This song, just like 'Diggin the Dirt' has a deeper meaning. This one is about our sexual urge to find 'love' and start a family, which is basically ingrained (programmed) code in our DNA which can lead us to a trap of family life, mundane living, where time and soul are swallowed by routine and daily grind, and there's no actual Love, just feeding.
'Lovetown' is a place we think we want to be in, but in fact it is also a trap. 'Have you got what you want?' - he asks. 'Take a good look around.'
@BadResistors Very good observation ...people just go with the flow, they go to school, get married, get a job, have kids ...and so on.I've though A LOT about that, and we either develop a greater consciouness and liberate from all attachments or we better follow the mainstream guidelines. Without enlightment is absurd that we don't find a partner, or enjoy the sublime pleasure of sharing our lives with our own kids that at the same time will help us get through when we grow old.
@BadResistors Also, I think the big trap is in ourselves and in our own minds. The surroundings are just the inevitable landscape we are restricted as flesh and bones beings. THe real liberation comes from deep within. Family, wives, sons, daughters, family, friends, nations, neighbouhoods, streets, trees, houses, etc. are just external circumstances that we could approach in different ways. Our saviour is not in the landscape, is inside all of us. We just have to dig deeper and deeper.
It´s one of his very best songs, no matter, how successful it was! This very special, controled sound and this unbelievable way of instrumentatation... Great artist, always stay my favorite, for shure!
What's really important here, is the bass line, played with that strange and fantastic Ashbory bass, wich is very tiny and small, but providing huge and great bass sound, as you can all hear it. That's why this song sounds so particular, in my point of view.
This is the only "pop" song I've ever heard that Miles Davis could have covered without changing a thing. The vocal is on par with a jazz solo and the groove is nothin' but coool. If Miles had been alive when this was released, I'm sure he would have been impressed and probably payed it. That's a great compliment to PG
The artist Peter Gabriel collaborated with for this video is Yayoi Kusama, provocative japanese painter

The song- solid gold. The video - not so good. I wonder if the animation was done by the same guy who did Big Time and Steam videos.

Excellent song. One of the few songs released on a major labor featuring an Ashbory bass.

How strange that such a superb music video and song did not become more famous. I don't understand.

I agree. Peter Gabriel has always been an under-appreciated artist.

think this song is about searching for love and finding malice, the polka dots remind me of karposi's sarcoma. Very chilling and sad.

Peter's actually a big fan of Springsteen, and was heavily influenced by one of his live performances.
I do think Brucie deserved it though, that song really hits a nerve
