  • @Tippet76 sportsmanships for losers, if you tell someone to stop celebrating youre just a buzzkill

  • gosh when you get to this high level the blades look like long liquorice sticks flopping all over the place

  • greatest final ever

  • whats the wire attached to their waiste

  • @presbarkeep Their jackets register hits electronically. The wire is part of the scoring system. They're actually not much of an issue to the fencer, though. They don't pull by any noticeable amount.

  • can some one tell me why 2 Italian are fencing each other at :59

  • @CameraMan4000 A bit late to answer but still, :p I guess they might be dueling for who goes to the final, seeing as there was an italian finishing second as well.

  • @CameraMan4000 Read the title: INDIVIDUAL

  • 2:49-2:57 That is a very gentlemanly way to react to defeating your opponent. What a class act that guy was :P The Chinese guy is thinking "3rd place? Well, I'm going to be executed in public square."

  • @Tippet76 What, you wouldn't be happy if you just pulled won the final match of a tournament? The winners scream in plenty of sports, and especially in fencing.

  • @Selryam616 I would be happy but I would still be respectful. Bill Belichick, coaches the Patriots into winning the Superbowl, the first time that the Pats have won a superbowl in franchise history, and he puts his arms up; that's it. Tom Brady walks over and shakes the opposing qb and coaches hand without even a smile on his face. That's being a gentleman. Jumping up and down screaming like a six year old is not respectful to the his opponent, the sport, or himself.

  • @Tippet76 yes, but the coach was not totally exhausted and the actual winner of the super bowl. as you should be able to see, in fencing, setting your touch up and executing it properly is very rewarding and can be awarded with a scream.

  • 2:49-2:57 That is a very gentlemanly way to react to defeating your opponent. What a class act that guy was :P

  • Haha I HATE fencing lefties.

  • Bloody lefties !! :D

  • @everclear21 haha indeed. .:D

  • I would have to say in my fencing experience, foil is the most difficult of the three weapons to compete in, especially if you're tall and your opponent shorter than 5'3" and weighs less than 120 lbs.

  • There's nothing worse than being in a club where there isn't a SINGLE leftie and then fighting them in competitions ;_; Confusing !

  • I just started fencing today, for the first time, and I have to say, It's a lot of fun, I really like it ^^

  • damn it flick

  • Joppich was acting like a dick throughout this tournament.

  • KarlTheStampede that may be true x other sports like baseball or hockey or NFL , but it ' s just the opposite in fencing due to its innate complexity of play movements , difficulty of judging them and inner conflicts between most powerful countries inside world federation.

Having a bad or a good judge many times marks the difference

  • can you kill somebody with those swords?

  • @TheNewRiflemanBob is that the only reason y you r watchin this video. woow

  • @TheNewRiflemanBob no they have blunrt tips

  • @RaineSageFan you can if the blade breaks and goes through, a russian was killed in the 70s that way. foil and epee are not that bad, but sabre seems to have more gruesome injuries (or at least thats the stories that i have heard from my coach, perhaps there are others hes not telling me?)

  • @TheNewRiflemanBob Technically yes, but it would be pretty difficult, since they aren't sharp or anything.

  • I dont study fencing but was wondering, Why is the grip so strange on the sword handles. is it not a conventional sword handle?

  • It's called pistol grip. It allows easier manipulation with the pinky and ring finger, the downside being that you can no longer pommel effectively (extend your reach by holding further down the handle). There are other variations, but I may have heard somewhere that at this level all competitors must use the pistol grip [Citation Needed].

  • some fencers prefer to use a more orthopaedic handle or 'pistol grip' as opposed to the traditional French grip handle :)

  • @hoban866 pistols grips have more range of movement with the wrist.

  • in foil most people now use a pistol grip because its just alot better, but not in epee or sabre. othe grips like french or italian are kinda lame.....

  • Foil is by far the most telegenic of the weapons. I know the networks only show sabre because that is the only weapon in which the USA is competitive, but in my opinion sabre is only fun to watch for an expert. Foil is beautiful, even for one unfamiliar with it.

  • This was really good. Awesome how Joppich knew Baldini was going to counter-attack again, and changed his attack to a pare riposte. The tension was just building up as the score hit 14-14. Great match!

  • who's the german guy in the first bout?

  • joppich

  • i started fencing three months ago now and i still suck but it is so much fun! strangely though this is the only thing i use my left hand for. go figure.

  • eh. foil is cool. i do epee, i think its a lot more fun. started with sabre, switched to epee and i love it.

  • Go Lefties!!

  • Yee, i just started fencing. I'm a lefty. I'm pretty sure that the righty beginners will have a tough time with me.

  • @wavewalker57 yes , left handers are always really tough fighters:D

  • @wavewalker57 YES! FEAR US!! lol

  • @ yihd

probably to teach you to keep it out of the way, or to get you into the habbit of doing so, I went thro the same thing ^-^

  • is it sudden death type of mattch ? like 1 point victory?

  • they only showed the last touch

  • No, they're just showing the highlights of each match.

  • Can someone tell me why don't these Olympic fencers have their rear arm up? My coach always forces me to have my rear arm up, then we he coaches the good fencers, he lets them have their arms down, why don't they need their arms up?

  • Simply because the good fencers are already trained to have their hand out of the way, they've completely broken the instinct to block with their free hand. Forcing new fencers to keep their off hand high and out of the way is the best way to quickly break that habit.

  • Ohh, Completely makes sense!. Thanks!

  • wen i started fencing to break my habit of using my other hand to block i would just hold on to the wire

  • @Rmasta6969 That maybe be a good way, but if the fencer becomes a comp fencer then it will be a bad habit, as it is a yellow card to hold on to your body cord, or the wire during the bout.

  • @Rmasta6969 i find that when a beginner comes to the club they always put their hand infront their target, the way i deal with it is a nice flick on the hand, sounds harsh but it works, they never do it again

  • @illnino98 What worked for me way back in the early '70s was to touch the back of my mask, the spring loaded, bent "diving board." The contact let me know that it was up where it needed to be and I just practiced at flinging it out when I lunged in practice to target. I also always thought that people who first take Eastern marshall arts classes or training before beginning in fencing have a real tendancy and problem with not using their hands and arms to parry.

  • @lew00t Good advice :)

  • @lew00t I've always had a problem with that. I've kept my hand high form the first time I ever fenced, but I still occasionally move it in front of me without even realizing it.

  • also having the back hand and movingit with the lunge forces your upper body to keep itself straight. High level fencers have the balance not to.

  • it's as my coach always said

"having a bad judge is not an excuse; just get 1-light touches"

  • hah! that is what my coach says too. =D

  • I am not saying this does not take incredible skill and reflexes. . .but damn it just does not look as cool as a sword fight should :(

  • Whenever i do a thrusting weapon i use a pistol grip. I like the control that it gives you over a french grip.

  • Pistol grip is good, the only problem though is that it's lighter in the back due to the smaller pommel than your average french hilt, and therefore requires more tip control.

  • sport looks so mild, the actual sword fighting lasts like 30sec

so anybody really can do it

  • lol sure, you could fight these guys. You would just lose every single time :P

  • i thought fencing would last longer, like in James bond or zorro

    not 30 sec matches

  • its actually 3 minutes each MATCH. but if you're talking bout rounds, yeah around there. they're not gonna stand there and well move around, they're fast, this aint some kinda movie.

  • That's true; but this is what the sport has evolved to, basically just trying to get points, doesn't matter if you yourself get in in the process, just as long as you had priority or hit first. Which, in my opinion, is a discredit to the art of fencing.

Although their speed is very impressive, it's a far cry from what fencing originally was like.

  • well... I hope you're being sarcastic, but these are just the highlights. And a match maximun time is like 9 minutes, plus a minute 30 seconds. and another 3 minutes overtime if the event arises for sudden death. And team matches go on 9x that amount. haha! They can go by faster if one of the fencers makes 15 pts before the time runs out. :P

  • It's "PRÊTS? - Allez!" - By the way: Joppich totally kicks ass, his tempo is the very best I've ever seen, and he's got a divine hand. Maybe that's why he became World Champion twice... ;-)

  • Three times :P

As well as Torino he won in 2003 in Havana and in 2007 in St Petersburg.

  • Its not On Gaurd, its En Garde

  • "Raise your guard!

    Ready?

    Go!"

  • erm wat is the command after "on guard"?

  • I think he is saying "pret" which means ready... like the movie, pret a porte, ready to wear.

  • En garde, prêt, allez...

  • i started fencin 1 year ago an im in the british youth championships

    go for it

  • ok im bout 15 and do u think its too late to start taking begining lesson?????? because im worried i'll be in a 16 yearold class and find im the only one that sux or is just startin... plz give me some advice

  • Sucking at first is all part of joining, you'll improve vastly if you just go for lessons and people should criticize you. That would be impolite and fencing is very polite. Go for it.

  • thx! for the advice... i started takin classes and its rlly fun! and actalluly they said i was pretty good! so thx!!!

  • Yeah, good. As long as you continue you'll probably do quite well. Stick with it and it will pay off. Good luck.

  • I like foil an epee; pistol grip and hav any ov u tried the new Skins? their friggin awesome.

  • woah, the italian who got

    silver is pretty fineeee

  • haha this is great i just watched saber fencing a couple of minutes ago and its damn boring. Dont get me wrong it takes skills and fast reflex in order to get the point. But its still boring. now this..i finally see some parrying and deflecting..much better!! sword manipulation...

  • oye ese video le encanto a mi hijo el entrena eso

  • fencing is pretty aosome sport

  • YES IT IS!!! I had a fencing match today, and did Sabre, Foil and Epee, but i prefer Foil

  • Nice! Hope you did well. :) I have one tomorrow.. first of the season. sabre and foil... im a bit nervous! haha

  • Hey,i hope your match went well, i still remember the match even though it was some time ago against Lancaster University. I prefer Foil because you have to work to get a point and its pretty fast. With sabre its a bit like something out of pirates of the carribean lol, and i have never liked Epee anyway, cos anywhere goes on that so its a bit more slower because it is riskier.

  • I have matches everyday like 4 or 5 matches, practice only, of 15 points each one...

And official matches like every month, it's kinda exhausting lol :P

  • The current consensus is that Baldini's drinks were spiked or otherwise modified. Additionally, the only drug present was a diuretic.

  • Shit, I was actually there to see this in person! I remember these bouts... Not surprised that Joppich won, and I'm glad too cause Baldini turned out to be dope fiend....

  • i just started fencing i have no clue what is happening. is there like a website where i can read about it or a video? please help me haha

  • do u mean that u want to watch a fencing training video?

  • yea sure

  • Wow, clearly no one commenting on this video has any real fencing experience.

"what does the "right of way" rule mean "

"i find the pistol grip the best for defense and offensive "

    haha

  • apparently you do though.

    BAHAHAHAHAHA

  • not quite

  • i have that fencing movie

  • Lol at the touch @ 2 minutes

  • lol first touch (rizzaped)

  • Baldini is the best

honestly joppicch is such a pile underneath

    superior Baldini's technic .

Once on a while you have to leave some

competitions to somebody else .... :)

  • This is so awesome....fencing is the best sport!

  • Awesome! Fencing is the best sport! I fence foil...

  • GO BALDINI!

  • what does the "right of way" rule mean

  • Its kinda complex, but basically its all to do with the extension of the arm. If a fencer is extending his arm in a threatening way he is considered to have right of way. The only ways to lose right of way is to get the hit, or if their attack is parried or falls short, this means the other fencer can riposte which gives them the right of way.

  • thanks that really helpful

  • It doesn't all have to do with the extension of the arm. its who ever initiates the attack, extending your arm helps show you are starting the attack.

  • "The attack is the initial offensive action made by extending the

arm and continuously threatening the opponent's target, preceding

the launching of the lunge or flèche (cf. t.56ss, t.75ss)."

Taken from the FIE rule book

  • Just to clarify that, priority is gained by initiating the attack yes, but the definition of initiating the attack is the extension of the arm

  • Yes, (I wasn't mad at you, it was the others) but Ive had conversations with a few people on this topic (far more experienced than I) but that rule is still not to specific, you could be extending your non-weapon arm (as a funny example).Anyways,I thought you meant priority had everything to do with the arm (i misinterpreted what you were saying),in the end I think we both agree.

  • well a flick is more often used as a counterattack or a riposte(after circ parry)rather than a straightforward attack. oh n its much harder to flick with a french grip foil. those thigns are really uncommon nowadays haha=)

  • I still respect Baldini very much even though he lost this. he just has a certain "umphh" in him.

  • very true. plus, i think joppich is a little... arrogant. But I like his parry riposte. I hope to fence him one day. Just to experience. I am going to fence in a Cat A competition soon, even though I am Junior i would still love to fence some categrory A fencers, I'll most likely be fencing Korea's Nat'l Seniors. scary fast guys

  • I personally like Baldini because he is left handed, but Joppich inevitably beats him pretty much all the time. Baldini caught up because he fixed his form and could've won but it was already to late for him to make his recovery. Baldini's balance looks off in some of his bouts, he leans his body weight forward too much, loses his centre of gravity. Hey, he is a great fencer so don't get me wrong haha.

  • totaly wikked

  • you can counter a right of way with a perry.... where you hit the other persons weapon and repost (lunge)

  • A beat attack.

  • no thats when you start the action

  • life is like a fencing bout. be prepared for anything, and react accordingly without hesitation.

  • how do they no hoo hit hoo first????

  • the swords and the inside jacket have electric sensors

  • It has very little to do with who hit who first. What the referee is looking for is what's called "Right-of-way", which, very basically, means who rightfully has offense.

  • Im only just starting and from what i've read about fencing it sounds really great.!!!!!!

  • Fencing (the best sport in the world!!)

I am a fencer.. I LOVE FENCING its the best i have been fencing for 5 years.

  • fencing foil owns!!!!!

  • WTF,

    that ONE GUY SAID

    he fenced baldini or joppich?

    are u serious?

    wow.

  • Jeeeeeeesus, that's so fast! I love fencing foil :)

  • man i love fencing almost advancing to metel swords in a bit got 1st one time

  • what does the red/white/green ovals mean when they do whatever they do...points right? just can't figure out what...

  • Yeah, basically right, they're aiming for the torso, the bit which has the silver-ish jacket over it. If a red light comes up it means the guy to our right has hit, green light means the guy to our left. A white light means they've hit, but not on the torso area, so it's either arm, leg, head or floor

  • ah, thankyou.

  • omg, i fenced that tall guy b4. i didn't stand a chance. i like italian style. too bad, flick's banned.

  • these guys are amazing! the weapon I use is a little different, mine has a french grip, I just like it better.

  • HEY!!! im new ok, and im proud of myself right now, I just got a few points on this fencer I go to school with, after he beat 2 teachers, 2 students and recently got 1st in a fencing tournament. even he was impressed, but yah I just switched to a pistol grip.

  • A french grip is great!

  • thats not true

many bouts are won with french grips

  • Stop bickering about the grips, people. It's a matter of personal preference. Personally, I use a pistol grip(Belgian, to be precise), but that was my choice.

One downside to the pistol grip is that it focuses more of the control on the wrist rather than the fingers, like a French grip. On the other hand, I think the problem people have with the French grip is that too many fencers (especially beginners) hold it like a stick and fence accordingly.

I won my first tournament with a French grip!

  • it amazex me how they do not have the "perfect" en guarde and lunge thatt hey always tell you that you need to maintain when you go to most places

  • This class of fencing is so unlike 'average' fencing, it beggars belief!

  • no wonder lei made it so far hes HUGE. wish i was taller for this sport

  • It's not a hard sport. You can improve quickly and it's a lot of fun. Anybody can be good, it's not something that you have to just have a talent for.

  • Great fencers. Truly amazing to watch. I take issue with Joppich's cockiness, but hey, he's an Olympic Gold Medalist. I started in a club that was all about honor and simply acknowledging a touch with a smile and a "good shot". So watching some fencers who will prance around the strip like they own the world after getting a point sometimes puts me off. All in all, though, these guys are amazing.

  • god peter joppichs flick at 00:36 is incredible

  • oh yeah he loves that 7 flick on lefties

  • Foil is best. Epee takes to long and saber is just whack whack whack.

    Great video.

    Peter Yoppich 3-Time World Champion

  • amen to that

  • Whats better, saber, foil or MMA???

  • isn't that kind of like asking "which is better guitar, piano, or pig wrestling"?

  • PIG WRESTLING!!!!!

  • Cool sport, but I don't like the suits.. they are gay..

  • They're for protection.

  • Yes ofcourse, I know that... But it looks gay, why can't they make something that looks nice and is good for protection

  • I honestly don't see anything wrong with em. They aren't supposed to be costumes, and they aren't supposed to be NFL uniforms either. They suit the purpose of the sport quite well. If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it, right?

  • It's just my opinion.

  • Nah, it's cool dude. :D

  • You're criticizing something for style, and you're calling IT gay? haha.

  • i think it would be cool if each country had an color uniform

  • Yup

  • I want to do this sport sooooo BAD!!

  • Why not try Kendo if you can't do this???

  • There is too a french fencer he was olympic champion when he was 180r 20 het name was something like guar.... does anybody know him and P.joppic is the best

  • Peter Joppich is me idol!!forever! :P

    I love you peterrrrr jajaja...

I from in Argentina, Buenos Aires,,,

    byee

    kiss

    DELFINA IBAÑEZ

  • Amazing this is such a graceful sport. must learn it!

  • The0Hippy, I'm not against you in any way, but I'd like to point out that you have absolutely NO right whatsoever to try and ridicule these guys' fencing. Of course, yeah, they make one or two mistakes; we all do ocassionally. But these are olympic fencers. Where are you? Certainly not fencing in the olympics. I'm sure we'd ALL lose to them very quickly, even despite them using 'too much arm motion'. (Though in my opinion, they don't.)

  • baldini is great. but yes once again, pwned by joppich. who btw, I personally find very annoying because of the way he screams when he wins.

  • its all about celebrating victory. screaming makes it all the more dramatic

  • flicking, use of wrist, use of finger and thumb, use of arm - if you score a hit, you score a hit.

    Fernando Canchez

  • but he has been OWNED by Joppich again =P

  • yes, but anyway baldini rules international ranking :PPP
