crap! i get their singing success program, struggling with lip roll and naynaynay, can't do what he is doing! so strain when going high and cant go up higher! i am giving up now!
I always wonder about this exercise, because my larynx rises every time, even though I can hit some high pitches with ease using it. "Mum" keeps it way more neutral. I'm not sure how useful this is for some people.
@dragoninfire123 i used to have a problem differentiating. a tip i learned was to put your tongue between your teeth and lips like you're focusing on something and make a sighing hum in one breath from the top of your range to the bottom. it should feel like your voice is thin at the top and thicker in the lower chestier part. you can go up too just make sure your voice doesn't break or flip in the middle.
@VcookiemonsterV im a tenor (i can sing from a b flat to a f) and i try all the tricks (like the ''gn'' sound) and all that stuff, when i get to the closest C to E near my F, i feel like a pression, and i cant get the pression off. then, i sing F or sometimes G, if REALLY tight (im pushing). so i cant go higher :(
@dragoninfire123 no idea. falsetto isn't a bad thing like most people tend to over exaggerate how you don't want it. just go listen to Bon Iver's song for emma forever ago acapella. pleasant enough for me
this is so annoying. can anyone tell me the actual notes you have to hit for this exercise. He says nay 13 times, but eveytime I try it I only get 11.
does anybody else get this weird chewbacca sounding thing when they sing? It's hard to explain, but outa nowhere, by voice just kinda sounds like chewbacca while i'm singing, it usually happens when i'm going higher. is this a bad thing? cuz it never hurts
I just can't sing the "nay nay nay" exercise. :/ when I reach the last note in each scale it sounds like falsetto. does anybody have an idea to help me ?
@JazzyMan1990 I see youre very optimistic person which is really cool. I wish you luck man! Btw, can you add me? So we can discuss about lip trills and singin on pitch etc. I need some info if you dont mind.
@JazzyMan1990 lol, Brett says if youre stuck on an exercise which you cant really do, you CAN MOVE ON :) . And come back later if youre ready to work on it. Omg, 3 months
@mark88bon I think he meant pulling both, because he demonstrated that doing it wrong could lead to yelling as well as the larynx being raised, resulting in the contraction of the digastric muscles and the choking feeling.
@zelda0521 same i only haf chest voice..and even for my falsetto, its a half falsetto, very airy and its pulling chest for falsetto too.can only hit few notes for falsetoo and hard for me to produce falsetto
I had the singing success program for a while but it never helped. I later found my mix with the toung curled and out excercise in bretts top7 vocal excercises. I reconmend anyone with trouble discovering their mix to try that excercise instead of the nays.
Right now I'm working on the styles stuff in singing success and mastering mix... My range really increased, now I just need to sound good.
As an owner of the singing success program I agree that the day the Nay kicked in it was very cool to feel your vocal chords go that high in a mix type voicing. I'm glad you posted this video so I can have things to watch for while doing these. Especially since the difference between doing them right and wrong is almost unperceivable. Thanks Chris.
@hboneta I have Singing Success too and I am interested how much it has helped you. because when I started this programme I was pretty good at singing already I just wanted to sing high notes with more power like whitney, Aretha, Mariah and many other singers, frankly speaking I don't think that the mix voice which they teach will ever become the great powerful voice that those singer sing with. there should be something else to reach their level. I am interested what do you think about it
@MrVigginight yeah its true, Adam is fantastic singer, he can sing like rock vocalist in high notes and he can also sing like pop singer, without power the same notes
@soposopo84 The program has helped me tremendously. It helped me find my own voice and use it in a way where it doesn't get tired as easily or abused by lack of technique.I am able to (imitate) more powerful voices but at a cost in stamina.Listen to Mariah and notice that she doesn't use her powerful voice as much as her heady voice.I also gained range and versatility, switching between different voicings (deeper, smoother, brassier, whispery, etc.) And it's just the start.
@soposopo84 If im not mistaken, what you look for is called forward placement. It's like directing your voice forward to one point instead of spreading it all over. The focus will make you sound stronger.
Btw mix voice will help you getting the high notes but not the power. Power is gained from forward placement and proper trained diaphragm.
@soposopo84 A lot of that has to do with physiological factors, like vocal chord thickness and the structure of ones mouth cavity(palate, pharynx, etc). But the only way any singer can sing powerfully, consistently and safely is by mixing the registers. You notice Whitney and Mariah dont sing like they used to, too much pulling up will cause vocal damage.Check out singers like Patti Labelle,Stevie Wonder and Steve Perry.Nothing wimpy about their mixes, and they can sing like that consistently:)
I cant erase my break, at first I start really powerful and as I go higher, it just breaks.

WIth pulling he means pulling the larynx up right? Not pulling chest. Because you can also sing heady with a high larynx. Am I right?
