The battery production of the prius is sooo not carbon neutral. Green buyers should definitely buy a prius. Economical maybe, but not green. Get a BMW deisel, it'll be better for the environment in the long run. Your average prius owner doesn't drive enough to offset the carbon emissions used to produce just the battery.
50mpg is a joke. The VW Blue-motion engine does 75mpg and over 80mpg in an urban environment or VW's '1-litre car' which managed 285mpg. I truely believe that everyone needs to do all they can to push companies to produce electric vehicles but buying half-assed hybrid vehicles that do more damage than non-electric but highly efficient desiels is the wrong way to go about it.
Personally I think the hybrid car is retarded. It's just a stupid compromise that makes little sense. It still uses petrol, and petrol is the thing we need to get rid of fast. Now there's a ton of alternate fuels that a combustion engine can run on that dont affect the environment. Hydrogen, Cooking oil or Ethanol for example. all proven to work perfectly and require little to no modifications to a car at all.
I say that if all the cars on the road produce half the regular amount of c02 emission is just as good as half the cars on the road with no c02 emissions. But your right, we need to forget about gas for good and move on to another brick in the wall, electricity efficiency.
Really? Because I could have sworn they were better for the environment than gas cars. Why don't you just get into your hummer and go try to park somewhere, Your comment is completely improper on this type of video.
ok ill actually get in my hummer and drive to buy more hummers so i can sit them there and let them run. and you stop being a hippie. hybrids are actually more money
Hybrids are either evenly priced with other cars in their class or cheaper (than some higher end models). Also they don't chug gas constantly so you have to refuel less. They actually are cheaper than other cars if you factor in a couple years of filling up at the pump. Even more so for electric cars because you never have to fill them up. Lastly, go be ignorant somewhere else, or at least get your facts straight before getting into an argument.
In what way? The fact they are cleaner? Cheaper to run and maintain, the fact they kick the arse off most other cars because electric engines are 95% efficient while combustion engines are 30% efficient at best?

I have a friend who had two huge gas guzzling trucks. (He needs one to tow a trailer for motorcycle racing).
One day he got completely pissed off at gas prices and impulse bought a Prius. Right after he bought, gas prices collapsed. So he felt a little dumb.
But the thing is, the prius turned out to be a much better car than he or I thought... It's pretty comfortable and awesome inside. He loves driving it. So, not so much regret after all.
i have 1 word to say to you. global cooling. scientists have been saying it for a couple years now, but the liberal media wont allow that kind of talk. so they are silenced. and if you havent noticed, this has been the coolest julys in history. coincidence? i think not. before you come to me saying in a couple years we will all be dead because it will be to hot, look up what your talking about. now go crawl back in your liberal hole.
so your saying global WARMING causes global COOLING?
you are as dumb as you sound.
by the way, "the day after tomorrow" is a good movie yes, but it is not based on scientific fact. storms like that wont happen that quickly nor will they ever. theres no solid ground to prove that, or on the other hand, prove global warming will do anything. how do you prove we will all die because of it? U CANT!!
take your stupid liberal shit and go back to your closet and listen to mpr. (which sucks)
it can cause cooling because it melts all the ice and then all that cold water can go into the warm water and then the warm water is gone. storms will not happen that quickly ur right on that. if the earth gets too hot we have less water less food because crops wont grow shit head! if its too hot people will die. in 2005 (being 1 of the hottest years we have had) people died because of the heat. bitch
2. if the earth gets to hot, it will stimulate plant growth causing more crops than we have ever seen. it will become very humid, so therefore more water.
3. 2005 was one of the hottest years yes. but the majority of people who died were obese, and or they were athletes who didnt drink enough water.
and if you havent noticed, it has been getting cooler.
so you and your liberal agenda can go fuck yourself. i hate people like you
the ice would melt before it even starts to get cold again. and it could get colder which means ice age. so some plants will grow more because of the tropical weather but what will happen when it passes that tropical weather? way too hot!
yah its been getting cooler. it doesnt mean its gonna stay that way and its getting cooler because of a hurricane called el nino happening somewhere right now.(which is also caused by global warming) no i hate people like you that that will get us killed.
everything you just said, is not true. and i might add that nothing you said made any sense if you take a step back and look at it.
my point is this: the earth has always gone through warm, and cool periods. the medieval age was close to a mini ice age. but a couple hundred years ago, it started getting warmer. now its getting cooler again. its all a freakin cycle. idk why all you liberals have to get so worked up over a cycle. let the whole global warming thing go man, its a lie. ITS A CYCLE.
just because its cooling down for a couple of weeks u think its a cycle!? in the medieval age we didnt have cars or big factories that released large amounts of CO2 which is why it was not as hot. look around, u dont think all the smoke from cars, factories and many things are not bad for us or the earth? if u dont care 4 global warming then y dont u care 4 wild life. birds that have 2 fly in polluted air. sea life that dies from dirty water and trash! deforestation!
Look, I know there is a global heating and cooling cycle but go to google and search up "hole in the ozone layer". That is thanks to humankind. Our CO2 emissions are also causing the highest global temperatures in history (watch "An Inconvenient Truth" and you'll see what I'm talking about). This is melting our ice caps while creating violent weather and flooding. Lastly, post your reference. I want to see where your facts come from.
I own a Prius. A low end model that I bought off the lot for $24.5 out the door with an extended warranty. The only problem I had is people thought I was a Gore supporter as soon as they saw me in it. Conservatives can conserve gas as well, should have been my response.
Nobody will be able to buy a Prius or any other car, if Cap and Trade happens.

I actually prefer his style of speaking. Too many people on YouTube ramble for 10 minutes without saying a dang thing. At least this dude gets to the point.
We do need to use less fuel because there is not an unlimited supply. It will eventually become much harder to find and lots more expenive. I am all for neuclear plants and electric cars but not to save the earth. What humans produce is a very small portion and sun activity is clearly the driving force in warming. We are in a natural warming cycle. We must adjust because we can not stop it. The advantage to electric is to save resources and it would keep local environment cleaner and quiter.
well what would the prius be an eventual stepping sone towards? eventully what do you personally hope/expect in the future if more money goes into green cars?
lol..what prius owners dont understand, is that all hybrid engines contain nickle, therefore, sure your giving off less gas, but the nickle from your engine will never cease to contaminate the land it is in, in other words doing more harm to the earth than a normal running car can do in 1000 years.
if you are worried about the nickel contaminating the actual land it is in wouldn't it be better to mine it for the engines? perhaps I'm misunderstanding you
oh no, nickle in its natural setting is no harm at all, it is when it is used for running a machine and eventually put in a landfill that it becomes harmful, because it can never decompose.
These videos on Prius's and such are really interesting BUT I am not buying a car any day soon yet I want to know how I as an individual can help the environment on a smaller scale
Really? My experience with the Prius on long drives has been very different. Seattle to Sacramento, 43 MPG highway. Comfortable, cheap. Maybe it's just me.
I'm ever so slightly disappointed in the new Prius 3.0, and this from someone who has been a longtime owner of a Prius 1.0. Sure, it has a solar panel option, but that doesn't put any juice into the hybrid batteries, it just runs some climate control features. Second, the nicer two of the four bases they have, the ones I would want because they have this solar panel option, only come with leather interiors, which somewhat goes against the vegetarian nature of my household. Argh.
I'm going to get my license until they invent a car that's actually good for the environment. (Luckily I live in europe where I can take public transport anywhere I need to go to)
Spectacular thanks for this vid.... though I personally wont be able to afford a new car anytime soon and mine is pretty crappy all around. That's used cars for ya.
Thanks for the information, Hank, and thanks for mentioning fuel-efficient used cars as an option. Considering the environmental impact of all the materials that go into building even a small car, this is an alternative to consider. I drive an eight-year-old Civic that gets about 32 MPG, and I'm holding out for the efficiency improvements to come.
Another ? would be, Is either car manufactured in an eco friendly way? What good is a "green" car, if it destroys the environment during manufacturing? I think the entire chain (manufacture-car life-end of life disposal) needs to be examined when making this choice as well.
There is a dealer just done the road from my house who sells electric cars and I was thinking today about selling my Ford Focus and taking on the payments of one of those, but you made some really good points! I'd like to wait for better cars, but will I be able to afford those when they come out? Probably not. I will have to wait for the trickle down effect.
Hank explained it in another video, but basically, he thinks that solar panels on the roof of cars are rather inefficient and unpractical. It would make much more sense to put the panels on your house roof, where they would generate more watts per foot for way less cost, and then transfer the electricity into your car with a plug.
question hank and you seem to be on top of all this--why do they advertise the insight as the hybrid under 14k but on honda's website it starts at over 19k?
I'm loving these videos Hank. You're answering a lot of questions.
What about other vehicles? Like scooters? I've been looking into them and all my research has turned up zilch, and I don't exactly trust the dealers to give it to me straight...
Green Diesel engines have Catalyzed regenerative particulate filters so the produce very little particulate matter. The VW Jetta Diesel for example gets 40MPG and has lower emissions then a gas burning Jetta.
Wow, I love these videos, they amke me feel like I can help the planet when in reality I'm not doing much, Except walkign everywhere mostly becuase I have no license, and Ilove walking. Keep up the great videos. ^-^
Ecogeek should be a show on Planet Green. At least a news segment. Preferably a new show. Because that would be so jokes. You could be like the Bill Nye of green technology...well, yeah, he has his own show...but you could be...the second Bill Nye. Or the Alton Brown of green technology. That would be rad.
I don't really agree with you. Although I like the intro to the vlogbrothers' videos, I think it would hinder this show's character by giving it too much superfluous stuffing. As well, I think the two shows are about even in standing, although I do miss the punishments endured by the boys when they were still of the original Brotherhood.
I'm surprised you mentioned the Honda Insight without the scathing review of it by Jeremy Clarkson (of Top Gear): "Its terrible. Biblically terrible. Possibly the worst new car money can buy. Its the first car Ive ever considered crashing into a tree, on purpose, so I didnt have to drive it any more."
According to him the Prius handles MUCH better and is less noticeable with its switching from EV to gas.
Hey Hank. I love the EcoGeek videos. Keep them coming. As someone highly interested in green technology but that gets slightly scared by long technical words, I must say I love getting my EcoGeek knowledge delivered in pretty video form. Great step forward for the site! :D
Hank, I can wait a couple of years to buy a new car but why should I? In a couple of years wont you be saying the same thing? All my life it seems once I decide to buy top of the line new technology about two months later I see something new and better come along. Can you do another video telling me what I will be waiting for, if I decide to wait? I need to know if I should wait two years since my car is a 97 Ford Taurus, soon I will be able to afford a new car, and I want to go green.
1. Your reading my comment 2. Now your saying/thinking thats a stupid fact. 4. You didnt notice that i skipped 3. 5. Your checking it now. 6. Your smiling. 7. Your still reading my comment. 8. You know all you have read is true. 10. You didn't notice that i skipped 9. 11. Your checking it now. 12. You didn't notice there are only 10 facts Copy and paste to 1 video, tomorrow will be your best day ever! no matter what!
Youtube ate my comment on this channel, but basically it said I am one of those people who will be waiting a couple of years to buy a new car and hope that you'll still be around on this channel to give me some insight on the best car for me and for the environment ^_^
I think you're missing a very important point here: How much energy and what resources are used for the production of these two cars?
If I recall correctly, about 20 years ago something like 40,000 kWh (!) were needed for the production of a Ford Taurus. I'd guess that you need much more for a modern high-tech car. For example, a lot of energy is needed for the production of solar cells, and rare metals (like indium) are necessary. I'd really like to see some actual numbers here.
Good question! I'd like to see that as well. I know Subaru is doing a lot toward greening their production, though their gas mileage isn't all that great. I look forward to more of these videos comparing other vehicles, too, like the Honda Fit, for example. Go EcoGeek!
The Solar panels are only for the climate control system, not for the engine. So, when it's hot and sunny, the solar panels will help keep the car cool. If it rains, you don't need them - but at any rate, the solar panels store energy in batteries, which also work in the rain. Does that help?
okay so i'd like some advice. 16 years old, would really like a hybrid car, not so able put up all of the the money...how do i convince my parents to help me buy a hybrid? Hank you are awesome by the way!
Get a efficient beater (old car) and wait it out for three years. (SAVE MONEY)
If you're doing it for the cool factor. Fitting your ride to use hydrogen to boost fuel efficiency will do the job. TRUST ME. My friend did it and not only are people on campus talking about it, but a professor gave him a teachers manual for the calculus classes in exchange for help fitting his car with it.
plus your parents will be very proud of you and will be more likely to help you get that EV later.
int it funny how things that are good for you or the environment tend to cost waaaayyyyyy more than the stuff that's bad? hybrids or organic its gonna cost a nice shiny nickel!
This is often a fallacy...the greenest thing you can do is buy efficiency used vehicles, which are often extremely cheap...or walk, bike or bus around, which are also the cheapest ways to move from point A to point B.
As for organic produce, farmer's markets are often far cheaper than grocery store prices...and local food is fantastic for the environment
I cant wait until i finish college because when i start designing cars, the cars that are good for the environment will be the cars that people want because they will look more appealing.
a well thought out video, though i firmly beleive that the toyota hybrids will forever be the top dog, as toyota has a history of building excellent vehicles, where as honda makes moeny wise vehicles... my 2009 corolla cost me 24,000. as long as toyota makes vehicles, i will be with them... cause they are reliable.
I don't think Toyota will forever be Top Dog. They're lagging on plug-in technology, and if extended-range EVs pan out...Toyota will be several steps behind some other car companies.
true, although as the EREV's actually work the way that they are hypothesised to, i beleive that Toyota will work on developing a similar or better working system, although i must say, honda is getting themoney to start competing with toyota in the research department, so i could be totally off... :)

why pay anything for ugly cars? the environment isn't in any trouble anyway. if it were, we'd already be dead. nature will survive mankind, and vice versa.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah, i know. the truth of this pointless environmental craze hurts. it's all a scam/hoax. i watch you guys because you're funny and interesting, but this stuff is completely ridiculous.
How are you still thinking this? Your opinions are outdated by about three years. It's like you're still insisting the world is flat after columbus sailed around it. I can't comprehend this kind of head-in-the-sand ignorance you're displaying.
and anyway, why did you reply to their comment as if they were supporting you? their comment was obviously pointing out the outrageous amounts of stupidity in your comment.
yeah, it's important. for example, both Fox News and Alex Jones create false debate or outright deny the science of climate change. by doing so it gives people the false belief that the jury is still out on the topic, that belief leads to inaction. dont' you think that's pretty serious?
... I dunno if you're playing with me or what, but I'm guessing you didn't get the joke. I was trying to point out the lack of a verb in your statement by referencing a long-unfunny meme. ;)
Hank, is there anything like a "green" mini-van on the horizon? we are a family of 5 + dog, and cars just don't hack it for us. I would really like to be green, but I love my caravan.
Might I suggest that instead of turning away from the camera as soon as you say ecogeek. That you just look into the camera for a second. I just don't think it looks very good when a video ends mid-turn. :)
I saw a special that explained that to make the batteries for the things was way worse for the environment than any regular car. The mining of the nickle cause acid rain, plus the engergy to mine it, then the gas to transport the nickle to several countries for refinement, and being made into a battery.
takes about an hour to edit the cuts...a little more to do the greenscreeny stuff. But, yeah, jumpcuts are just how I've always done it. Keeps the pace up, makes the video shorter, and it's easier to film.
I have a kia rio. I thought OHH economy car cause it is so small UM NO. 2007 kia rio, I have had to replace electrical system cause the lo jack shorted it out, the car couldnt handle it. Had to have a new head put on and just had the transmission rebuilt. Cheaper isnt always econmical. I should of went with a civic.
What is a good car that isnt a "green car" cause I mean even 28K is alot for me to spend on a car.
Well the Insight looks better, but I kind of want a Prius. BUT, I do also want a Cviic hybrid. I am a fan of Honda.
However, the car that I feel I have to have is the Aptera. It's an amazing electric car. It probably has it's problems, but it seems like they did a good job.
I'm not going to get a car at all right now, sticking to puclic transportation. But that has more to do with my inability to get the drivers licence and less to do with the car. :P

heygirlhey223 2 years ago
if you are worried about the nickel contaminating the actual land it is in wouldn't it be better to mine it for the engines? perhaps I'm misunderstanding you
JaymeJennings 2 years ago
oh no, nickle in its natural setting is no harm at all, it is when it is used for running a machine and eventually put in a landfill that it becomes harmful, because it can never decompose.
heygirlhey223 2 years ago
well it can be recycled no?
JaymeJennings 2 years ago
as far as i know, no technology has been modified to recycle nickle, no.

These videos on Prius's and such are really interesting BUT I am not buying a car any day soon yet I want to know how I as an individual can help the environment on a smaller scale

I did 300 miles in a Prius once, it wasn't an enjoyable drive with poor mpg. Honda probably just as bad. Diesel far better economy.

Argh.

Why don't you want solar panels?
shaylaluna 2 years ago
Hank explained it in another video, but basically, he thinks that solar panels on the roof of cars are rather inefficient and unpractical. It would make much more sense to put the panels on your house roof, where they would generate more watts per foot for way less cost, and then transfer the electricity into your car with a plug.

Green Diesel??? Can you say particulate matter.
01rrrdddrrrddd 2 years ago
Green Diesel engines have Catalyzed regenerative particulate filters so the produce very little particulate matter. The VW Jetta Diesel for example gets 40MPG and has lower emissions then a gas burning Jetta.

Yeah, you need to come-up with an Ecogeek theme song!
Have you ever heard of the Intercharger? It's a device that attaches to any car engine and is supposed to make it cleaner and more efficient.
mldnathai 2 years ago
I don't really agree with you. Although I like the intro to the vlogbrothers' videos, I think it would hinder this show's character by giving it too much superfluous stuffing. As well, I think the two shows are about even in standing, although I do miss the punishments endured by the boys when they were still of the original Brotherhood.
redheadedbabydoll17 2 years ago
I'm surprised you mentioned the Honda Insight without the scathing review of it by Jeremy Clarkson (of Top Gear): "Its terrible. Biblically terrible. Possibly the worst new car money can buy. Its the first car Ive ever considered crashing into a tree, on purpose, so I didnt have to drive it any more."
According to him the Prius handles MUCH better and is less noticeable with its switching from EV to gas.

IdaRuda 2 years ago
I think you're missing a very important point here: How much energy and what resources are used for the production of these two cars?
If I recall correctly, about 20 years ago something like 40,000 kWh (!) were needed for the production of a Ford Taurus. I'd guess that you need much more for a modern high-tech car. For example, a lot of energy is needed for the production of solar cells, and rare metals (like indium) are necessary. I'd really like to see some actual numbers here.
RubberDiBung 2 years ago
Good question! I'd like to see that as well. I know Subaru is doing a lot toward greening their production, though their gas mileage isn't all that great. I look forward to more of these videos comparing other vehicles, too, like the Honda Fit, for example. Go EcoGeek!

thnk you for this information hank. it was very helpfull. but solor pannels scare me. what do you do if it rains??
Colormehappy21 2 years ago
Pray
FatFuckingPrick 2 years ago
The Solar panels are only for the climate control system, not for the engine. So, when it's hot and sunny, the solar panels will help keep the car cool. If it rains, you don't need them - but at any rate, the solar panels store energy in batteries, which also work in the rain. Does that help?

okay so i'd like some advice. 16 years old, would really like a hybrid car, not so able put up all of the the money...how do i convince my parents to help me buy a hybrid? Hank you are awesome by the way!
radishesandpudding 2 years ago
don't.
Get a efficient beater (old car) and wait it out for three years. (SAVE MONEY)
If you're doing it for the cool factor. Fitting your ride to use hydrogen to boost fuel efficiency will do the job. TRUST ME. My friend did it and not only are people on campus talking about it, but a professor gave him a teachers manual for the calculus classes in exchange for help fitting his car with it.
plus your parents will be very proud of you and will be more likely to help you get that EV later.

sangryfilms 2 years ago
Because the technology and materials to make the stuff that's good costs waaaayyyyyy more than the stuff that's bad.
shadowslave4 2 years ago
This is often a fallacy...the greenest thing you can do is buy efficiency used vehicles, which are often extremely cheap...or walk, bike or bus around, which are also the cheapest ways to move from point A to point B.
As for organic produce, farmer's markets are often far cheaper than grocery store prices...and local food is fantastic for the environment
vlogbrothers 2 years ago
I cant wait until i finish college because when i start designing cars, the cars that are good for the environment will be the cars that people want because they will look more appealing.
UniversalAsylum 2 years ago
a well thought out video, though i firmly beleive that the toyota hybrids will forever be the top dog, as toyota has a history of building excellent vehicles, where as honda makes moeny wise vehicles... my 2009 corolla cost me 24,000. as long as toyota makes vehicles, i will be with them... cause they are reliable.
pyro5050 2 years ago
I don't think Toyota will forever be Top Dog. They're lagging on plug-in technology, and if extended-range EVs pan out...Toyota will be several steps behind some other car companies.
vlogbrothers 2 years ago
true, although as the EREV's actually work the way that they are hypothesised to, i beleive that Toyota will work on developing a similar or better working system, although i must say, honda is getting themoney to start competing with toyota in the research department, so i could be totally off... :)

katesmeow 2 years ago
yeah, it's important. for example, both Fox News and Alex Jones create false debate or outright deny the science of climate change. by doing so it gives people the false belief that the jury is still out on the topic, that belief leads to inaction. dont' you think that's pretty serious?

I saw a special that explained that to make the batteries for the things was way worse for the environment than any regular car. The mining of the nickle cause acid rain, plus the engergy to mine it, then the gas to transport the nickle to several countries for refinement, and being made into a battery.
