the third guitar is backup, to make sure the sound is good... Noodle's is the lead guitar, wich play's the solo's and mostly the main thing you hear.

Dexter is Rythm guitar, wich riffs are almost the same as the bass line

The third one is an extra rythm to be sure.

(I think it's quite usefull tho... Dexter and Noodles aren't always 10)% sober on the stage I think, so they might miss a note every now and then ;))
