Ralph, I wish I was born 50 years prior to my birth date so I could be there in the foothills listening to your honest, heart-filled voice over the radio!!!
I love had they do it in the old style not to may people do that this way anymore. My Papaw who is no longer with us Love him very much. He had ever Cd, and Record he ever had. We still got them now. I listen to them now on his old Record player. From 1940's.
I grew up in the old regular baptist church when I was younger. Hearing this singing brings back such sweet memories of my mother, grandmother and family. Such precious memories. Thank you Jesus!
I grew up in Primitive Baptist church where shape notes and no instruments was the way we sang. My dad being an Elder in the church when he passed we lined Blessed Assurance at his funeral it was very moving, also was a new way to feel the music and what the writer felt.
Ralph Stanley for President !!!!! this is one of my favorites, amazing grace was what my deceased mother wanted played at her funeral, and it was my duty as her son to fullfill that wish, she brought our family up on bluegrass and RALPH STANLEY WAS HER FAVORITE, thank you !!!!
I love this song!!!!!!I am sooo proud to be related to this man and I hope to meet him some day.I have heard all the stories about when himand mt great grandfather would have jam sessions.Wish I could have been there.
I grew up in a little Bapist church in Tennessee where the song leader "lined" the songs out like this back in the 60's...thought that's how you were supposed to do it. I still think this and shape note singing is truly beautiful. Nobody sings better than Dr. Ralph
ralph is a legend i love him and respect him, but i do wish that when he and his band members do these sacred songs they would take their hats off. seems like it would show more respect unto the songs of our LORD JESUS CHRIST..
This is sang in the Old Regular Baptist style. Many years ago when a lot of people couldn't read, the preacher would call out the words so that everyone could sing along even if they couldn't read the lyrics. My grandmother from Kentucky taught this to me when i was younger.
He didnt do Amazing Grace in either show...It would have been grand to sing along with him.
Maybe next time.
I did get to claw away on the banjo he had just finished the show with though, during autograph signings afterwards.
Quite an honor was that.
Just think...he was born and raised without running water or electricity, served in WWII, and today has a web-site, an e-mail address, and appears all over You-Tube.
I LOVE & always have loved Ralph Stanley's music. I grew up on his music growing up in Shannadoah Junction, West Virginia. You won't find no better music than his. This is the way music IS SUPPOSE to be.

I love to listen to him and it doesn't matter what the song is. I also miss Carter, probably the best bluegrass voice of them all. Wayne in Canada

Timeless, real and right. I first heard Dr. Stanley with this powerful interpretation on A Prairie Home Companion in the early 1980's.
