When I think of Willie -- who is one of my favorites -- I always think of the line from "Raiders of the Lost Ark". "It's not the years, it's the mileage." Willie has a lot of mileage on him -- but unlike everyone else, every mile he gets better. He's like an old vintage car, or old bottle of vintage wine. He'll just keep getting better until the day he dies.
many years ago too much booze and a hell of alot of pot ,gave me a chance of a life time to play with Willie and George Jones. My band fronted both and their respective bass players had par taken too much of the fruit of the vine and the neon lite and were unable to go on.A quick move and I was able to stand in on both occations..God looks after the musicians that stand and watch in the wings.Best memories of my music career.
30 years ago, i had just had my son, and my husband took me to see Willie Nelson for "date night." It was so wonderful! Willie puts on a wonderful performance and believe me, he gives you your money's worth. It is certainly hard to believe he EVER looked like this . What a great talent . I will always be grateful to Willie for giving us such a wonderful "date night!"
I remember seeing Willie on TV when he looked like this, and my mom loved him, but when he resurfaced in the 1970s with long braided hair, she couldn't stand him...but I also remember when someone I knew loved Charley Pride, until they discovered he was black...I was a child and didn't understand both folks reactions...I thought it was about the music....
@kadigiscoot Willie had a diresct hand in getting Pride gigs in Texas. Club ownere would say no because he was black and Willie would then threaten not to play there again unless they booked him. Bless Willie Nelson!
What ever happened to that Willie? I'm not speaking about what happens with age, but what happens with miles and lifestyles that changes a person. There is clearly a price that has to be paid for those choices and Willie has clearly paid the piper. He's still loaded with tons of talent & fans, but that old outlaw look and lifestyle doesn't fly with me! Even worse, it says go ahead to our youth, look like hell, live like hell and give the bird to convention. I'll take the old Willie..
@TheFolksinger1 there was a time I said the same thing. That was when I spent more time worrying about what people thought of me than I did on who I actually was. Then one day I figured out that scissors and a razor couldn't clean up my soul. the message of willies music is one of love and peace and has been since the get green. If we all said "F" you to the mainstream and the status quo, and were free to be ourselves, how much more could we accomplish?
I can't think of any song that Willie has done that I don't like but I never heard these classic songs. He always seem to have a deep appreciation of good music and melodies that have carried him through the years. No matter what the look he has he carries it through with his deep love of music. Thanks Willie and thanks for posting!
I love Willie from all his era's from his begginings to now, but you could definetly tell he wasn't happy back then. He did'nt put any energy into these performances, not that they were'nt good. If you look up his rendition of these songs from his 1974 4th of july picnic you can tell he was happier. Still fun to watch and hear thanks for posting.
I saw a dicumentary where willie expressed that he hated looking like that. despised the slick hiar, suit and the up-tight nature of performances like that.
I'm proud to be 17 and i'm also proud to say i have seen wille, ray price and merle haggerd love, the cool thing is i seen them all at once, makes me feel old though
Those eyes still look the same....stare right into your soul. Same unforgettable voice. Love the music. Used to love to go see him at Texas honky tonks. Those were good times.
Hard to believe Willie was clean-shaven at one point. We saw him in Austin back in the late 60s/early 70s when he looked like this. I don't remember it. My dad says he was late to perform and apologized saying they'd sent him to the wrong stage. Probably was at the Aquafest on Town Lake. Many, many good memories.
First time I saw Willie was at the Rio Grande Valley Country Club Rancho Viejo in July 1972 when I was 8.8 months pregnant with twins, Mark and Bill Davis. He was clean shaven, playing in the country club dining room to about 50 people max. Under the watchful eye of his tall, blonde, beautiful wife Connie he won my heart. Mark and Bill were always Willie fans having heard him invitro.(?)
FYI (from Wikipedia) "... "Crazy" is a ballad composed by Willie Nelson. It has been recorded by several artists, most notably by Patsy Cline, whose version was a #2 country hit in 1962..."
he changed his outfit and so on...because he was a song writer back then and not a popular recording artist, other people were recording his songs and getting famous. He tried to take on the image of someone nashville would want at the time, and he was not being himself and was not getting the recognition he wanted. So he left nashville went back to texas, let people see the real him and he blew up as a rebel country music artist.
srry to say it but willie is not a legend ... legends is on a lvl way way way below him ... in my world there are(were) 2 at a unique lvl way abowe all the others ... they are Patsy Cline and Willie Nelson.
oooh Willie is just as amazing t'day as he was in his youth! Very serious in those days tho', mebbe that's why he turned to the drugs, to loosen up a little p'haps? Who knows, but it's great to see him this young, thanx Geeky!!
This was when I really liked Willie, not that I didn't when he was an old hippy but he wrote and sang his best at this time. He changed just to spit in Nashville's face I think.
thats brilliant im only 22 and i absolutely love willie, its funny how they expected you to look clean and shaving and well presented, im glad he changed his image later, its suits him alot better.
Willie Nelson's immense talent as a songwriter sometimes overshadows the fact that he's one of the greatest vocal stylists ever. You'll hear plenty of people sing Willie Nelson songs, but you'll never hear anyone sing it like Willie.
I met him in person at the grocery store in Brevard, NC. He was great. Really nice and down to earth. We laughed and talked for 20 minutes. He had a six pack of root beer and a bag of popcorn. The next time I saw him a few months later, He remembered my name. He is a Awesome Man.
This is SUPER stuff! Notice that Willie's voice kinduv breaks when he starts Crazy. Like many of ours does when we hear a song done by Patsy. Never will be one like her! This was when he was at his best, just my opinion...THANKSGeeky!!!

Being only 16 years old, I have never seen Willie like this. So young! Almost ubelievable for someone who has only seen todays version :-) Anyway, great songs, what a fantastic voice that man has
@budweiserman8404 Willie hated the Nashville way with the premanufactured image. Of course that's something that's still prevalent today but that's probably a rant for another video. Willie didn't become the long-haired outlaw until the 70s really. Red Headed Stranger.
@Nynorskmannen Hey man, I'm 38 and to me, Willie has looked the same since I can remember. He hasn't changed a bit. This video deffinately is a different look for him that I'm not used to seeing either.
There will never be another one like him when he's gone... A true legend!
Does anyone know where I can find Willie singing "Little Things"? He wrote this and I had it on an album years ago, and I cant find it now or on Utube. thanks!!
I love Willie's voice here. Crazy, Funny How Time Slips Away, Night Life, Hello Walls. Always great songs. I enjoy hearing these songs. Thanks for posting.
