Russia makes specific weapons to sink US carriers. They have a monster torpedo and supersonic cruise missiles that the US Navy doesn't have and will have a very difficult, if not impossible time to intercept.

@AccordGTR all of those weapons are becoming obsolete. carriers are expensive moving water bases. When you can fire missles from miles away on land that do the same thing as launched planes and increased airplane range of flight taking off from land. The fuel and manpower it takes to have an aircraft carrier and to maintain it probably is less effective then it once was anyhow

Basically, on a grand skim of things, this was American way to show disrespect to the Soviets by systemically violating their claimed sea border in that location and to see how far they can push the Soviets. And Soviet way of boldly taking no shit from the Americans. Any use of weapons in this situation would have quickly escalated with drastic consequences. So Soviets effectively pushed back without firing a single shot and forced Americans to retreat. Respect to the Soviets on this.

Both Captains were at fault here. In a time where the World hung by the balance, these two Captains allowed their military vessels to come within unsafe distances. I'm not even talking 100,200,300 feet. I'm talking a half mile! Ships don't stop on a dime nor is there anything good that could have come from having two opposing ships so close on rolling seas. Not to mention the fact that the Yorktown has a displacement of near 20,000 tons and this little guy like maybe 4,000 tons. She is TINY!
