A* :)

  • you need to download camstudio to film things and on one of the settings thing you can add it on your cursor :)

  • How to download the dutch version of GIMP 2?

  • i gave you a 5 rating! i did one as i listened to your instructions i love the turn out.

  • man, you were right, it takes a long time. Great payoff though, it really looks good in the end.

  • nicely done tutorial, as per usual. i tried it out and it works great!!

    thanks, m8!

  • Awesome video!

  • can you make a tut on making soething black and white or if its simnple enough just tell me in a comment, thanks!

  • right click image -> Colours -> Desaturate...

    Booyah!

  • thanks, but can you make it only one color, my old camera could but i got a new better one.

  • Just black and white...no grey? Do I understand you correctly?

Follow the steps up until the matte colour part, and then just block out the areas you want to be black instead of colouring in.

There might be a plug-in that does this, but I've not tried so I don't know.

  • with my old camera i could aim it at something...and i can pick a color from it make only 1 color like red and make the rest black and white but can it be done in gimp without using the pop art, beacuse pop art isnt as much realistic, sorry if im confusing you.

  • I still don't really get what you mean.

You could try using colorize in the colour menu. Set the hue to 360 and the saturation to 100 (for example) and you get an interesting Red and Black image, which sounds like the sort of thing you might be after?

    Is it? :)

Could you send me a link to a picture that shows the effect you are after? It might help.

  • ok how did you get the layers window at the side?

  • is gimp free?

  • yes it is

  • Yes it is google gimp it should be the first result.

  • hey there! evry time i try and do this, the image turns black and the sky turns white instead of stencil look, no matter what i do... do you know why?

  • At what point does the image turn black and the sky white? What are you trying to do at that point?

  • wene i select dodge to make it look like the scetch

  • oh wait...ive got it now good tutorial

  • Cool, thanks.

  • Malgalin, great tutorial. I have a doubt. When you are in the Matte layer, and choose the paint brush, which is the setup for the brush in terms of opacity, pressure, etc There are a bunch of options there. My problem is : I cannot obtain the same color for the surface, If I pass more than once the brush in the same area, the tonality changes and stay differente from the other area in the same surface (for instance the face!) Thanks in advance

  • Hmmm, tricky. I keep the brush settings and opacity on their default settings...I don;t touch them. I have the Matte Colour layer set to 'overlay', but for that part of the process that is the only thing I change. I've never encountered the problem you mention.

Are you definitely setting the layer mode to 'overlay'? Other settings may lead to your problem, but I'm not sure. Or it could be a problem using an older version of Gimp? Click 'Help' and then 'About' to check which version you have.

  • If you can't figure it out and still want help it might be easier to help if you recorded yourself with camstudio trying to do it, I might be able to see the problem...

Camstudio is available free. It's the same software I use to make the tutorials(just google it) then post a video of you talking through the issue as it happens.

  • Malgalin, OK. Thanks. I will try observing the set to overlay. All the steps are clear but the painting of the Matte colour layer. Opacity 100%? Right ? Thanks again and please do more tutorials. They are clear and superb !
