Love the vid! Thanks for sharing your collection and knowledge of the great inventor of the electric bass! As some have mentioned more facts could have been presented or tried to pick apart/correct your words, but we will all wait for a special on the History Channel for the 100% accuracy and details of Leo Fender's life. I appreciate your views and opinions as a luthier none the less. Thanks again, Cheers!
In my opinion, the video is poorly researched and very surface level at best. Also, the basses you are showing don't appear to period instruments, but newer ones. Plus, it's very unprofessional to use explicit language in something that is supposed to educational.

@theamazingbeatboxer they were thought to do the same as the chrome covers on the guitar pickups (tele neck and some gibson humbuckers) but its too far away to do anything to the magnetic field, so it just looks pretty. Gets in the way of some peoples playing, others dont mind it.
@mit7771 no he didn't, there were solid body style guitars before les paul built his guitar. and the guitar that les paul built was more of a semi-hollow body rather than a true solid body guitar anyways.
Tutmarc's Audiovox Manufacturing Co. was one of the very first firms to produce an electric lap steel guitar, and Tutmarc himself was often the demonstrator and promoter. He invented an electric upright "bull-fiddle" in 1935 but it mainly served as a publicity tool. His real claim-to-fame was the marketing of the fretted and solid-body (Model #736) "Electronic Bass Fiddle" which was designed to be used in a horizontal position.
Hey man nice video and nice basses! It makes me sad that I sold my G&L SB1 years ago....I was young and stupid. I couldn't help but notice the Phil Jones amp toward the end. I use nothing but these. In my opinion the best amp out there.
@davey4557 bloody hell! nice selection! i'm only 16 so don't really have to money or had the time to build up something like that but wow! I was going to get a mexican jazz bass the other day but when i went to buy it i got won over buy a hofner contempory series violin bass...the same price but like something about the hofenr is just like WOW! haha
1) No explanation of the significance of active electronics in the StingRay.
2) Leo considered his G&L MFD basses to be the pinnacle of his work, and there is no mention of them at all in this video.
3) Having 21 frets presents a 3-octave range from the low E to the highest fret on the 1st string; not 2 octaves as stated erroneously twice in the video. The only way to truly get 2 octaves (per string) on the neck is 24 frets.
@davey4557 It looks quite nice. There is a good video here with Ed Friedland demo'ing the bass. I tried to post a direct link, but YouTube wont let me.
Hey Dave Nice Vid...... Can't believe I missed this one from last year, must have been caught up watching re-runs of F troop! hee hee

What an amazing collection!

the extra fret was onnly the 21st fret, it wasn't the full octave(24th fret)
all in all it was still pretty interesting :)
1pixle 9 months ago
@1pixle he meant that i could achieve another octave of another note, in this case it completes the e octave.

Hey I have a question. Do those silver pick-up covers for the P-Bass do anything?

I think Fender was the first one to massproduce the electric bass, but there were people with electric basses they built themselves in the 1930's

This vid has 3 flaws:
1) No explanation of the significance of active electronics in the StingRay.
2) Leo considered his G&L MFD basses to be the pinnacle of his work, and there is no mention of them at all in this video.
3) Having 21 frets presents a 3-octave range from the low E to the highest fret on the 1st string; not 2 octaves as stated erroneously twice in the video. The only way to truly get 2 octaves (per string) on the neck is 24 frets.

Have you tried the 50th Anniversary Fender Jazz bass? It combines various design elements from the all the jazz basses.

Im surprised you keep such vintage instruments near a window... with the weather and heat changes, moisture etc... wood likes to warp and contort.
