Live shiner is the bait of choice, however they will strike at a lure if they think it's after their young. My son snagged one on the top of its head! My favorite lure is the Rapala X-Rap Sure Set 08 in the Moss Back Shiner color. Have not had much luck with the Gold. I work the lure hard and fast... a local guide told me you can't reel it in fast enough. The key, I think, is to make them think the lure is going after their offspring, so reel in fast while jerking the rod.
Too bad you couldn't land a peacock bass during your trip to Miami. They are a blast to catch and yes, they are very aggressive. They have bent my treble hooks on more than one occasion. They can be found in practically any Miami canal and are most active between the beginning of spring and end of summer. They like it hot, so 10am to 4pm is prime time, although they can bite at any time. They spawn/nest between April and September and they get mad when you mess with their young.
