  • The Killers made this song sound like a night out at the gay bar.

  • Es la peor basura que escuche

  • could've been it's own song if he just switched up the lyrics. ha

  • shit version.

  • Comment removed

  • So glad they used the real Joy Division in the Movie ..Control.

I cant think of any one better then Ian. Sorry people.

  • I'm a fan of Ian Curtis and Joy Division.

Can you name anyone else who could have done better than The Killers in covering the song. I say none.

  • @DazzleBezzleBabe babyshambles

  • @DazzleBezzleBabe Carpathian

  • @neuroticblue die

  • I like both..... now, is that so hard?

  • at least their making it a cover, and not just an exact copy of joy division

  • i prefer the original

  • This cover is a good spin on it, a tribute. While not remaining completely loyal to the original sound, it's an excellent rendition.

If we wanted to hear something exactly like Joy Division, we would listen to Joy Division.

  • @Rakaizombie spoken precisely!!!

  • @Rakaizombie smart lad.

  • That's one of my favorite mvs now. Makes me really wanna see the movie :)

  • I don't have much use for The Killers, but as someone who has been a Joy division fan for 30 years I must say I like this affectionate, respectful cover. A tip of the hat to The Killers for paying tribute to a great song and a truly great band.

  • Like this version, but was blown away by the winedarksea version.

  • Never been a big fan of the killers, but i thought this version was quite interesting as they made it their own and didnt just copy the song. Like the video alot.

  • isnt this the vid from pixies? LUV THE SONG!!

  • This song gets in me and dances around with my soul.

  • ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I♥ THIS SONG!!!! ☺☺☺☺

  • I'm sorry, but it's just not the same without Ian's voice.

  • @xXxMoondustedxXx Agreed 100%.... also the killer guitar riff that made the centerpiece of the song for me is totally gone :( Not to sound like I'm hating on The Killers, but I like the original much better...

  • @xXxMoondustedxXx that guy can't sing

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this song.

  • Definitivamente serA un KillerDay!!!

  • awesome

  • I do not like this version

  • @harlock20 Then why did you watch it and post you don't like it?

  • @Minoeman I had not seen their version nor heard it, then I watched this and did not like it, so I commented

  • @harlock20 You should know that the remaining members of Joy Division asked them to do this. :)

  • @Minoeman that's great for New Order, does not mean I have to like it

  • I don't like this version

  • Yea.. I knew there was something about The Killers I liked...

  • WRITE YOUR OWN SONGS, YOU PRETENTIOUS CUNTS!!!

  • @desconocidos27 - Well they Kinda do.. Just cause they covered a song doesn't neccesarily mean they can't right there own.. So you know.. Don't shit yourself.

  • @Jaysonaaa i wont shit myself but i will shit on this song and you

  • @desconocidos27 - Oooh, please no.. please don't shit on me! Dick.

  • @Jaysonaaa oh you deserve it! pussy

  • @desconocidos27 - LOL, grow up.

  • @desconocidos27 'Cause I'm Mr BRIGHTSIDEEEEEEEEE! ;)

  • diese kommerz band ist es nicht würdig einen song von joy division zu covern... der sänger hört sich an wie ein schlumpf und diese komplett elektronische hintergrund musik passt absolut nicht zu so einen emotionalen text!! 0/5... R.I.P Ian Curtis

  • sounds better with the vuvuzelas on.

  • he really does look like the guy from joy division. really does

  • Może być ale bez szału, nawet nie ma co porównywać do oryginału.

  • Dreadful vocals.

  • copyists....

  • This is actually sounds closer to '16 Days by dreadful JD copysists Modern English than the original song. This is trying so hard to be hip, knocking it out expensive studio crap. Worse than a tracing paper U2. At the cinema at the end of 'Control' this was the cue for everyone to go home damn quick.

  • A cover of a song should'nt be classed as better or worse, if it acts as a tribute.

Some covers are horrendously worse, but this is The Killers way of paying respects to the band that inspired them - it was never intended to be better or worse.

Sure, you'll have your opinion but essentially, this is their tribute to a song which means alot to them.

And certainly did not 'kill' the original.

  • Don't get me wrong, I like the killers, but this song is just a tad too much. I feel like im looking at the Mona Lisa painted over with a smiley face.

  • @greedkiller

    nice metaphor

  • Nice try. but its dire. The song is so unique you can never replicate it to anywhere near JD's standard - no matter which band tries it

  • You could only say that this song 'killed' the original if this version became ridiculously famous enough to drown out all previous recognition of this being a Joy Division original. But this song works well along side Control by acknowledging the sheer beauty of this song and the genius of Ian Curtis. A tribute :)

The kind of people who dislike the killers for doing this are the kind of people who wouldn't let this move forward. Songs are never sainted.

  • @NoBusesx I havent got a problem with them doing it. The problem is that it sucks and is very lazy. It sounds like it took an afternoon.

  • blasphemy

  • The original had of course had a certain despair about it, but something quite truimphant at the same time. Thats what Joy division did best. This version is just despair. and not even in a good way. Its depressing as fuck because it sounds like they did it in an afternoon.

  • Personally I think its really poor. And im not one that think "my bands"tunes are sacrosanct. I love Joy division. I just think bands like the killers are basically media whores who are relatively competent but absolutely fuck all to say. Nothing. Just another British Indie band on the conveyor belt to feed the innercity sad bastards who cant think of anything else to listen to. Sorry, but thats the way i feeel.

  • @cullyvan Yeah.. they're American, not Britain.

  • @Gowire Ok. My mistake. But i dont hear a lot of difference,

  • @cullyvan You're entitled to your opinion. Personally, I think this is a great cover. They've taken the song and implemented their own style into it. That's what I look for in a good cover, as opposed to just an imitation of the original.

  • I have a sneaky feeling that some people think of this as a horrible cover only because it actually is a pretty good cover that comes closer to the original than any other covers to the original. Don't be scared y'all, embrace it. This is a tribute. A great tribute.

  • worst cover of Joy Division EVER!!

  • la verdad es que no es un tan mal cover

    I love Joy division!!!

    Ian Curtis <3

  • this is a fucking joke

they couldnt have done a worse job

  • A very good, articulate cover. Simply doesn't equate to the original, though. It is impossible to replicate the raw emotion of Ian Curtis. Rest in peace, 18-5-10.

  • Excellent cover!

  • Actually, is a damn good cover. A homage to JD.

  • Great version :)

  • Very nice movie with great covers....

  • If The Killers wanted to pay homage they should have written in their album a thank you to Joy Division, instead of cashing in on them. FUCKING YANKS!!!

  • @KingSparkys They were asked to do the homage in Deborah's movie "Control" wanker....

  • @msstevieduck AHEM..... I think you might find that it was ANTON CORBIJN's movie based on DEBORAH CURTIS's "Touching From a Distance".... Think before you open your mouth and start calling people names, as you are the one who looks truly foolish now. :D

  • @KingSparkys No sparky...It was Deborah's book...she was the producer...CORBIJN's was just the director....Deborah HIRED CORBIJN....asswipe...

  • @msstevieduck Control marked Corbijn's debut as a MOVIE DIRECTOR, and he PAID HALF of the €4.5 MILLION budget out of his OWN POCKET making him the main PRODUCER. Deborah Curtis, Ian Curtis' widow, is a CO-PRODUCER, along with music mogul Tony Wilson, who died months before the film's release.

You really need to learn to think before making these crass statements. As once again you have been made to look stupid AGAIN..... and have done it with out swearing :D

  • @KingSparkys SHE ASKED Brandon flowers to play "Shadowplay" which was the point in the first place dickweed.....NOT that the Killers exploited IAN who was a sick little puppy turned "Rockgod" only after he offed himself....

  • @msstevieduck the song has lost any of the rawness and bite which made the original so powerful. The Killers released a cover of the song as a promotional single for their b-sides and rarities album, Sawdust. The song has been MASSACRED. Enough said on the topic.... Case Closed. Now enjoy your cover and wrap yourself in cotton wool and jump up and down on a fluffy bed with cuddly toys, coz this sound is soft, mainstream pop.... enjoy. Regardz... SPARKYS :)

  • @KingSparkys Oh please you stupid wiseass....It was Deborah Curtis' book AND movie....You start off bitching about the Killers having exploited Ian Curtis in doing the song WHEN in FACT they were ASKED this cover for the FILM....The MOVIE was an ADAPTATION of Deborah's BOOK...It was HER project....dumbass...the fact she did FINANCE doesn't change a fucking thing....It was a GREAT cover....You must be another cultist who knew NOTHING of IAN except what you read on WIKI...Backtracking wanker...

  • @msstevieduck I guess you must have read WIKI too.... Thank you for agreeing with me and correcting yourself. x

  • @KingSparkys lol....You mean that part where I said that the Killers exploited Ian and JD??? Oh wait...that WAS YOU!!!!

  • @KingSparkys You have to be a total idiot not to know the KILLERS were asked to cover SHADOWPLAY by Deborah and Corbijn.....to say they got over for cash is totally iditotic.....IT IS ALSO A BITCHIN cover. To suggest it should have been an exact duplicate of what JD did is asenine and ignores what true artists do when th y cover a tune....you should go judge some asswipe show like UK's most idiotic wankers....

  • I just downloaded this mp3 at mp3iifffy. Check that site out - its sick. Google mp3iifffy

  • The video is just absurd.

  • this cover is amazing

  • Cool tune yo like it

  • @ ikobe119 Well, then you must be one of a few having that same problem, so I'd recommend that you'd take care of this kind of Disorder, before you'd become one of those Lost Souls who cannot understand The Sound of Music anymore, and your situation will only get worse across the next Decades, if you see what I mean...

  • @ ikobe119 Hi, nice to receive your modest, humble reply :-D Well, you must agree that's a bit weird that someone liking the post-punk music made in the UK during the 80s as you admit, simply don't like JD. They've opened way for so many well known bands... If you'll listen carefully to the original Shadowplay theme, you'll easily identify some elements that later influenced Bauhaus, or Sisters of Mercy, to name only a couple... But I agree that JD (Still :-) are a world apart... Cheers!

  • Comment removed

  • @Shadowplaytime Absolutley Loving the wordplay, You just tore him a new one :)

  • lovin the dance!

  • One can only make a good cover by fully understanding the original theme, then working on its roots in order to try a new approach without bethraying its spirit. IMO The Killers didn't understand much of the original Joy Division´s theme, nor much of the JD legacy overall, I'm afraid...

  • you are fucking retarded. take kobe out of your name! no retard should bear the kobe name in their SN.

  • I think I only come on YouTube to listen to music while I read stupid ass comments like the ones below mine. Not the ones about the actual video/song but the ones that are callin eachother stupid cuz one person had a typo.

  • This time, original is much better just because of Joy Division. Anyway, love the cover, too.

  • Doing a cover of Shadowplay is like remaking the Karate Kid...oh, wait...

  • now why cant we have something like this to play in guitar hero and rock band?

love this song, though. really sold me to the killers.

  • The thing I love about this video and even this song is how it is the killers way of paying tribute to joy division. Its like Joy Division inspired their sound and this is the killers way of giving back.

  • @blueveil69 Unless they are stealing it and saying its theirown stuff, a cover is always a tribute.

  • Everybody gonna hate me after I say this;

This is Kristen's Stewart favorite music.

*TOMATOES ALL OVER MY FACE Xd*

  • Why would we hate you for that?

    Why should we even care?

Kristen stewart herself is just fine, i just hate the movies she acts in :]

  • Is it just me or do u guys think the bass part could b played out a little more.... im not a huge fan of the joy division version, but thts the one thing I did really like was the strong bass line

  • @blueveil69

Is it just me or do you think that people that can't spell words like "you", "be", and "that's" probably shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion. On anything. At all.

  • @EnderxWiggin2070 well you know what i live in the 315 okay, cut me some slack, maybe people arrogant enough to point it out shouldnt have an opinion.... god i hate it when people dont keep there comments focused on the music... what do u do, live to point out the faults in others?

  • You get but hurt over a guys opinion, and diss his grammar? YOU ARE A FUCKING PRICK.

  • "butt" not "but" dipshit. Your idiocy is impressive.

  • Oh I forgot a "t," that makes me an idiot. Good logic moron.

  • @MarcusKiner

You didn't forget a "t" it would be one thing if you had spelled a word improperly, what you did was blatantly use the wrong word. That would be like saying "know" instead of "no" or "won" instead of "one". You're an idiot.

So yes it does make you an idiot and I do believe that the logic is sound. I don't see you actually pointing out any logical flaws by the way.

  • Dude, it was a TYPO. Oh wait your grace is too good to know what that is? You're a loser. What are you youtube grammar police? Shut that ass please.

  • "Shut that ass"

Ass: a hoofed mammal of the horse family with a braying call, typically smaller than a horse and with longer ears. • Genus Equus, family Equidae: E. africanus of Africa, which is the ancestor of the domestic ass or donkey, and E. hemionus of Asia.

That or you meant the slang ass like jerk, but how would I be open in order to shut?

Or you meant ass as in buttocks (which you would spell as but). My buttocks are not open though, so mission accomplished?

  • Haha good one. You know what I meant, unless you aren't fluent in ebonics.

  • Not only am I not fluent in ebonics I have no desire to ever be fluent in ebonics, I feel it's a disgrace to the English language.

  • The english speaking people are a blemish on the face of humanity.

  • More appropriately humans are a blemish on the face of humanity.

  • I hear it's amazing when the Purple-stuffed worm in Flap-jaw space, with the tuning fork, does a raw-blink on Hari-kiri Rock! I need scissors! 61!

  • @MarcusKiner Your mom is a blemish on the face of humanity

  • Look, stop with the act, you're not fooling anybody. You wish you were some highly intelligent person; just cut the b.s. internet persona already.

  • Joy Division and Ian Curtius would be remembered today even if he did not hang himself. He had talent and vision and was a poetic mind...unfortunately he never made it to be a poetic MAN. His virgin couldn't mate with the father and his crone lost all hope for the soul behind the pressure and fear of being a father in a family the virgin's ship had set sail out of port for long ago. R>I>P of sand...

  • I'm a real die-hard JD and NO fan, and I think this is a great version...the only bass player who remotely sounds like Hooky!

  • Yeah- I'm a Killers fan, but this doesn't really work... seems like they'd laugh at this cover if someone else had done it.

  • cool pop'y version

  • Comment removed

  • still shit though

  • Comment removed

  • A bit harsh?

Surely in the spirit of JD?

  • this version is void of emotion, i see how they wanted to put their own edge on the song, but damn they fucked it up the arse.. ^^

  • the original was pretty emotional, amirite?

  • i think so.. i loves it is all i know..

  • @CokeAndPokemon

if you listen to the lyrics brandon sings without emotion; in a box in corner i found truth. there isn't supposed to be emotion

at 1:16 listen and a little after he says the other part.

the song is about him giving up

  • @CokeAndPokemon

i mean at 1:16 listen to the lyrics

  • Thanks - really clever!

  • ilove this song but the vid needs to show more of brandon

  • No whizwoop is right, this song isn't supposed to be 'bright' listen to the lyrics.

  • bad form wendymare...bad form...

  • Joy division are better at singing this

  • WRONG. You are wrong. ;)

  • this song is mint, but whats the video about i dont understand its just ian curtis getting depressed could someone please telll me what its all about

  • ye the killers did very well

  • I like that song. I love Joy Division.

  • i finish the movie like 5 minutes ago, it's great ;O!

  • original= dull and boring

killers cover= more f**king life than the original

u only have to listen to the start to tell the diff!

  • yes but it isnt meant to have colour

its meant to contain ians tortured soul

  • Yep, very true! xD

  • This is a brilliant cover. Different atmosphere from the original, true. But if u don't like it, listen to the original instead duh.

    Can't please everyone eh.....

  • ********88stars

  • i really like this versrion... :)

  • i dont see how people say they killed the original

this is one of thee best covers ive ever heard, its equal or even better than the original. and i prefer joy division over the killers.

  • no, how about you do.

  • @Sadiieex it's a great song nonetheless but it's nothing close to what the original was.

  • finally one were the embedding isnt disabled :) lol

  • killers killed the original

  • Woo, representing Bowie at 2:50!

  • Ooh Control is a gooood film :)

  • I think this is possibly the best cover of any song.

The Killers are so beautifully talented.

    Lydia

    xx

  • PURE CLASSIC
