JUST MISSED!!! "Cry Me A River" just missed making the Billboard's Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 9 weeks in the Hot Top 100 in 1970... Julie London's version in 1955 reached No. 9 and Janice Harper's 1960 release topped out at No. 91. Ms. London's version was featured in the 1956 rock 'n roll movie "The Girl Can't Help It"...
Love this. A young Joe at the top of his game, an always stoned looking Leon and pretty hippie chicks having fun singing . I was a sophomore in HS back then.
A smile spreads over my face. I lived in Maple Ridge 1 block north of Bro Leon. I had married an older man & we had young children (possibly the only ones in the hoity toity neighborhood). Blue-hairs had an absolute meltdown in Maple Ridge during those wonderful years as a result of my childrens' trikes & Leon's music & friends. I lived at 2144 Norfolk Terrace; I have actually seen elders duck into their homes then peep out from behind heavy drapes when Leon's friends would be out for a walk

I am 64 years young and i grew up on this great music! We had the best of the best! And i feel honored to have the privelege of having this great music experience in my youth and even now! I have all the original vinyls and in good shape too! and a turntable to listen to them! Many times i still dance to these songs, yes even at my age loool! Ill always love the 60s and 70s! Peace and love folks!
@babyRoses7 i saw him in concert in '70, and leon russel too. and that looks like leon on piano. .... i bought the leon russel and the shelter people l.p. and it came with a small paper record in it of a j.j. cale song. and it had a funny black kid introducing it and said: " jack and jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. jack fell down and broke his j.j. cale record...... "
@babyRoses7 That makes two of us. Although I'm only 51 (compared to your 64) I was playing drums in 1965 and in my first band by age 8. I saw my first concert in 1970 (Led Zeppelin) with my older brother and two of his friends. This is the greatest era in rock music history.
Man what a great old tune. Mr. Cocker and Mr. Russell kicked 9 kinds of ass. And i'm really diggin Pamela Polland in this video. Man she was cuter'n hell back then.
Rita Coolidge was indeed a backup singer. She also did a solo song, and was a real show stopper. I remember it well, as I was there.. one of the all time great tours..
@timbuckleyphoto Rita sang "Superstar" a song that was written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett. It was about the shabby way Eric Clapton treated his female fans.
THE GREAT JOE COCKER W/ LEGENDARY LEON RUSSEL ,CHRIS STAINTON, CARL RADLE ,RITA COOLIDGE,CLAUDIA LINNEAR, PAM POLLARD ,JIM KELTNER AMONG OTHER LEGENDARY MUSCIANS, JUST ASK @ JUDECREEK2,SHE SAW THE OPENING ACT OF MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN IN DETROIT IN 1970!!
@stalkingwolf1954 i especially gotta like rita coolidge, since we both went to fsu. seriously, she is an amazing singer, and i am always a little shocked that she doesn't get the attention she deserves.
Is Rita Coolodge one of the excellent Hippie back-up singers on this? Never knew. Thanks for this little tid bit of music trivia I can add to my wealth of useless music triva knowledge!!!
Before Leon got together with Elton John, he was playing small venues and clubs. There were a lot of us following him. I've been lucky enough to be right next to him while he was playing and singing. Doubt he'll go back to that again, though.
What an amazing time in the evolution of music. An astonishing capture of what happened during that era. I am amazed at the performance. Nothing held back. Everyone was in the same space. Sadly, this can never happen today. All you youngsters, learn from the past. A treasure to be sure!!!
This is from the era when you could actually go see all the artist of the time and not have to take out a bank loan to do it!!! I saw sooo ,many concerts during the sixties and seventies, and I don't think I ever paid over $20.00 for a ticket and $20.00 was considered pricey.
@TheMustangsally75 Was just thinking about the time George Harrison brought his Dark Horse tour thru Tulsa, Oklahoma. Leon Russell made a surprise appearance. Billy Preston and Ravi Shankar were also part of the amazing show. I still have my ticket. It was $12 - priceless!!!
My best friend lived in Boston during this tour. He and some other guys went to the Filmore to see this concert w/o tickets. I stayed behind thinking there is no way they would ever find tix. They not only got in but were in the front row that night. Talk about regrets in your live.
@TheNoteCollector My brother took me to this show in Detroit because our parents told him he had to or he couldn't go. I was 14, and I didn't even really want to go, but that night I fell under Leon's spell and became a life long fan.
One of the greatest live rock performances from one of the most intense performers of all time! Why does the stupid camera man film the backup singers half of the video?? Jeeez!
@MissCreee1 Simply because those girls/guys are part of the what makes this video
so appealing. Oh, the inocense of it all!!
One thing we should all learn , you really can't mix politics with art - to reason why today's failures are caused by yesterdays generation, can't we all just appreciate the performance?
Fantastic.! Joe Cocker providing enough energy to power a small town for a week - Leon Russell, what a showman, what professionals all, stoned or not., has anyone identified the backing singers yet?.......
@oxfordbow if you search on wikipedia for mad dogs and englishmen you can find the whole crew list, pretty amazing the talent and the history from this one tour. rock on and on....
Bro Leon creates the musical environ which allows Joe to remove his skin, merge his mechanical, physical, and biochemical possessions with the sounds being released from his Soul (Psyche). This is not coincidence, rather a synchronic event which compels the audience (that includes us) to experience the rarest & most beautiful form of Art.
I can still remember almost all the lyrics to all the songs by heart. One of my most played albums way back in the early 70's. Seeing this film over and over was the closest I could ever get to being at a real rock concert. Wow did Joe and Leon rock together! This is the real deal.
Joe,L:eon, and Steven Tyler all three have the strongest "raspy voices" yet later in their careers mellow out into incredible melodic voices..am I the only one that thinks that? I just wonder how beautiful Janis's voice would be today(sigh).
Is it only me or does anyone else take note that the 'rasopy rockers' like joe,Steven tyler and even Leon mature into the greatest mellow voices later in their careeers?
@catcando75 Yep that sums up my feelings exactly ! God only knows why they didn't put this on the dvd.. Just ordered 2 more copies from Amazon in case my current one gets scratched :) Don't understand how anyone with ears could dislike this - I think it's one of the most exciting live performances captured on film
@kramerdc9 get bent! Grow up, get a life, Aplogize to your mother for being an asshole, and tell your father you WILL become something constructive to society!
Now, to the REAL Joe Cocker fans out there, WOW,eh? What a treat to find this piece of history. Brings back a lot of great memories from my days during the 70's. OH YEAH! Thanks for posting this. scampi99, you have made a great many people happy. 8-)
