  • LMFAO wishes they could play like these guys

  • this is hip.

  • This is definitely missing something without Lenny White's lead vocals.

  • Right Onnnnn !!! I always Loved Soundstage. That, and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, Fridays, On Stage!, Midnight Special, In Concert, etc... We had it pretty damn good for 'oppressive times' for the "Hippie" !!! hahaha !!

Thanx so much for this upload and all the time and effort you've put into your channel. I appreciate it !

Keep it Up and Keep Funking It Up !! ~~~~ and.........

    Keep The Peace Up !

  • Chesterrrrrrrrr!!!!!

  • ROCCO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • as a long time TOWER of POWER fan - this is an interesting version... faster/Ronnie Beck (not David) on drums... LOVE Lenny Picket on lead sax... but honestly WHAT A BAND - tight today as ever!!!!

  • Who are the squares in the audience?

  • You know, I'm 16 years old and I really like the Tower of Power.

Though, with all the comments on the video, I feel kinda obligued to say it's phony, boring, unoriginal and overall bad music. Since it's just as good as lots of modern music, and that seem so be an accurate description of modern music.

Come on people, don't be so racist. There is LOADS of great music nowadays.

  • @HadriantheXI You are just 16...You have no Idea what paying due´s is all about...there is nothing today that even stands in the same room with this...and by the way learn how to spell Obliged...beforre you make a comment...and listen to some real music before you open your mouth...

  • @pj934 That's because you spend all your time listening to old music. You only scratch the surface of modern music and I must admit there's a thick layer of shit at the surface of music nowadays. But please, at least try to look through it.

Music is timeless. That is all.

Also, please learn how to spell 'before' and how to use interpunction and capital letters before you open your mouth again.

  • @pj934 you can't spell 'before', so shut up...

  • Tower en version speed ! On sent que les années 80 arrivent, mais il reste de magnifiques moments de pur groove. Et quelle énergie !

  • you know what ISN'T hip? a lot of modern, mainstream music. Some people have broken the mold, but it's few, too few

  • hi

  • white people CAN funk! damn!

  • When Tony Bennett did those duets with the younger artists he talked about having to teach them to sing and harmonize with a real live person standing there rather than with the headphones on and doing it that way. They are just used to going the way of the Studio, teaching them how to do this and that for recording. Today's big acts don't have to spend a lot of time working clubs and such. Poor kids, Poor US!

  • Forty two years of TOP Since the bogus rock hall inducts bland acts and never had a clue about "what is hip" then all of us should respect the best and "dis" a rock hall like this. Since no TOP then no accreditation. Those jackasses actually inducted Iggy Pop, The Cure, U2, Abba....Idiots. No TOP, AWB, Jimmy Smith, Doobies, Little Feat, Los Lobos,Level 42,Steve Miller,Moody Blues, Johhny & Edgar Winter, Spirit,The Fixx, William Clarke, J Giels &Magic Dick, Tommy Castro. U agree?

  • Cool bands still exist, but they don't have any popularity and stay unknown. But you can find some...

  • david garibaldi?

  • @PAMAROSHOUSE

    No not Garibaldi here

  • the very definition of "tight"

  • @tinian33....You said it. I tell my kids the more dancers on stage the less talent the artist seems to have. This is great stuff!

  • @tinian33....You said it. I tell my kids the more dancers on stage the less talent the artist has.

  • Is that Terry Crews singing?

  • @IanTheDinosaur The lead vocalist is Edward McGhee. Terry Crews was nine in 1977, and he bears no resemblance to McGhee.

  • Man they really power this one, don't they...

  • that live version is amazingly fast XD

  • rocco prestia hair stile here was truly bad ass XD

  • what a smokin tempo...love it1

  • Hell yeah, funky R&B at it's very finest!

  • Great memories of my old man growing up to this music... :) xxx

  • They are better today than ever

  • Sooo tight, so beautifully balanced. What happened to musicianship of this quality?

Ah, I know - the 80s came along.

  • @knausspiano There was some awesome musicianship in the 80s - Dire Straits straddled the turn of that decade, for instance, or the Police - but not really in the funk.

  • Francis Rocco Prestia - the engine in the groove, baby. Too bad he was sorta buried in the mix on this one. I've never been a huge fan of Conti's playing, but he wasn't shabby here.

  • Highest funk to white ratio

  • FRP's beard is EPIC

  • Who is the guitar?

  • @sgpnc

The guitarist is Bruce Conti playing a 1957 Gibson Les Paul.

  • @MrGuitarHack Thanks.

  • oh man amazing

  • wow

  • I hate to sound like an old man, but you just don't see creativity like this anymore in the current music scene. I'm talking about raw talent combining jazz, funk, and catchy hooks without that overproduced phony and regurgitated drivel that you hear on the airwaves these days. Steely Dan, Tower of Power, etc......great stuff!

  • @tinian33 You're preachin to the chior man! Couldn't have said it better...

  • @tinian33 I may not sound like a young man but I AGREE

    !

  • @tinian33 Sir, you just need ot look closer. All these things exist, but they are not in the popular eyes. There are scores of young, talented bands that play true to the roots of the music. I would recommend a trip to New Orleans Jazz Festival for what may indeed be the best hip trip of your life. Enjoy!

  • @tinian33 Oh, it's still out there. I understand your frustration, though. Creativity and musicianship like this is alive and plentiful today, but not doing so well. Bands like this today don't sell nearly as many records as they used to. Blame the listening audience, not the talent pool.

  • @tinian33 i hate to sound like a little kid, but i'm 15 and lee morgan is my idol. aside from the drinking and cheating and all.

  • @tinian33 I agree but, now you have to pay so many people and you're not getting much money at these engagements nowadays so people use samplers, keyboards, drum machines to try and get the job done and all the pay goes to one or two people, and then you have to think about the economy.

  • @tinian33 There is plenty of great creativity in the current music scene today; it's just not being played on the airwaves!

  • i invented the dance @ 3:35

  • @uke2themax so u already had some experiments with lsd? :D :P

  • cocaine's a helluva drug :P

  • Funkalicious

  • Hahaha - I will hear TOP in July ... :) :) :)

  • this is music

  • this is not bad its bad ass

  • I'm diggin' that black suit with the music notes on it that Lenny is wearing. Sweet!

  • yeah...this is it

  • They didn't show Rocco once!!!! Blasphemy... on a more positive note HOLY SHIT they are the tightest group ever. My god that was the best live performance of that tune I've seen...

  • who the fuck is this band?...some weird little whiny sounding black guy and a black drummer.....thats not tower....

  • @trecoolmania That's the classic horn section (Kupka, Gillette, Adams, Castillo, Pickett), and Bruce Conte on guitar, Chester Thompson on organ,...They changed lead singers like most people change socks, and David's not on drums, but other than that, it's THE CLASSIC lineup!...What are you talking about?

  • @actormanic ...And excuse me for not mentioning that Rocco is on bass here....Sorry, trecoolmania, but this is the real deal.

  • @trecoolmania mdk..

  • @trecoolmania who the fuck is this whiny little prick talking shit like he know, but who doesn't know anything about ToP ?????? who is that twat????

  • im 13 and my band teacher recommended this band to listen for the Bari, and im glad he did, i now realize my low horn is a force to be reckoned with, not just a filler

  • WHAT is that dance called!

  • tasty guitar licks

  • wtf... is that Terry Crews on vocals?

  • What is hip? That giant backdrop promoting Aint Nothin Stoppin us Now.

  • The funk is overwhelming. Damn those horns were SMOKIN :)

  • theres like 30 people in the audience

  • That man is ripped! O_O

  • This recording is -FAST- for this tune -- almost 120 -- and yet, it's still tight and crisp as the slower recorded versions. These guys could PLAY.

  • @trptmbalmer And they still sound great today! If you get a chance to see them live you will not be disappointed. The best.

  • If people dislike this... what the f..k are they doin watchin it?? just to use the dislike button?

  • Comment removed

  • man, those poor fingers.. Roccos must be the fastest at his syle.. this is way faster than the original!

  • Even faster than the album......Rocco!!!!

  • this is hip

  • If you aint bouncing while listening to this, you're dead...

  • 6 people are not hip, neither is the dislike button ;)

  • So is there where prince got the footsy dance from?

  • Friggin' AWESOME!!!!

  • In spite of dominating, mindless DJ's, pointless sampling, embarrassing remixes, etc., I sure do hope that true, live, heartfelt music, played at the spot, like this, will survive.

  • Who could dislike this?

    - crazy funky clothes

    - afros

    - funky moves

    - best musicians

    - best funk band

    SUPERGROOVALICIOUSFUNKYTOWN!!

  • TIGHT!!!!

  • A bunch of well seasoned musicians not only doing a hell of a job, but enjoying music as it should be enjoyed. Not only that, but there's no division of race in this music or this band. I think I found a new favorite.

  • @nanooman Y'know you have a very good point my man. As much as race was thought of as a divider back then (I was 17) we havent progressed very far since then. In fact in many way, many might say we are even MORE racially divided TODAY than back then. Sad.

  • This tempo is psychotic. Trust me, I should know. I'm in my High School's Jazz Band, and our director believes in playing it at original tempo. We listened to this version 17 times to get the tempo down. I play Trombone, which takes the place of the guitar. It's fun, I can tell you.

  • @Bangurdead25 we did the same

    i feel your pain, brotha

    :D

    and im on bone too

  • This is funky twice.

  • When your the singer and the band starts the song this friggin fast you know youre in for a hellish ride. "Heres your tempo singer, lets see if you can fit all them words in"!! Man, musicians dont get so excited on stage that you speed the tempo this much. Yeah this is one of the baddest bands in history and their pullin it off, but its way to damn fast.

  • @specitender 1977 = cocaine

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! Take me back, take me back, PLEASE take me back to when music was played by musicians, and men's pants FIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • As far as I'm concerned, the rhythm section is and always will be the very best seat in the house. Tower of Power is all about tight rhythm grooves and kick ass timing. That's what is hip! Peace.

  • As far as I'm concerned, the rhythm section is and always will be the very best seat in the house. That's what is hip! Peace.

  • the tempo is out of this world...they all snorted a line before this gig lol

  • faster!!

  • Man Chicago 1977, the brisk weather was IN season, the instruments were IN tune, and the coke was OUT of this world.

Check that trumpet line from 1:21 -1:27 maaaaaaan ohhhhh MAAAAAANNNNN that's way out.

This is about 20 BPM faster than the studio version which is tough to lay down given the technical proficiency of the tune, I have no other explanation for how it was done save the guess that it was snowing in the dressing room!

Do ya know the difference between Michael Jackson & Richard Pryor??

  • MJ got burned by Pepsi & RP got burned by Coke!!!

  • Bruce Conte on guitar folks! As funky as it gets....

  • I swear to god that's Chris Tucker singing LOL

Seriously though, is this the guy after Hubert Tubbs?

  • why isnt garibaldi on drums?

  • Hipness is - wearing a cape whilst playing trumpet! :-D

  • 6 people don't have a fucking clue of what is hip.

  • bleh

  • hahahhahahaahah die trumpete geht ab bei 1:20

  • Oh yesss!

  • How in bloody hell can this be faster than the studio version?!?! Wow.

  • WoW Fast and Bulbous.

  • WoW

  • wtf thats fast:D Great guys!!!

  • Will always dig the Band! This lead singer sucks!

  • @therealchopmaster You have no taste,no knowledge and therefore no chops.I re-name you the Realprickmeister........

  • The lead singer sucks!

  • The baddest band of all time. Saw them several times between '73 and '75 and never got enough. THIS is music and I thank you for sharing it!

  • 5 people dont know what is hip

  • T.O.P. in their prime! They are still good now, though.

  • this is so good it makes me cry ... over all the gorgeous musicianship that is lost forever ... music today sucks. we are a society of button pushers. nobody actually wants to create anything anymore. life is all about an iphone app. welcome to hell.

  • @losangelesbassist couldn't agree more. these guys made the music all by themselves.

  • I saw them at about this time. They had opened for War. I think I was 16 yrs old. They were off the hook! Both bands were. I'd never change growing up during the time I did.

  • @mybadtexas me neither!! Great music, during the era when cats were truly "cool." well said.

  • Lenny Pickett has 'ants in his pants'!!! Great stuff!!!

  • If anybody has this song performed at Sacremento from the "Live and in Living Color" album please upload :)

  • FANTASTIC!!!!!!!! SURE GOT ME GOING!!!

  • This is beyond "tight" - it's a f#ckin' coke trip - the best kind, too :D

Real professionals, doing what they do best. We need more true music like this.

  • Sooooo freakin tight!

  • classic

  • LOL at Rocco Prestia with long heair and a beard, but the dude is still one of the baddest cats on the planet!!

  • Bruce Conte is killin' that solo!!!

  • 4 people where overwhelmed by ToP's funky soul energy and started having epileptic fits. In doing so, their mouse hand inadvertently hit the dislike button. We forgive those people because...we are hip.

  • 4 people have no soul !

  • not enough beards in the band!! :P

  • Hey Fatstrat1079, thanks. I was 17 then and would have jumped at those opportunities but I don't recall them. You, my friend, were truly hip.

  • When did Chris Tucker join Tower Of Power? He really sounds like Chris Tucker on the second half of performance. Check out homeboy with the fro top-rockin' (or West Coast call up-rockin') @ 3:35. TOP is in same vein with EWF, AWB, Chicago, Santana & P-Funk as some of the best bands ever.

  • That's not Lenny. He was gone by then and went solo. That's Ernest Tubbs.

  • @tallpaul559 Actually, that's Edward McGee, after HUBERT Tubbs (not Ernest).

  • this is the greatest performance i've ever seen. excellent musicians and a great show, too, especially the dancing from 03:35 to 03:42 those moves are definately HIP

  • How does music like this ever be equaled much less ever excelled??

  • Oh god yeah, thank you for uploading a video of 70's Tower of Power in such fantastic quality! It's hard to find, and this is my favorite song by them.

  • Amazing and so funky. This is *very* hip! :^D

Gotta luv that Ludwig clear Vistalite drumset. :3

  • I wish I had grew up in this era. I heard this song yesterday in class and I love it!

  • where in Chicago was this?

  • @rensensekid

My guess is the Channel 11 studios ( St. Lous near Pulaski )based on the set??? I have seen many free concerts back then including BS & T, Santana + Gato

  • I can't make out the drummer's name??? That dude has one killer foot 2:50.

  • @XDrummerSteve Ronny Beck

  • hows that for mic cord handling at 1:12

  • Man this tempo would be a blast to play on drums.

  • Is that Lenny Williams singing the Lead Vocals or am I wrong?

  • @nofx989 Not Lenny, Edward McGee on vocals.

  • I don't worry about what other people think is hip... From the day I saw this group ''LIVE IN HAWAII' at 'The Last Crater Festival' there, from that day on I knew.for certain, that everyone has Soul. The love for music of all kinds come in many colors... This group was the best. Bruce Hawes, Composer

  • Bruce Conte is forever a 'killer guitarist'

  • <3333333 Lenny Pickett

  • AMAZING

  • CHESTER!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i want drugs!!!

  • Get It Ronnie....

  • LOL @DSCOBLUE!!!!

Awesome - wish I could have seen them live. My dad and uncles used to tell me how cool it was to se them

  • Comment removed

  • who da fug was dat singing lead??? Dude looks like a crackhead who told them Yo, I know all your songs and I work cheap...Two rocks a set....

  • @DSCOBLUE Corny jokes are not hip.

  • @Taaron313 I made your Momma laugh...

  • @DSCOBLUE So what's the big deal? Most people probably laugh when they look at you.

  • @Taaron313 I made her brush her teeth before giving me head,,, She thought that was funny... She said it ain't like I'm gonna eat your dick... I have to give her props she sucked it like a champ, made a meal out of it....

  • @DSCOBLUE Guys who need to talk about it, don't get it.

  • @DSCOBLUE Wherever you go and whatever you do for the rest of your life, you will never be able to hide from the world the fact that your mind is filthy, your soul evil and everyone knows it. Enjoy your self you grubby nasty little shit.

  • @2:12 rocco is over the moon - knocked my ear off!

  • garibaldi's version is alot better, and when did chris tucker sing for TOP? haha

  • david garibadi's version is way better than this... this one is fast tempo
