Stir shit? First of all, it is true. Second, I don't know how that would stir shit, I think it's awesome. With Omar producing and John playing The Mars Volta can make exactly the music they want to, and record it how it should be recorded. I don't mean to bring down your world, but fact is fact.

I'm having the hardest time just trying to figure out the first note to that awesome lead meolody John plays in the intro. can some one help me out? I really want to figure it out.
They all 'feel' their music pretty well if you listen to their band. On this jam flea and john move closer to the paranoia of omar and king crimson. Ok, maybe they push a liiiittle to far each phrase but it doesnt matter. I think that is great to watch, they are all fantastic musicians.
Also, in the parts where flea takes out all the fills and plays slower, you can clearly see him trying to detach himself from the timing grid and lay back on notes. He then quickly snaps back into time when he speeds up again.
The fact that you think Flea is so pathetic as to not be able to keep in time is not only insulting but shows how arrogant you are.
There is nothing wrong with 'shaking his head around like an idiot' either. He is enjoying himself.
yeah, he was just trying to change the pace of the jam. you know... slow it down to make it a little more interesting. give some contrast to the crazy latin beat. john immediately looked at him and would have picked it up, but... omar was in another world. which isn't BAD... it just wouldn't have hurt the jam if omar had used his ears a little more.
Obviously you don't know that timing isn't confined to a strict grid. Many REAL musicians unlike any of us will lay back a bit on notes, play them a tiny bit late, or rush in and play them a bit before your ear naturally tells you it should go. It adds tension and depth to music. Listen to some interviews with jazz musicians, or when John Frusciante himself is talking about the technique.
It takes a lot more skill to play slightly off beats than it does perfectly on time.

It is like a 10-20 minute jam dude, this is just a lil part, throughout the jam you here omar making noise a lot more than anyone else, at one point flea just looks at john and laughs. Omar is ok, but he gets very repetative and old after a while, The beginning of this vid is one of the only places john switches to lead, because he is humble and always lets other people go ahead of him, but that part is by far, the best part in this whole jam.

Who the feck is giving all these perfectly fine comments negative ratings?
Some people need to get a life.
Great stuff as usual from some of the greatest musicians of this generation (and many other generations as far as RHCP go. 1980's and still going strong!).
yeah, really strangent it is 3 bars of 9/8 and a bar of 10/8. of course you can count 4 bars of 4/4 as like, 12/8, 13/8, 7/8, but you wouldn't unless that's where the emphases lay. you could count whatever the hell you want for that groove but 9/8 9/8 9/8 10/8 is clearly the simplest.
Hey Strangent. I tried counting out what you said about the 8/8 then 10/8 then 8/8 then 11/8 and you're right, it does fit into 37 beats, but I don't understand why 3 bars of 9/8 then one of 10/8 isn't correct when it sounds correct. I just wanna learn, I'm not attacking you. Could you please explain your reasoning?
is there a album of this concert?

I'd say Staragent is right. The basslines is repeating stuff at the start of what staragent says, the emphasis seems to fit.
