  • Thanks headhardhat!

  • This video is spot on. I have seen quite a few caches even in my own area that I am not sure how they got approved or haven't been flagged. I don't think their owners had any bad intentions and some of the caches have certainly been fun....but...I wish all would watch this video!

  • wow all that terrorist shit sucks ass. Im glad to be an aussie geocacher

  • i live in cary haheh

  • If these rules were followed in my area 90% or more of the caches would be gone!

  • I am a kinda beginner cacher... on my 7th cache and I hid one... at the moment I am using no phone or GPS (besides the car one) and I am using maps. When is it time to get a GPS?

  • @catepillar55 Right now, buy one.

  • dude is such a little girl if you aren't comfortable with something.... dont do it. i wouldn't hide a cache near an airport for example but i don't think it's wrong. so much FEAR. just have fun.

  • north carolina rules!!!!

  • Shes stealing your ammo box hey look HEY BEHIND YOU

it's not like i can tell him

  • Comment removed

  • keep them away from schools. please.

  • do not hide a geo cache in uranus

  • nice video

  • 2:26 ....pardon me.

  • I hid my first cache I had to be sneaky about it

  • thanks for the info, but aren't most of these common sense? if you can't figure these out maybe you shouldn't be playing the game.

  • Awesome vid, some good points I hadn't thought of (like not hiding by bridges). I'm new to caching but want to make sure that when I place one, it's in a good (and safe!) spot. Fantastic way to get out and see some of the countryside, I love it!

  • I got clear written permission from my local fire department to hide it near the station and hid it in a clear bottle. the police still blew it up. am i allowed to replace that cache with another since I have written permission?

  • @MrNick8536 I would say yes and no. Based off the geocaching rules you can replace the cache however I would notify your local police department as well as the fire department. That way they'll have it on record what the cache looks like (include a picture for them maybe?) and know that it isn't a bomb.

  • Are hollow trees ok? Like the ones where animals used to live? Cuz I hid a geocache in a tree like that

  • @Rexbnl ....i'm thinking snakes,scorpions...prolly NOT cool!

  • @Rexbnl Hollow trees are usually perfect as long as you make sure the cache doesn't fall down into the tree.

  • this would have ben good to watch befor i hid a geocache in the train tunnel near my house- then the cops came and told me to immediatly take it out.

  • I found one in lodon uder a statue of gandhi in plain view on purpose and no muggles took anything.

  • 5:15 what the hell was that???

  • Thanks for the tips! Keep on caching!

  • Don't hide it in moving car or granny's knickers...

  • I had to climb up a cliff that was about 70-75 degrees steep, about 60 feet up. Oh.. on top of that, it was WET SILT. It wasn't just because it rained, there was a fucking RIVER going through it. We sunk at least 4 feet in and it was nearly pitch black. What a great time..

  • @flare8809

    sounds like a 2/2

  • im a young cacher in NC and i love seeing other cachers interested. thanks for the video

  • so if one were to find a geocache in a spot that it's not suppose to be in, like the places you mentioned, what should the finder do? should the finder place back in the inappropriate spot or move it to a safer location, obviously not miles away of course?

  • Hmm.. I got sad when i looked at this vid. Seems like you ppl in the us of a cant do anything without breaking this or that law. You think you live in a "free" country but you are restraind by all your strange rules.

  • @xzerosTM so you think that not placing geocaches on live train tracks, on private property, or on government property is strange? okay then justify it.

  • OPFAAAAAAAAAA

  • Comment removed

  • Someting else to keep in mind regarding railway tracks and the right-of-way beside the tracks which the signals are on, since they are private property, you are subject to fines and or imprisonment. Railway police take trespassing seriously. That will take all the fun out of a day of caching pretty quick..

  • @Nomad445 Absolutely true. A lot of people do not realize that it is trespassing. Great point.

    -HHH

  • @Nomad445 too true I have one in my area that is a multi the CO placed it a mile down range what would not work is placing it next to the water tower the railroad uses it all the time. in my area boundary line for the railroad is the line poles anywhere with in 150 feet it will be taken.

  • i found a geocach near my house on op of a rock so i hid it better ok

  • I have a question more about the rules of GeoCaching. now i have been cashing for a while and have made my own caches. But the other day I came across one cache that had like a ghilie on it, it had grass as a base and sicks and leaves glued on it. Now, to the official rules of Geocaching, are you allowed to have a cache that has a ghilie on it?

  • I've just started geocaching and started a team. We call ourselves Chazowntrekerz. (Our blog linked on my channel explains the name, lol). We're getting pretty pro at making geocaching videos, we've had some crazy adventures! We were just looking for a good place to hide our team's first cache, I must confess... the place we were looking is close to a rail way... but I think we're gonna rethink it. Thanks for the vid!!!

  • Have you lost weight you seem skinner in your more recent videos.

  • I like to geo cache, I got my handheld from gpssatnavreviews (.) com

  • Head Hard Hat I seen a cache in my area placed near an airport runway. the CO better have this one clear or the FAA is going to take it.

  • @geomodelrailroader Yeah not smart for a bunch of reasons. It is just better now a days to stay away for airports and the like. Most of the rules state this now.

  • @headhardhat LOL if it is in a city or next to a public place it needs to be clear or the authorities will take it. No PVC (looks like a pipe bomb) No boxes that look like a bomb (it needs to be clear) and if its an Ammo Box thats a no no (the cops will think its a bomb) thanks for the tip I will avoid bridges, tunnels, airports, and anyplace that someone thinks a cache is a bomb. tree hides are the best I will find a tree or a rock and hide one here.

  • @geomodelrailroader its true. I'm in Toronto, and I just started geocaching. Just last spring there was a story in the news paper of police finding a geocache, not knowing what it was, blew it up because they didn't want to look inside!

  • @sampson028 lol sometimes the cops are on our side sometimes they are not as Head Hard Hat and I said if the cache is not clear or looks like a bomb they will blow it up

  • are underwater caches anygood because i wanted to hide one just like that

  • @MrGenecide101 They are. I've found a few. You just gotta keep in mind that it must be 100%+ waterproof. Also make sure that it is very secure where you put it. You can't just lay one on the bottom of a lake and think its ok.

  • what about underwater geocaches are they a good idea or not

  • @MrGenecide101 There are not many under water geocaches out there but they range from in shallows, skin diving depth and even scuba. Absolutely a good idea but make sure the container is worthy.

    -HHH

  • Its like a 1980's Bulling video LOL

  • its ok if its under a bridge

just say the bridge was hiding above your geocache

  • @tspo614 Muggles get paranoid with things they don't understand. I mean how many bridges do we actually know of that are being blown up by terrorists? Yet they panic. Shame that this is what society dictates.

    -HHH

  • @headhardhat Well if muggles can easily find it then it's just a bad hide to start with. Being under a bridge or not is irrelevant.

  • @Razorfish I agree with you completely that if muggles can find it easily that it is not a good hide.

    -HHH

  • Every second geocache I find is hidden under a bridge!

  • @kieranbennettmedia It all depends on the kind of bridge but ones that are in public view really should not be used. Not in this day and age.

    -HHH

  • Haha :) "Lets face it: big guy like me walking around children's playground. Doesn't look good!"

  • @The70sDiscoKing And this wasn't like that time I was wearing a coconut bra and fruit basket hat :)

    -HHH

  • I don't think a pipe will work Head Head Hat if it is placed by a bridge it will look like a pipe bomb.

  • @geomodelrailroader Oh so true...

    -HHH

  • @headhardhat LOL a PVC pipe will look funny next to a bridge

  • do you have a regular account or premium account???

  • @ccwlandarch Oh I bought my premium account the second I started geocaching. The pocket queries alone are worth the yearly price.

    -HHH

  • @headhardhat I found my first travel bug how do i register it

  • @ccwlandarch A regular account is basic.

  • i got exceptions to alot of them not the train tracks though .

i live in a rural area and the police wont blow it up the nearest bomb squad is three hours away and tons of people hide stuff on monuments but not to many know how to make a bomb in indiana

great vid though i was gona make a geocache today under an old bridge in the country lolololol

  • @7pitcher still it is a bad idea to place a cache of a monument

  • @7pitcher It is like anything with geocaching. There are areas you may get away with it but is it worth the bomb squad charging you for a bomb run? or worse. If you can get permission for the hide will save you a lot of grief or you will be told it is better NOT to hide one there. Either way it will be better for everyone.

    -HHH

  • But what if the train tracks are not used anymore ie: abandoned? Do the same rules still apply?

  • @dawg1157 Abandoned train tracks are fine as long as you have permission of course. I have a whole series called Playing on the Train Tracks which are geocaching hides either on abandoned tracks or trails that used to be train tracks.

  • I loved the part at 2:16 "Well Duh!"

  • @dbfelber LOL steeping on train tracks is trespassing plus the railroad goes through with video cameras on their speeders any object tracks will taken same goes for signals. Don't place any caches on railroad property avoid water towers, line poles, relays, and signals. if the railroad finds a cache on the tracks or their equipment or you get caught it is a one way ticket to jail.

  • I would hide the cache under the branches next time Head Hard Hat. at 5:32 Geoness stole your Geocache. thanks for the advice when I place a cache I will never do the stupid thing of leaving it in the open.

  • Do NOOOOOOOOOOOT hide a geocache near a lava flow! If you have to ask yourself why, then DUUUUH! Lava is liquefied rock, and you wouldn't want anyone to get instantly burned to death!

  • @adchso not if it is solid. solid lava pits are good places to hide a cache.

  • good advice Head Hard Hat I am in a town I will use clear for town camouflage for the sage brush.

  • Head Hard Hat that's dangerous I don't like it when people put geocaches on train tracks plus the railroad searches it every day. good advise Head Hard Hat I will avoid the train tracks when I place one.

  • @geomodelrailroader Yeppers, remember also that train tracks are private property and walking on them is actually trespassing. Good advice to avoid live train tracks in general.

    -HHH

  • @headhardhat LOL I will find a place that is out of the way are hidden well

  • The same with express ways it shouldn't be allowed

  • @dn1440dn I agree freeways also fall under the don't category

  • @geomodelrailroader Kids are known to fall and scrape them selves on train tracks also

  • @dnave21 LOL plus its illegal to walk on them

  • Comment removed

  • I recommend not to hide a geocache in a residential area. I hid one it did not go to well. To many muggles.

  • @ndavid27 I always feel uncomfortable with residential hides and many times just skip them when I realize that the geocache is in too exposed of an area.

    -HHH

  • @headhardhat what if you made it different stages and lock a box up with a 4 digit number and you have to figure out what the 4 numbers are by finding 3 other hidden caches and in each of them it will tell you the code to put in, that way it cant be messed with? ive seen one where someone did that

  • Don't hide geocaches in a resident area people may freak out seeing people nosing around.

  • geocaching so FUNNN

  • I have a cache named Bridge to Higher Education on a collage campus it might need to be moved because one of the rules is don't hide a cache near a bridge and this bridge is on a nature trail. also some of the caches are getting mugged I wonder why?

  • @UP5314 Well hold on a sec. If the bridge is like one of those wooden walking bridges over a swampy area there is no problem with putting one there (with permission). The ones you want to avoid are the high exposure placements near road bridges where people would think terrorist hiding a bomb situations. I know many nature trail bridge hides just watch out for the snakes :)

  • @headhardhat thanks Head Hard Hat I will keep that in mind

  • dont put them near busy highway over pases or under them

  • good ideas.

    thanx...

    ...tom

  • Your buzzer is just annoying

  • @aceofspades25 It's supposed to be.. Kind of like a wrong answer on a game show... Thanks for writing in tho :)

  • Thanks Head Hard Hat I have caches that are in my area that are near Train Tracks I am going to avoid them

  • Well, this probably means that we have to archive almost every cache in the cities of Latvia. LOL

  • great vid. Im pretty new to the scene and didnt know about some of the rules you mentioned, thanks a bunch!

  • With train tracks one should also remember that the tracks are also Private Property.

  • This is almost like prompting geocachers to put bomb stickers on caches.

  • Now that's what i am talking about. Good post

headhardhat! Keep up the good work. I am learning a lot from you . 5/5

  • Glad you are enjoying them. Please let me know if you need to know or want to know about geocaching.

    -HHH

  • go team angrydragon!

  • oh aubrey!

  • omg my friend does not understand what geocaching is! one geocach i had to climb a tree. its hard to belaive ive been living and never noticed before its crazy!

  • Welcome to the obsession :) Yeah trying to explain the excitement of geocaching to others who have not experienced it is like trying to explain a chick hatching. Sure you may learn the mechanics of it but until you actually see it happen... :)

    -HHH

  • Ha Ha at 5:33.

  • Glad you liked it.. Try to put in humor when ever possible.

    -HHH

  • traintracks: suicide geocaching. cmon. we played htis before

  • Not exactly sure what you are getting at tzeqin. Though I would not recommend suicide geocaching. For one you can only play once and what would be the fun in that?

    -HHH

  • @headhardhat - It's like a gamble with life: to see how long one of us dorky adrenaline junkies can stay alive // Sorrry for the post tho. Depressed & drunk YouTubing :D

lol on your last sentence tho - very funny (:

  • There is some misleading info here. Do not hide caches on or near bridges, even using clear containers. The reviewer doesn't care whether it is clear or not. It is a guideline violation.

  • I understand what you are say though the rules state the following: Caches near, on or under public structures deemed potential or possible targets for terrorist attacks. These may include but are not limited to highway bridges, dams, government buildings, elementary and secondary schools, and airports. Not all bridges are highway bridges including thew one shown in the video so you can with permission hide by some bridges...

  • @ezechube That's why our country is the safest, greatest country in the world! We have rules, No, if you get caught with a GPS the police mace you and arrest you. Up to 20 years in prison.

  • Great show ... good tips. Thanks for sharing. Happy geohunting.

  • I got a little tip that I forgot to put in my last comment. I get surplus ammo boxes for some of my caches and my dad works with glass, he does picture frameing. I have cut holes in the side of some ammo boxes and put glass taped then glued and sealed to the box, it works nicely

  • There is old train trax near my house and there is like 20 caches along the trax, they go like 7 miles

  • What about if it was next to a rail track, but in between the cache and track was a fence? There is alot of caches in my area that I live that do this.

  • It all depends on the reviewers in your area, some will look at the 150 feet rule and totally say no, other will see the fence as an obstacle blocking you from getting on the track and might permit it.

  • What I don't mention in the video that I learned later is that railroad tracks are actually private property and walking on or near them is considered trespassing. So that alone is against geocaching rules.. Just something else to consider... -HHH

  • Hey ezechube,

Our country is doing just fine and thanks for watching Geosnippits. You are so right about not acting suspicious around government facilities. Unless you want to spend some time talking to the local police force or worse.

You can use GPS devices in the US out in the open all you want. There are no laws that I can think of unless it is a restricted area which would be the same as not being able to use a cell phone either. Thanks for letting us know what you think..

    -HHH

  • No trains go through our train tracks.

  • That's a good thing then when it comes to geocaching. You may though still have a tough time getting a geocache approved on them regardless. Remember that train tracks are private property and you actually could get in trouble trespassing. Just a thought. -HHH

  • I found a geo catch and thought it was a list of drug dealer names or something going to go put it back LOL

  • I think the geocache owner would appreciate it.. If you ever have any questions about geocaching, please let me know. -HHH

  • i cant find any geocaches near lenexa, kansas :(

  • Hmmm, there are 600 geocaches within 10 miles of Lenexa, Kansas. What are you having difficulty with? What are you using to try and find them? -HHH

  • I have been geocaching in Norway and The Netherlands, and i must say, every country does this very different!

In the Netherlands its very strict, get permission, they will look it through.

But in Norway...i have been to several railway caches VERY near the tracks and a cache placed on a MILITARY air plane base, saying with a BIG sign : DO NOT ENTER, Military! Still they are there, i dont understand how the people got those through!

  • Hmmmmmmm....I can't think of a single Historic Marker that I have been to in the last few years that DID NOT have at least one geocache hidden either on it or very nearby. Also, I gave up on a 3-stage multi a couple of years ago when I found that stage 2 REQUIRED trespassing more than a mile into a military installation. Those guys that review the caches for publishing really pay attention, don't they??

  • I agree about the markers and it really is a mixed bag when it comes to placing a geocache near one. I personally don't have problem. It's when groundskeepers or muggles that find any geocache big enough to be a potential bomb is the issue. Especially if you can't see the contents inside. We have to be so careful and use a little common sense when doing placements. And as for the no trespassing, we have to use the thing between our ears when hiding a geocache.

  • excellent, funny video. just discovered geocaching and I love it. made a little video about it too!

  • Great video, I've never hidden a geocache but I may in the future, so these are good things to keep in mind. Another place not to hide a geocache is in a burn pile. This might sound random but I've actually witnessed it. I was like what a retard!

  • I agree that would be a very bad idea. Glad you like the videos and remember when you do make a geocache make it sturdy, waterproof and in a location people will want to go and visit it.... Have fun.

    -HHH

  • This is a great series. I'm new to the game, and have picked up many helpful tidbits while watching these videos. How about an episode on muggles?

  • I have added that suggestion to our list. I think that is a great idea.. thanks!

    -HHH

  • Great question. The rule of thumb is always try to get permission from the land owner. Even if it is public property 'somebody' owns it. Always better to get permission first. If you absolutely cannot find out who it is I would try it but make sure you leave contact information so if the owner does decide they do not want it there they can at least let you know. -HHH

  • Great tips and warnings too .... it never crossed my mind that my kids could come upon a dangerous cache. They race to be the first to find it. I'll be re-thinking whether or not to let them do that in future. You never know in this day and age what you might come upon. Also, we've never hidden a cache (yet) but your tips and advice were wonderful. Thanks !

  • My question: What the hell is a Geocache?

  • haha

  • you can see the 'reply printout' is blank on 0:44 so explain that!

  • Sorry do not know what you are asking - HHH

  • At 0:44 it looks like the sheet of replys is blank. I might be mistaken, though

  • Oh you are correct the pages look blank. The truth is we were using a very inexpensive photo camera when filming it so the quality is not that great. The pages were just "whiting out" because they were in direct sunlight. Otherwise you would have seen the print. Good catch tho. I'm glad people are keeping me honest...

  • Great vid, thanks

  • Why thank you. We do try.

  • Thanks for the video!

  • Thank you for your kind words we do hope to help people who are new to geocaching. -HHH

  • Great video and advice! You'd think a lot of it would be common sense... but we've still seen some pretty silly stuff!

  • Yup, I do to but hopefully it helps with some. -HHH

  • Good Job

  • Why thank you so very much for the kind words. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. -HHH

  • Thanks a5414.. I am trying and hopefully it shows in the videos as we make them.. Thanks again. -HHH

  • Great job HHH, these videos are a great service for geocachers. Keep up the good work.

    -Hitech Squirrel

  • Your videos are wonderful! I've been hearing about them on podcacher and on the forums. I'm an experienced cacher, but I'm still enjoying (and learning) from your videos. I'm definitely going to share them with friends who are newbie cachers. Thanks so much for this fabulous gift to the caching community. -Rozie (nymphnsatyr Eugene, OR)

  • Thanks for the kind words rozparadox. I really have found enjoyment doing GeoSnippits and giving back to the community that spands all across the planet is quite fun. Have made a lot of friends. -HHH

  • we did a muti called BUG<BUGS<BUGs and it was muggled when we got there the log book was on the ground and all the things were everywhere not fun to do a muti and end with a muggled geocahe

  • Having a muggled geocache can be down right disheartening for the op and the finders. I recently had on muggled where they took everything but the lid that still had "Do Not Remove" on it. Sometimes wonder if geocachers do that. Pity really.

  • it is a pity i agree

  • Great video quality, sucky audio quality (too low sample rate) - sounds "buzzy".

  • Ya know, we take the good, the bad and the fuzzy. So thanks for your comments. Please keep in mind we have zero budget and we film with minimal equipment. Any donations for a decent video recorder and some audio equipment would be most welcome... Any takers?

  • Once gain a great vid..!

HHH, if you, or somebody of your viewers, want your Coins or TBs travel around Germany/Europe, just drop me a line and send it to me via mail.

I also mailed my TB to a girl in CA where its on its course back to Germany.

Just an offer for the worldwide community...:-)

  • Well done. Fun to watch and good information. Visually interesting, with the different camera angles and relevant location shots. Liked the quick bits of humor with the kids. I also liked that you emphasized the important info by adding text on the screen.

  • Thank you very much. One of the things that I learned as an internal trainer is that different people comprehend in different ways. So if I can get the information presented more generally all the better. Thanks for the great comments. -HHH

  • Check this one out GCP6BM.

  • Oh my goodness. Well that is definately not a place a big guy like me will be going for. Lets face it geocaching can be just as much of an extreme sport as the rest of them. Luckily I can get a nice 2/2 smiley for a lot less stress than that 5/5 smiley... Phew if I was 30 years younger... Naw...

  • Glad I'm not the only one who feels weird searching for caches in playgrounds, near equipment. In my short time in geoaching I've encountered one risky cache under a road bridge, within an arms length of some youths smoking the weird stuff. The cache was muggled some weeks later and subsequently relocated. Bridges in suburbia brings another risk factor - stumbling on kids and their illicit drugs.! Good vid. Thanks

  • Oh you are so right rog3112. When it comes to trying to find caches near houses, businesses and especially kids playgrounds - no way. Heck I'm a grandpa and love kids but some people will not look at it that way.... Why take the chance?

  • Very good

  • Thank you very much... There will be more... Keep the suggestions coming...

  • What a coincidence that when this video comes out one of my caches gets muggled...I mean really? Who would look under a footbridge by a pond that you have to bushwack to other than geocachers? I thought it was a good place. Anyways, good video.

  • Thank you so much on the nice comments.. We are going to be making a whole series on these including How NOT to hide geocaches and more Where NOT to hide geocaches... Stat tuned..
