Those police officers were using necessary force to protect themselves from a crowd violently pressing against them. And police officers CAN use necessary force to ensure compliance with their commands. The police were there, not to deny anyone free speech, but to remove several tents in an area where camping is not permitted. Those so-called protesters were attempting to physically prevent police from doing their job.

Our Supreme Court has established that local governments CAN issue "time, place, or manner" restrictions on public speech and assembly. Such restrictions must be "content-neutral" and serve a legitimate government interest. A restriction on setting up tents and overnight camping is well within the law and does not violate our Constitution. The constitutional rights of those students was NOT violated.
