After reading yours and others' comments, I realized that women all around the world have been (and on some level still are) oppressed. They have been told what they should do and be and how they should look. Of course, the ideas of patriarchy still linger, on some level, in many of us. Today the questions becomes "When will women finally understand that seeking approval from without is enslavement.?" Real beauty (my opinion) begins within ones mind first of all and in the heart most of all.
Thank you so much for shedding light on this subject and yes it happens all around the world .I am a bi racial woman and have lived all over the world .NO it just doesnt happen in the U.S ITs everywhere .I am just now starting to learn I am not my hair .
@arbiya1984 Thank you Arbiya, I know it does and we have got to figure out how to stop the madness and allow what beauty we possess inside to come out. That where real beauty lies. I can remember a time when I thought that there were no ugly people. As a young woman, I did not find the concept of ugliness useful. Then I began to see how truly ugly we could treat one another, then I could see ugliness in others. Innocence only sees beauty I suppose.
@dallasdoc3@dallasdoc3 Beauty is what you say it is; but how do you decide what it is in the first place. See, it is impossible not to be affected by what the culture says beauty is. So, how do women begin to say "You know, I am going to do this my way." I cut my hair off because that is what i wanted to do. Now, I have colored my roots a sort of platinum color. But, I did it for me. It looked good to me. I wasn't thinking about anyone else--not my friends, my man, no one--consciously, that is.
i dont know about different cultures, but i think that maybe in our culture, propaganda, advertising of all these beauty products and whatever, has led us to believe what they show us is beautiful.
You're right. Now, for those of us who want to follow our own standard (if that's possible), we have to begin thinking about what is influencing our behavior. Then we have to simply not GIVE IN to the propaganda! Maybe hard, but it can be done. the key is THINKING. Thanks for your comments.
