@oscie1 You do realized that not all German soldiers were Nazi. Many did not want to fight but were forced to as men of Germany. Even veterans of US and UK commend some of the German soldiers they fought. Grouping people together as a whole, based on the actions of a few, is basically the same way the Jewish were treated. Blame Hitler, SS, Third Reich, etc but not all German soldiers and public were a part of the atrocities.

Instead of feeling sorry for some soldiers you should feel happy for the millions of civilian germans who were not killed despite being as guilty as any soldier.

The allied invasion was really well-prepared, completely different from the Dieppe landing.

@notaire2 That's because the Dieppe landing was only a raid and not a full scale invasion. The only reason it was ever even taken on was because the Western Allies needed to appease Stalin who was pushing for a 2nd front to be opened as early as possible

@notaire2 Well it did serve a good purpose in that the Allies learned a lot from the raid. They knew never to try an invade a heavily defended port again. It also provided other valuable information; the Tactical Air Force wing of the RAF was set up as a result because of the major deficiencies in ground support techniques before this.

@notaire2 Actually Commandos and US Rangers completed their mission during the dieppe raid, they were able to knock out the some guns then were picked up by LCAs. The poor Canadians got stuck at the seawall with no where to go, the Germans picked em off one by one. god bless those boys. The success of the British commandos and American rangers gave them a good idea of how highly trained special units should be attached to Regular infantry regiments. 2nd Rangers attached to the 116th RCT, etc..
