  • is there a album of this concert?

  • 25 people have serious problems

  • Its not really technically a jam session per se, cause there isn't much improv goin on...but these guys are still my favorite living musicians

  • Is Flea wearing a t-shirt?!

  • john contributed to all mars volta records. and john has been on some of rodriguez lopez's solo albums as well.

  • These guys fucking rock.

My two favorite guitarists and favorite bassist.

  • this is actually the group that recorded on deloused in the contorarium or how ever its spelled

  • Comment removed

  • my girlfriend would say. ¡AGUANTE JOHN! ¡AGUANTE OMAR! ¡AGUANTE FLEA! ¡AGUANTE ANTHONY! ¡AGUANTE JOSH! ¡AGUANTE CHAD! ¡AGUANTE R H C P! ¡VIVA LA PUTA MÚSICA!

And if you say "this sucks"... please do exactly the same movement, feel the same, rock the same as they can do it... then you will be "someone" to say "this sucks".

  • i just wish fucking john frusciante joined mars volta already

  • Comment removed

  • This sounds sooooo RHCP mixed with Mars Volta! How amazing! The 2 bands who are forever painted on my skin! Next to each other.

  • Flea is a machine.. And this video is rad, seeing John with strong chops again.. That would be pretty cool if this mars volta trivia is real.

  • I just found out that john does all the guitar for the mars volta's cds. omar only writes, produces, and plays live.

  • @TitaniousGrubbs don't stir shit man, that's not true

  • Stir shit? First of all, it is true. Second, I don't know how that would stir shit, I think it's awesome. With Omar producing and John playing The Mars Volta can make exactly the music they want to, and record it how it should be recorded. I don't mean to bring down your world, but fact is fact.

  • @TitaniousGrubbs sorry mate, shit was bringing me down when i posted that last comment. sorry if i seemed like an ass. you're right, that would be pretty awesome, just great musicians collaborating with others :)

  • nothin wrong with that. its still his peice of music. just had someone do the recording .

  • @TitaniousGrubbs

he does tracks, but not all of it, not even close

  • i mean tele

  • flea and p-bass. weird.

  • wicked!!

  • is it me or does it seem like they were playing part of the song Frances The Mute, i think i may be losing it

  • this is the coolest ever...where/when/how did you see this?

  • all three are some of the best in the world

  • in this video. was jhon fruciante joined RHCP?

  • yes

  • yeah. This looks like its from early to mid 2000s...

John was in RHCP from 1988 - 1992 and from 1998 - present (though they are on a break now).

  • this is btw era before the tour, johns got a strat and shorter hair

  • @DimebagsLeftToe I think thats a tele....not sure, but it doesn't look like an ordinary strat

  • yeahyeah

  • yes

  • Flea on a P-Bass. First time I see a vid with Flea playing on a P-Bass since 1985 Rockpalast, Germany one.

  • if i'm not mistaken that's john's p-bass

  • May be :)

    But It's a P-Bass for 100% sure :)

  • Yeah its a shame u cant see omar. And these arent impromptu obviously, but theres a good level of communication

  • this cant be an impromptu jam!! fuck theyre amazing

  • y don't u ask urself that question?

  • i love john fru, but john loves Omar, where the f#$@ is Omar

  • WTF they are 3 excellent players, Omar is as Good as John man, whoever filmed this is a fag

  • I'd buy this.

Also, the video should have focused solely on Omar's beautiful face.

  • ....wow....

  • omar's movements are like a robot on crack

  • why did you exclusively focus in on just john and flea?

  • fuck you Omar is fuckin good

  • omar rodriguesz is so fuckin cool :D haha n__n john and flea are the kings too :D thee 3 rock !

  • can anyone explain wht everyones talking about like 4/4 9/4 7/8

  • Time signature used in music..

  • why dont you frame Omar? because hes not gringo like flea and john? the 3 are excelent players!!!!!!!!

    fucker!

  • Flea playing on a precision bass ?? =O

  • the level of comunication is exceptional, once again the three of them are great, thaks

  • Is Flea playing a Fender Preci here ?

  • yes

  • 4/4 to 9/4?

arguably 3 of the greatest musicians of their time.

  • hahahaha i saw the mars volta and RHCP in the same show cuz they both are produced by rick rubin,,,,,fuckin ausome,,,,,this is the best

  • That would of been the greatest show on earth

  • @teamwinstonismad HELLLZZZ YEAH!!!!

  • being a huge fan of john and the mars volta

seeing them colaborate is just like..insane

  • exactly what that guy said

  • Oh please...for all the people who are saying stuff like "this sucks", "its repetitive"...."this are not the best living guitar players"...just shut up....its a JAM SESSION it means they can JAM....which means they can COMMIT MISTAKES....its just improvisation! and if you were real musicians who play in a REAL band, you would appreciate seeing these guys being human and just enjoying their music...rather than just minding about YOUR opinion.

  • exactly

  • good point however i seriously doubt this is an improvisation

  • @Computerdisplay

totally agree. you dont "rate" artists with achievements and character like this by your lame "this sucks". If you cannot appreciate this, then youre simply not ready and just accept it and dont post BS. :) thanks for posting this video!

  • @Computerdisplay hate to bust your bubble but its clearly not improv maybe some of the solos but the rest is definitely mapped out

  • @s0methinn ....of course the repetitiveness is mapped out, thats how they get space for individual IMPROVISATION on solos!

  • @Computerdisplay Dude. This isn't improv. This is very specifically written out, rodriguez composed it all.

  • @hojima Its always "mapped out", but it is sketchy enough to call it an improvisation.

  • @Computerdisplay IT comes off as very composed to me, but fair enough.

  • 9/4 yeaah

  • lol i was trying to figure that out too

  • I think its

    4/4

    9/8 3 times then 5/4 once

then it might be either 7/8 or 13/16 for the last part, I'm pretty sure its 13/16.

  • Youre right about the first two sections, i think, but i think the last in 7/8, it can be counted in 4 and then 3, which makes it more clear

anyway, really cool jam, i like what they do as a trio

  • sad some people don't comprehend music.

  • You really have no concept of time when you are just jamming along. It happens to a lot of people.

  • it's a jam sesh...

  • un puertorro mi gente omar is ostia PUERTO RICO IS OSTIAAA!!!

  • Some bad asses right there!

  • Frusciante & Omar Rodriguez on stage together (w/flea of course)AMAZING.

  • I LOVE THEM

  • the best living guitar players on one stage! it's like... it's like... dunno.

  • I'm happy that my comment was the most stupid thing u've read all week!!!

  • I'm having the hardest time just trying to figure out the first note to that awesome lead meolody John plays in the intro. can some one help me out? I really want to figure it out.

  • The first note? The first note is an Ab/G#, which is 16 up on the high E.

  • i want to be there !!!!

  • nice seeing flea with that p-bass

  • who the fuck is matt bellamy?

  • muse guitarist

  • can't see omar !!! damn it!!!!

  • This is amazing! <33

  • may rhcp and mars volta live on forever

  • @theboner123 the only good thing about RHCP was john. thats why he left twice. ah ha ha

  • Whats Omar playing?

  • a Gibson SG II or Gibson SG III.

  • They're three musical gifts sent from the heaven <3 :-*

  • shit. is this 9/8 timing. I can't tell..

  • I think that sounds right.

  • for the last few minutes it is 7/8 - count a 4 and a 3 and you can hear it.

  • Whos omar Rodriguez? He sounds good.

  • The Mars Volta's guitarist/mastermind

  • FTW!!!

    Mars volta fo lyfe

  • this is a gift from the heavens.

  • AMEN!!!!

  • wish there was a better view of omar. but john did do the best in this video. nice jam!

  • this jam is amazin all of john and fleas jams are amazin they just hav so much musical chemistry between them its amazin

  • It's a trip seein Flea playin a precision! And sittin down too ha

  • so amazinglyyy awesome...ahh love itt!!!!

  • Though, I wish they showed Omar more in this vid.

It's really focused on Flea and John for most of it.

  • I LOVE ITTTT

  • sweet. i love how well they can build off each other

  • This is pure art, amazing!

  • lol, flea sitting down

  • hahhaaha yea thats not like him at all :D

  • one of the performnces i saw at the knitting factory is was this same trio

they always are just jamming, never play songs, i love that.

hes was also awesome with the drummer josh klinghofer. that show was siick

  • where is the knitting factry , i really wanna see john, flea and omar live

  • hollywood

  • Has anyone ever heard of feeling the music?

  • They all 'feel' their music pretty well if you listen to their band. On this jam flea and john move closer to the paranoia of omar and king crimson. Ok, maybe they push a liiiittle to far each phrase but it doesnt matter. I think that is great to watch, they are all fantastic musicians.

  • no mames q pendejo(a)el q grabo eso casi no graba a omar

  • doesn't anybody just listen to this music?, :S

    deammit

come on dudes, just listen to the sounds and stuff in stead of arguing with each other...

  • lol, for real.

  • true

  • Also, in the parts where flea takes out all the fills and plays slower, you can clearly see him trying to detach himself from the timing grid and lay back on notes. He then quickly snaps back into time when he speeds up again.

The fact that you think Flea is so pathetic as to not be able to keep in time is not only insulting but shows how arrogant you are.

There is nothing wrong with 'shaking his head around like an idiot' either. He is enjoying himself.

  • yeah, he was just trying to change the pace of the jam. you know... slow it down to make it a little more interesting. give some contrast to the crazy latin beat. john immediately looked at him and would have picked it up, but... omar was in another world. which isn't BAD... it just wouldn't have hurt the jam if omar had used his ears a little more.

  • Obviously you don't know that timing isn't confined to a strict grid. Many REAL musicians unlike any of us will lay back a bit on notes, play them a tiny bit late, or rush in and play them a bit before your ear naturally tells you it should go. It adds tension and depth to music. Listen to some interviews with jazz musicians, or when John Frusciante himself is talking about the technique.

It takes a lot more skill to play slightly off beats than it does perfectly on time.

  • i kno john's awesome and he actually is, but i wanna hear omar more!!!!!!!!!!!! wuts the point of them being together then??? omg can't even see him playing..

  • It is like a 10-20 minute jam dude, this is just a lil part, throughout the jam you here omar making noise a lot more than anyone else, at one point flea just looks at john and laughs. Omar is ok, but he gets very repetative and old after a while, The beginning of this vid is one of the only places john switches to lead, because he is humble and always lets other people go ahead of him, but that part is by far, the best part in this whole jam.

  • john and flea have amazing talent.

  • awesome!

  • did you watch the whole thing? 2:20

  • my frien wehre did your ears run to

  • "listen to some fucking jazz you fucking fucktard." - Charles Mingus... well, that's what he say to you, if he wasn't dead :-/

  • i agree with rigerdaby.

  • Omg i hate it when none musicians or SHIT muscicians judge music out of Key you are a Fuckhead

  • anyone to where to get tabs for this

  • P.S. man fleas funny he just looks fuckin outta it I couldn't take my eyes from his swinging head... not quite as energetic as he used to be maybe?

  • Uh, he's kinda sitting down.

They all are, if you didn't notice.

  • and theyre over 40

  • omfg burn!

  • well... could be better... but!!! RIGHT ON ANYWAYS

  • kinda boring

  • nah it's cool

  • Totally agree with Merder812... even much of Frusciante's solo stuff sounds like a loop too. Of the three I think Omar does the best job of mixing it up, although I definitely prefer Frusciante's music.

  • i totally respect all three of these musicians, but the majority of these "jams" sound like tape loops. Meaning it sounds like they just keep playing the same thing over and over again. i wish they broke it down all little bit more into different transitions. All three of them are too good not to show their versatility.

  • it sounds like a captain beefheart song i once heard.. can't remember the name though..

  • You smell.

  • if you want to see omar he shows up around 2:17

  • fucking awesome!!

  • this little group here is called the three amoebas... but they have no live performances... and no studio time... so i dont know why they have a name, but they are awesome none the less

  • i thought the three amoebas where John, Flea, and Stephen Perkins on drums?? i guess John and Flea lay claim to the name if what you say is true..

  • i looked into it a bit more... your right. so says john f.'s website. my bad man, thanks for the correction. i think i got the bad info from wiki... damn wiki

  • I'm sick of all these people saying "Let's just enjoy the music, stop analysing it!". If you want to just enjoy it then that's perfectly fine, but I'd suggest you stay out of commenting with people who want to discuss, in detail, the way in which the music is being played. Sorry to be so aggressive.

  • Let's not get to analytical and just enjoy the music!!! For the love of God people!!!

  • where the hell is Omar??? I know the dudes is short but I can't even see an afro behind that amp...

  • it is very much improvised. jazz isnt such free nonsense, they all know exactly how many bars to play. it comes with playing jazz. they have a key, but they figured it out by ear, instantly because they are so damn good

  • the improv makes me :)

  • does anybody know the name of this song or is just and improv?

  • is there someone able just to enjoy that great song instead of discussing shit???

  • i think strangent might be right, it does seem to be a count of 8 then a 10, i understand why ya wud say 9 9 9 10 cos its eaier to break it down that way but there are definitely 10 counts in the second bar

  • I respectfully disagree ;)

Look at Flea closely, you can see he comes back to the same bass note every 9 beats for the first 3 bars.

9/9/9/10 in my opinion, but who cares, it's a great little bunch of riffs :)

  • Who the feck is giving all these perfectly fine comments negative ratings?

Some people need to get a life.

Great stuff as usual from some of the greatest musicians of this generation (and many other generations as far as RHCP go. 1980's and still going strong!).

  • OMFG that´s so great

  • yeah, really strangent it is 3 bars of 9/8 and a bar of 10/8. of course you can count 4 bars of 4/4 as like, 12/8, 13/8, 7/8, but you wouldn't unless that's where the emphases lay. you could count whatever the hell you want for that groove but 9/8 9/8 9/8 10/8 is clearly the simplest.

  • I'd say Staragent is right. The basslines is repeating stuff at the start of what staragent says, the emphasis seems to fit.

  • Hey Strangent. I tried counting out what you said about the 8/8 then 10/8 then 8/8 then 11/8 and you're right, it does fit into 37 beats, but I don't understand why 3 bars of 9/8 then one of 10/8 isn't correct when it sounds correct. I just wanna learn, I'm not attacking you. Could you please explain your reasoning?
