  • @Christoballs7810702 WTF? Yes this is blues! It's a 12 bar major blues with a II-V turnaround. It's called a "jazz blues". Jazz is rooted in the blues don't you know?

  • Matt, I think you feel the music in your soul, but you do not show it physically, I think you should express it physically, moving your body, making that kind of thing. Even so your music is amazing, full of feeling.

  • dude you are very woody try to move more your hands

  • @terasso Why would he want/need to move his hands more? He has almost perfect technique and great tone. You are being quite impertinent doing such statements.

  • The best jazz guitarist with his chin glued to his neck

  • great job. you have feeling(:

  • I love your feel and touch. All your guitars are beautiful but I realize your playing makes the sound, not the instrument. Thank you!

  • Nice job -- good to see an older Epiphone Joe Pass. Does it have the standard pickups on it?

  • What's not bluesy about this solo? What's not to like?

  • nice

  • beautiful

  • Excellent!

  • Sweet playing!

  • very nice playing .. like old Benson himself ! keep it up

  • always impressed matt!

  • Please tell us how you get that sound Idon't think it is an amp I love the tone you get with the Preeless guitars, please it is just wonderful thanks BB

  • Best piece of music I've heard in days!

  • good job!! (Y)

  • Sounds great - as always. Where can I find the C Blues progression for piano.

My former piano teacher gave me changes for C Minor Blues, years ago,

but couldn't do a lot with it. Lacking in the improv skills and facility or finger action.

  • I think you need a lot of heart to play jazz and classical guitar.

  • Wow!

    Great soloing and awesome phrasing.

  • i have no idea how to play like that

  • Awesome how a guy plays a guitar that was knocked so bad on YT by John(Johnhguitar) as a bad gibson.........a 6 or $700. instrument that to me, you would not know the tone from a guitar costing a whole lot more!.........Oh Well; I guess us poor guys are just going to suffer with playing junkers..... .KEEPON STRUMMIN.....Dallas

  • It isn't the guitar it's the player.

  • great!!!

  • At first glance I think it's at 0.14 and 2.00. He might not do it every time though.

    It would be brilliant if

Matt himself coughed up on this! He has posted here before.

  • Hey matt, great playing it just swings so well. What chords are you using? It's more than three chord trick!

  • If you're asking for the basic form of what he's playing, look up the basic "jazz blues chord progression". Applied to this, it would probably be something like C7 / F7 / C7 / Gmin7 C7 / F7 / F#dim7 / C7 / A7 / Dmin7 / G7 / C7 F7 / C7 A7 / Dmin7 G7

  • It's okay, I know, with a C7alt before the 4th bar. But he plays Em7/Ebm arps at least twice I think. That's what threw me, although Em is fine over A7. I have seen a version somewhere with Em7/Ebm7 in it. What do you think?

  • Can you point out at what time in the video he plays the arpeggios?

  • It's amazing how much you can do with three chords. The blues is the easiest and most comon chord progression around but it still sounds fresh and new when Mr Otten plays it.

  • Nice and interesting but where are the bendings

  • they're very rare in jazz guitar

  • they shouldn't be rare

  • that bass makes it work.

  • six stars just awesome. I like this blues much better than the slow blues in G. This really swings and I guess i've heard to many players solo's over like 1/4/5 stormy monday stuff. Thanks for a great vid.

  • lovely played i also like the walking bass its cool!

  • great playing

  • It Great, i agree with GR8XKP can't stop listerning to it

  • this is jazz

  • I make my living playing the guitar and piano you have the sound I have always tried to achieve. You have taste as well as one of the greatest tones I've ever heard in jazz guitar. Many thanks

  • Thanks Matt! I bought your albums!

  • Does what you call it make it sound any different?...who cares what it's called...it's some of the sweetest guitar playing i've ever heard...bar none

  • agree

  • very nice geat tone.thankyou

  • awesome =O very nice playing, keep on rocking ;)

  • Very niiice!! I love it

  • Sorry, but this isn't the blues, this is pure jazz.

  • this is a 12 bar blues in jazz style, as opposed to rock blues, or delta blues..or Gary Moore blues..but it is blues..

  • "I've been memorizing genres for over six years"

hey, look at this guy :) Way to go.

  • I was merely making note of my expertise on the matter. Seeing as this is the best effort you can make at reaching me on an insulting level, I would assume that you wouldn't know what I'm talking about, and should therefore proceed to fornicate yourself. Thanks.

  • Oops, didn't mean to insult you. It just sounded so fun when I picked it out from it's content. You have quite a big advance since you are insulting on your mother tongue. English is my third languange so pardon me for my poor skills.

  • "should therefore proceed to fornicate yourself" And this is your best effort :) why didn't you just say go fuck yourself? that's a ludicrous effort. But my point was not to, in any way harm you. I apologize for that. But you seeme to be a bit tight, loosen up. This will probably make you more angry but I do not hope so. I mean it. Well anyway, watched your videos. They are nice, you are a bit elitistic tho' "This was like 2 years ago, though. I sound a lot better now" Take care!

  • yes, it's jazz: it's what jazz musicians would call 'blues in C', because of the 12 bar blues form in the key of C

  • That's more like it. I'm not as much of a jazz guitarist as I am just an all-around guitarist. I play in a "jazz ensemble" but we hardly ever play real JAZZ as much as swing/latin/blues and everything in between.

  • if you check out my 'slow blues in G' video, you'll see that it's much closer to 'real' blues, but still jazz (i think)

  • Matt first off you are a incredible player!

The foundation was built of blues. A Typical blues does constitute 1/4/5 of any scale. I thought it was interesting that the poster Christoballs would say" he's been memorizing Genres for over six years" but then Plays in a "Jazz Ensemble" but doesn't play Jazz. Not to be rude but if you take a chance to memorize the history of Jazz and Blues you will find a amazing connection and foundation.

Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green to start.

  • @mattotten Must Be A Gibson Les Paul you're playing! Ever Played A Gibson B. B. King Lucille or a Standard Gibson Les Paul? And that's some good blues jazz there! You could be on Capitol Records or Atlantic Records or Epic Records or Columbia Records or some other major record label!

  • @Christoballs7810702 if u're not reconizing a blues line here i think you'd better stop music =)

  • @o0tortue0o, I assure you I'm a talented and weathered musician. Blues is one of my specialties, and it takes a keen ear for music to recognize certain things. If you are unable to recognize any blues in this, you should probably consider taking college music theory and history classes before speaking up in a youtube forum - as I have.

  • @Christoballs7810702 stupid..

  • hey men thats totaly jazz, maybe u use like pentatonic patterns but the sound is 100%jazz......really smoth brother keep on the good work

  • Very nice job! Awesome

  • awsome...

  • Very Good, Like Jazz to, Its Jazzyblues ;) Like that, Oh yeah

  • Perfect jazz attitude. Flat, cool, understated. A great sound.

  • bonne musique pour le festival de jazz de Montreal !!! bravo.

  • Bravo! You make it look so effortless. To me this is just as expressive if not more so than say Stevie Ray Vaghn playing straight blues. Not that either blues or jazz is better just different. peace

  • fuckin hell how class a bit more passion when playing n you'll be well away

  • classsssssssssssssss

  • well done

  • velly good player

  • It might well be the magician rather than the wand, but the best magician in the world can't do much with a bent stick! The guitar has to make a difference. A good instrumrnt makes you WANT to play and helps you learn faster. Nice easy Jazz Blues Matt

  • Kinda sounds like a Joe Pass song..nice.

  • just Beautiful. Matt you should record a Blues Album.

  • Love it, mate! 5/5

  • Really enjoyed it, thanks. Does anyone know where I can obtain some great blues or jazz blues backing tracks from?

  • Very nice but it's Jazz not Blues in my opinion. Anyway 5/5

  • its a Jazz blues it is still based around a blues progression

  • Gorgeous!

  • uh.... make that Elferink. I don't know what I was thinking writing Excalibur.

  • It's an Epiphone Joe Pass.

  • I believe Matt uses Excalibur guitars.

  • nice!

  • Looks like an Epiphone Joe Pass model. Matt can make it sound like a DeAngelico. Just more proof that it's the magician, not the wand.

  • Dont get much better than this!!

  • Hi what guitar use please?

  • jazz's on the way baybee!!!

  • silly me

  • good, but sounds jazzy not bluesy

  • thats how a jazz blues works my friend!

  • you can really create emotion with your music.. its very inspiring.
