@PorroFirst Do you really hate the song, or just hate one (or both) singers? I'm sure you can somehow relate to the line "I grew up there so don't talk about my city"
@illadelfea I think the singers do a surprisingly good job.. But when I think about the lyrics and the music RAW, so to speak, they're pretty awful. I think Booker's touch on the keyboard is great, but he's a pretty amateur songwriter. That's just my opinion.
@PorroFirst understood...certainly can't fault you for your opinion about music. Didn't mean to sound like I was chiding you or anything. I'm just extremely partial to Matt Berninger. The guy is a genius. But you are right Booker ultimately wrote the song and Matt just provides vocals here. Cheers!
@pearsnockie I'm listening to the whole thing, trying to find someone who I can relate to - through the words and music I'm searching for an artist that shares a soul with me. But lyrics like that put me off.
Ms Jones's vocals are perfect & authentic. She & the music are exactly how it feels to cruise a shaded by ancient trees directional parkway on a 100+ july day. However, as much as I ♥ the National for the vocals, Berninger wasn't the best choice for this. I really hate to say this because I don't care for his work personaly, but Ben Nichols would have been a better choice. It just makes me break into giggles thinking about Matt Berniger hanging out in Haney Park & throws off the whole mood.
@hiphopmomo Amen! I want a mix of this with less of the male vocal (even though I love his band because of his vocals!) and longer. Memphis ladies like to dance this butt/hip sway dance kinda way that "builds" as the music goes on. This version is too short to enjoy the way it wants to be enjoyed!
Wow. Heard this song on WERS in Boston and loved it. Had no idea until later that it was Sharon Jones and the guy from The National, both real talents. I thought the organ was killer too, not realizing it was Booker T. Really good.
@scoutcollins that's funny i heard it o WERS today...checked out the playlist later and found the song name...good shit, im gonna put on that station more often
What? No mention of black gang-bangers goin' into East Memphis to "kill-a-cracker" as gang initiation? Shame on you Booker T! R.I.P.... Angela Perkins(1972-1994)
Beautiful song. Just noticed it's the singer of The National singing, and although I don't like that band that much, he did a great job here. But to me all credits should go to the fantastic organ sound and Sharon Jones' vocals.
@CSM100MK2 I think the person just said try to stop picking fights, you know, just pause being an asshole for a little while, just a little while, and praise God through music. Can i get an Amen?
Lou Reed's participation threw me a little, but "Potato Hole" was superb... and from what I have heard this is actually one of the lesser cuts. So, basically, it should kick ass all over the place.
If the rest of the album is anything like this song, it's gonna go down as one of the greats by Booker T. I especially appreciate that Questlove is involved.
Just heard this on a car radio. Had to check it out. I likes. Makes me wanna represent Memphis even if I'm from Boston. Love Sharon Jones.

People say me BIG dreams as mine don’t come true.
But I say them “There are no impossible dreams but there is people incapable to achieve their dreams”
I make cover videos, and my dream is to become a Singer.
MUSIC is all I need to be for my life and able to achieve my greatest dream, triumph with it.
I’d love if you just give me a chance and stop by my channel Also if you could thumbs up this comment so other people can see it. That’s all it takes.
