as a long time TOWER of POWER fan - this is an interesting version... faster/Ronnie Beck (not David) on drums... LOVE Lenny Picket on lead sax... but honestly WHAT A BAND - tight today as ever!!!!
You know, I'm 16 years old and I really like the Tower of Power.
Though, with all the comments on the video, I feel kinda obligued to say it's phony, boring, unoriginal and overall bad music. Since it's just as good as lots of modern music, and that seem so be an accurate description of modern music.
Come on people, don't be so racist. There is LOADS of great music nowadays.
@HadriantheXI You are just 16...You have no Idea what paying due´s is all about...there is nothing today that even stands in the same room with this...and by the way learn how to spell Obliged...beforre you make a comment...and listen to some real music before you open your mouth...
@pj934 That's because you spend all your time listening to old music. You only scratch the surface of modern music and I must admit there's a thick layer of shit at the surface of music nowadays. But please, at least try to look through it.
Music is timeless. That is all.
Also, please learn how to spell 'before' and how to use interpunction and capital letters before you open your mouth again.
When Tony Bennett did those duets with the younger artists he talked about having to teach them to sing and harmonize with a real live person standing there rather than with the headphones on and doing it that way. They are just used to going the way of the Studio, teaching them how to do this and that for recording. Today's big acts don't have to spend a lot of time working clubs and such. Poor kids, Poor US!
Forty two years of TOP Since the bogus rock hall inducts bland acts and never had a clue about "what is hip" then all of us should respect the best and "dis" a rock hall like this. Since no TOP then no accreditation. Those jackasses actually inducted Iggy Pop, The Cure, U2, Abba....Idiots. No TOP, AWB, Jimmy Smith, Doobies, Little Feat, Los Lobos,Level 42,Steve Miller,Moody Blues, Johhny & Edgar Winter, Spirit,The Fixx, William Clarke, J Giels &Magic Dick, Tommy Castro. U agree?
@knausspiano There was some awesome musicianship in the 80s - Dire Straits straddled the turn of that decade, for instance, or the Police - but not really in the funk.
Francis Rocco Prestia - the engine in the groove, baby. Too bad he was sorta buried in the mix on this one. I've never been a huge fan of Conti's playing, but he wasn't shabby here.
I hate to sound like an old man, but you just don't see creativity like this anymore in the current music scene. I'm talking about raw talent combining jazz, funk, and catchy hooks without that overproduced phony and regurgitated drivel that you hear on the airwaves these days. Steely Dan, Tower of Power, etc......great stuff!
@tinian33 Sir, you just need ot look closer. All these things exist, but they are not in the popular eyes. There are scores of young, talented bands that play true to the roots of the music. I would recommend a trip to New Orleans Jazz Festival for what may indeed be the best hip trip of your life. Enjoy!
@tinian33 Oh, it's still out there. I understand your frustration, though. Creativity and musicianship like this is alive and plentiful today, but not doing so well. Bands like this today don't sell nearly as many records as they used to. Blame the listening audience, not the talent pool.
@tinian33 I agree but, now you have to pay so many people and you're not getting much money at these engagements nowadays so people use samplers, keyboards, drum machines to try and get the job done and all the pay goes to one or two people, and then you have to think about the economy.
They didn't show Rocco once!!!! Blasphemy... on a more positive note HOLY SHIT they are the tightest group ever. My god that was the best live performance of that tune I've seen...
@trecoolmania That's the classic horn section (Kupka, Gillette, Adams, Castillo, Pickett), and Bruce Conte on guitar, Chester Thompson on organ,...They changed lead singers like most people change socks, and David's not on drums, but other than that, it's THE CLASSIC lineup!...What are you talking about?
im 13 and my band teacher recommended this band to listen for the Bari, and im glad he did, i now realize my low horn is a force to be reckoned with, not just a filler
In spite of dominating, mindless DJ's, pointless sampling, embarrassing remixes, etc., I sure do hope that true, live, heartfelt music, played at the spot, like this, will survive.
A bunch of well seasoned musicians not only doing a hell of a job, but enjoying music as it should be enjoyed. Not only that, but there's no division of race in this music or this band. I think I found a new favorite.
@nanooman Y'know you have a very good point my man. As much as race was thought of as a divider back then (I was 17) we havent progressed very far since then. In fact in many way, many might say we are even MORE racially divided TODAY than back then. Sad.
This tempo is psychotic. Trust me, I should know. I'm in my High School's Jazz Band, and our director believes in playing it at original tempo. We listened to this version 17 times to get the tempo down. I play Trombone, which takes the place of the guitar. It's fun, I can tell you.
When your the singer and the band starts the song this friggin fast you know youre in for a hellish ride. "Heres your tempo singer, lets see if you can fit all them words in"!! Man, musicians dont get so excited on stage that you speed the tempo this much. Yeah this is one of the baddest bands in history and their pullin it off, but its way to damn fast.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! Take me back, take me back, PLEASE take me back to when music was played by musicians, and men's pants FIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As far as I'm concerned, the rhythm section is and always will be the very best seat in the house. Tower of Power is all about tight rhythm grooves and kick ass timing. That's what is hip! Peace.
Man Chicago 1977, the brisk weather was IN season, the instruments were IN tune, and the coke was OUT of this world.
Check that trumpet line from 1:21 -1:27 maaaaaaan ohhhhh MAAAAAANNNNN that's way out.
This is about 20 BPM faster than the studio version which is tough to lay down given the technical proficiency of the tune, I have no other explanation for how it was done save the guess that it was snowing in the dressing room!

My guess is the Channel 11 studios ( St. Lous near Pulaski )based on the set??? I have seen many free concerts back then including BS & T, Santana + Gato
I don't worry about what other people think is hip... From the day I saw this group ''LIVE IN HAWAII' at 'The Last Crater Festival' there, from that day on I knew.for certain, that everyone has Soul. The love for music of all kinds come in many colors... This group was the best. Bruce Hawes, Composer
@Taaron313 I made her brush her teeth before giving me head,,, She thought that was funny... She said it ain't like I'm gonna eat your dick... I have to give her props she sucked it like a champ, made a meal out of it....
