We had these in my house as a kid and they are overpowering with their vibration and it can compensate pretty well for the noise. It can be very pleasant.
aside from firing up a chainsaw, this is the most unrelazing thing a person could place in proximity to ones ear. horrible idea, and one "tradition" im glad to see go...
