  • @SDZoo, how much do each of the elephants weigh and which individual is the biggest? Please comment/reply back!

  • Enrichment is very hard to provide in zoos.

  • Journeyman47 thank you for your concerns over the well being of the San Diego Zoo's animals. The San Diego Zoo is currently constructing a new elephant exhibit that will be six times larger. The exhibit will incorporate a 137,000-gallon pool, gentle rolling hills, hidden drinkers and feeders to entice foraging. The exhibit will provide an enriching new home for these elephants.

  • Didn't the city stop progress on the new elephant exhibit?

I heard that on KTLA a whiel ago.

  • Your thinking of the LA Zoo, and on January 28th the city council voted to continue progress on LA's elephant exhibit.

  • oh

    Thank you

  • It's a bit hard to see the extent of the elephants' habitat there, but it sure looks small. It's got some posts and junk in there, but the ground is hard and barren.

I sure hope it's bigger than it looks. Elephant normally walk for miles in the wild, and zoo elephants commonly develop arthritis and other diseases. Otherwise, the "enrichment" they get is a poor substitute, and keeping them captive in such an inadequate environment is just plain wrong. They deserve better.

  • This is a wonderful, educational video, and it does what zoos should be most concerned with doing - teaching zoology!

    Thank you for sharing it!
