When I was 16, in Mammoth Springs, Arkansas, a group came to the small village of 1000 and played in an old store building (1969), different name, but same "young" men with long hair and loud music. It was an awesome experience. It wasn't long thereafter that they got a recording contract and did "Lawd have mercy on my soul!"
Yeah this guy has got to be close to 70 and he still rocks and struts like the rock god he is. Just saw them last night and what a show!weight? Go watch kenny chesney vids if jim dandy don't suit u!
Yes indeed, the finest thing to come out of Arkansas besides me! It doesn't matter how old they are, they can still rock your socks off. And Ruby Starr (Ruby Jones when I met her) is one one the most awesome voices ever recorded.
I think you missed my point.... I said nothing about 'Ruby Starr'....Grand Funk Had 12 singles in the hot 100 ,4 in the top ten and a #1 They are remembered for selling out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles and 12 gold albums among other things. Black Oak had a huge fan base from constantly touring. After "Jim Dandy" was a hit the next L.P only sold half as much as did their last 6 albums ,Each selling worse then it's predecessor. I LOVE every Black Oak Arkansas album. B.O.A.-Ever!!!!!
His name is Ricky Lee Reynolds Aka Ricochet He was the main songwriter although the whole band got most of the credit.. This song was their downfall .Nice to get a hit single but they lost most of their fans because of it.. It sucks that this is their claim to fame and not the 14 or so great albums they made.
Aw, give 'em a break. They did this song even BEFORE Ruby Starr. But, the Ruby version put them on the radio again, BIGTIME. I'm sure that a lot of people discovered BOA just because of this song.
Hey, just by listening to "Classics", one would think that "Locomotion" was a great Grand Funk tune also.

Thissong is no good without Ruby Starr.Big Jim mangrum used to get all the good putang with that Louisville slugger in his pants, now he is gay and the only girls who want sex from him are fat Drunkin Hogs like the group on stage in this video pounding the stage into the ground.
LOL!!!!!stop it!!! LOLOL - do you mind if i quote you? you made me pee my pants!! there is only one jim mangrum thanks jesus! he made all of us what we are today!!! thanxjimdandy!
Roth was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Mangrum busted his butt for every dollar he made. Now tell me...who is the hardest working frontman in the history of rock & roll?! DLR, takes notes...
Is this the same guy who used to strut around stage like a peacock in his tight white pantsuit, in the '70s? What year is this video from? Thanks for posting. (They were so ahead of their time!)
David Lee Roth would have no musical career without having understudied Jim "Dandy" Mangrum. DLR will tell you up front he used to film BOA and JD at the Whiskey in LA (With JD's approval). VH should pay residuals to JD for the use of his likeness on stage! :)
Having said that, Couldn't help but notic the poundage bouncing around the stage. I guess the groupies hit the wall as fast as J "D" M did. Seems like a lifetime ago when The Know body else played. I was 4 then but didn't really know about BOA until I was 12 when Tommy joined the band and Raunch & Roll came out. I have all their stuff but growing up in PA I never got to see them live. Time is running out. Its on the Bucket list.
Venomhed, LOL, I can honestly say that I have. We'd go down to the lake, throw out a few bales of hay and light the party fire. We'd get drunk, snuggle up to a sweet thang and we'd hollar " Crank Up The BOA"! By the time "Lord Have Mercy On My Soul" rolled around we'd be in the bush diggin' in the bush. I happen to have met Jim Mangrum and co, It's all like one big family down here, It's a Arkansas Thang. Come visit us, we like IDIOTS down here!
what a hideous display of humanity.. ohh the floppy flesh and pitted skin.. the hairy moles and stenches that must be coming out of those women.. as this faust of wasted and clung to sexuality prances in a digusting display of wanton sexuality.. Jim Dandy kicks ass
Venomhed, my friend, you need to be schooled on the finer elements of rock and roll! Check out a few more BOA vids, ry to find a date and when that moment of clarity overtakes you.....THEN post a comment. Untill then, keep your ignorant fingers off the keyboard!!
Very few people were "hip" to BOA because we were all dupped into thinking that Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and other commercial groups were all there was to listen to. But the intelligent rockers out there knew better!! Rock on, BOA!! R.I.P. Miss Ruby Starr...
Met the guys at Sweden Rock Festival and they really rocked BIGTIME! Thanxxx for being such wonderful fellas as well guys, specially Johnny and Dr Bassman!

I third that emotion. Funny how both JDM and DLR aren't what you'd call "gifted" vocalists, but they both have that intangible stage presence.
