Kurt Cobain was a guest vocalist on this song for Mark Lanegan's first solo album, The Winding Sheet, which was recorded in 1989 while Nirvana's "Unplugged" album was recorded in 1993. Personally I prefer Nirvana's version, but both are among my favorite musicians.
It's an old folk song that originated in the 1870's. Lead Belly did a version in the 40's.
Mark has been doing this song a lot longer than Nirvana. Kurt liked Mark's version so much that he asked Mark to sing it with him for the Unplugged sessions but Mark declined. So...Kurt did it alone...in Mark's style.
@dead168 the song was supposed to be on a mark lanegan/kurt cobain blues and roots album, but kurt pulled out after two or three songs, over money and it turned into the undertow album

FIRST TIME I HEARD THIS SONG WAS ON MARK'S FIRST SOLO ALBUM "UNDERTOW" WITH CHRIS AND KURT PLAYING THE GUITAR AND BASS..... THEN YEARS LATER I WATCHED KURT DO IT ON UNPLUGGED W/ NIRVANA, AND I COULDN'T HELP BUT WONDER WHERE MARK WAS.....STILL PREFER MARKS BUT BOTH ARE SO AWSOME, WHY MAKE A CHOICE WHEN WE HAVE BOTH....PLUS ALL THE OTHER AMAZING VERSIONS OF THIS SONG IN MY LIFE....
respect to MWR93 but nirvana's version is in essence how mark lanegan has always covered this old leadbely tune. kurt and mark sang it together on mark's debut solo album The Winding Sheet....
@Contorsionista4 This is an old folk song usually known as 'In The Pines.' Traditionally it is associated with Leadbelly. Playing for Lanegan in '91 (on his excellent album 'The Winding Sheet') actually introduced Nirvana to the song!
@diabolikal1990 It is by an old, old, blues singer/songwriter called "Lead Belly" Kobain and Lanegan were going to make Lanegan's first solo album, before Nirvana got famous, back in 1990, but the project was shelved, with only the cover by Lanegan with Kobain on electric guitar seeing the light of day on Lanegan's first solo record, Nirvana did it on MTV unplugged. The original was by lead belly.
