where did you get this information? i heard that his little girl wrote a poem at school about jmk and he put it to music. just bc he had a problem early in life with substance abuse, that does not mean that his whole life revolves around it. i hope your version is incorrect.
I love the animation for this. I love this song too. Did you know that the true meaning behind the song is that "Jelly" is really "crack cocaine" and Jenny Mulhenny's father is a pusher who puts out the "fire" of Old Man Kelly's need for the drug? Originally, Taylor had wanted to call the song "Crack Man Jack" but Sesame Street sensors wouldn't allow it. And that's how we got "Jelly Man Kelly." True story.
I have to disagree with some of these comments - the studio version is good, but James puts inflections in his voice on the Sesame version that are GREAT! So what if the kids are a little loud?
:D I LOVE THIS SONG!! I used to own the singalong sesame sing along vid thing, and this was on here... and oh god I loved it. Well, I shouldn't say 'loved'. I still LOVE it!

@ZarathustraJohnson4 ....I don't believe thats true, I always read that his daughter wrote a poem when she was young and he turned it into the song!

@ZarathustraJohnson4 "Tea" is also slang for grass. And Taylor is known for his exploits in illegal substances.

@ZarathustraJohnson4 according to songfacts, it was inspired by and based on a poem written by his daughter sally taylor

@ZarathustraJohnson4 I heard it was a poem his little girl wrote at school that he set music to.

Great Tuba player. It is really hard to make a brass instrument sound so melodic (especially a tuba) unless you really know what you're doing.

You know what makes this better than the Sesame Street version? No screaming children.

I agree, James sounds better in that version, but at least this video doesn't have the kids who scream instead of sing.
