The 21% that have never searched for information on the internet doesn't surprise me. Not all the elderly population has braced the new technology and I don't blame them. Also there are millions of people in this world who are a little more worried about where their next meal will come from or where they are going to sleep tonight--and I don't buy the library excuse. If I am homeless and starving, researching on the internet is the last thing on my mind.
once you get the internet connection that is it you can not live without it. if you never owned one you will be ok but will want it. . but when you get it your self you will get no time and lose connection with the outer world. i haven't watched t.v in months. you just dont get time. its killing us and draining our life.
Whoa those statistics are true!? Where I'm from, you can't go past the 8th grade without creating a document on the computer. I'm so glad they thought me how to type, I can't live without the computer! And I rely on the internet for almost too much information. Libraries are old school. :P
I could NOT live without internet, it was down for 23 days this month! Because we moved house and i was sitting there with withdrawl symptoms, it was terrible. But i did see the sunlight for the first time in 2 years! I started to smoke at first, kind of like a vampire :P (Joke, lol.)
Maybe there should be a not-for-profit organization that pays for technology for those who cannot afford it. One of my neighbors are struggling and cannot afford the connection, let alone a new computer that is compatible with the internet.
The kids do go to school, so it's not like they're completely without.
well, chris, someone my mum sits next to in church who is 90 years old has just bought herself a new computer, she loves surfing the web & is quite experienced at doing so. I love it when older generations of people know how to use computers just as well as the average user today.
Well chris. i think that the generation like my grandpa, are not that interrested in the internet and Pc stuff.
but our generation and the ones that are comning has the Internet and pc like a aprt of their life already.
when my internet doesn't work when the Service provider has a problem. I become so paranoid that i just need to get out of home go somwhere to distract myself.
it is more then just internet it has become a part of your every day life.
Just to be literal they study things hard because they get government grants in studying these things and the longer they can drag it on the more money they can drain from the government.
The problem is the telephone companies limiting the speeds and not making enough effort in rural areas. It is not commercially viable, which is why I think the government should take control providing high speed access to everyone bringing everyone into the 21st century and letting businesses remain competitive with the rest of the world.
If the Government has complete control over the internet, *they* can start to limit what is put onto the internet.
That said, I wouldn't mind having public wi-fi terminals in public areas. Laptops are becoming inexpensive. Libraries, schools, government buildings, etc, etc. Anyone who uses the government buildings for any reason (like getting unemployment) can have access.
For those who cannot afford a computer, there cold be a few computers for public use as well.
it's like sitting in front of a computer without internet. you try to open internet explorer but it says the page cannot be found. i feel really 'claustrophobic' when that happens. i just feel really disconnected.
Nah i could never live with out my email i have 4 emails coming threw my personal email box.. and for family hotel we always send out docs to staff. so nah with out email i would be stuffed.
I believe email is the backbone of my internet life. If it wasn't for that i would never know what's going on on youtube, I would never know if i got any messages from second life, I would never know if a purchase was made to my paypal, and i would feel like I'm the only one on the internet. :P
They're 80% spam anyway, whether it's because they were used in domain registration and harvested from there or just getting buried in responses since some spammer's using the address as a reply-to.
BTW I think you're wrong about the mobile vs. 'big screen' internet. I think it will be both. Broadcast TV will go away in favor of nitch stuff (like youtube... longtail ya know?) that can only be enabled by internet. Mobile has it's place, buy you only use it because you don't have the superior I/O available. And video, NOBODY wants to watch it on a small screen (you do? seriously? LOL)
We are internet laggards (compared to may other nations) because we are still blinded by 'free-market' dogma that resists structuring of markets. Never mind ARPANET was created by goverment employees. Whaco libertarians will never, ever, ever admit that central planning has it's place.
i shop online, phone calls, email, chat, watch tv, and just about everythign you can do with a computer. ive eliminated a house phone and cable plus wasting time gas and so on. so yeah im saving big time with the internet. but cell phone bill kilss me. everybody should use the net more. yourl be surprized on how much you really save,do and can learn. i would die if i didnt have the net! peace. gregg
I have recently started using ubuntu just to learn Linux I think with all the free software out there that brings the cost of a PC/LTOP down a lot it has a way to go but in time it will be goodbye to MS I think the fear factor is media and tech programs making things seem harder than they are.
i have a question about ustream or like any type of streaming website! Does streaming a live show slow down your computer? I really want to know because I might get a new computer and I don't want to slow down my new computer by streaming a webcast! Please answer me! I would really like to know!!!
Thanks
P.S. If I do get a new computer it will probably be an Apple Macbook Pro (But i don't know if that has an effect on anything
Your on a video roll today man like every 2 hours a new video. Dang thats alot for one day but it does get boring around here so i watch alot of the videos. And i think like 95 percent. But it doesnt show that.
I'll tell you what stops people from using computers more...........Microsoft WIndows!!! My parents hate messing w/ the computer, b/c of PC complications that shared them off!
Macs are the best. Even the Mac Mini would be better than a Dell or HP etc.
i don't need the net to be alive, but the net is my primary mode of entertainment, it's a great tool, and its a great way to communicate with business colleagues, friends, family, etc..so it's almost a necessity for me to have the net to get anything done.
The answer to your question is simple. Our parents and grandparents are that 20%, and living longer. With the postage stamps are rising in price that 20% is already lowering.
i agree i need my internet for shopping and learning on all part so i dropped my landline to get a magic jack and so i siphon off the money to pay for broadband service i am a have not but the internet is a lifesaver to me sorry
