  • i would like to know what kind of mouthpiece that is too. as a french horn player i've only seen it one other time and never figured out what the brand was. i like to the horn be so versitile

  • @ceazerstp Looks like a plated denis wick heavy top, I could be wrong though.

  • what kind of mouthpiece is that

  • This sounds like a song from gran turismo.

  • Beautiful!

  • I love this ohhh my goodness :) im gonna go be in jazz band with my horn now lol

  • Which mouthpiece are you using, and which benefits does it have. Really interested, please write back :)

    Great solo by the way!

  • wow, really crisp playing, sir. I am a hornist as well. very Well done.

  • This is really brilliant! I just brought my first French Horn today, and I'm just looking towards this video for a bit of inspiration to get an idea of how a professional would play it! I love bossanova, and both trombone and french horn are perfect for the genre(as well as any other instrument is besides the guitar(violao))!

  • Gostaria ouvir um chorinho...

  • bravissimo, I love the light mellow tone, it fits so much better with smooth style jazz, or bebop, rather then the rough edged tone most jazz hornists use for blues. I liked this very much mr. hoffer, and @kukhofkapellmeister reading chords is shameless, unto each musician his own, if the music is beatiful and done well, what does it matter how it is done? I am curious what mouthpiece you use, I've been a bit out of the loop on mouthpieces since I get all mine custom made.

  • A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! This year was my first year playing the French horn and I know how difficult this instrument is. partials and notes, basically muscle memory in you chops. I love playing melodies and counter melodies on horn! when you nail something so beautiful the amazing feeling and goose bumps you get are the best!!

  • is this cool jazz? I really have a hard time finding Jazz genres i like.

    Can anyone help me!!!!

  • @link2217 the description says latin jazz :)

  • @link2217 read the description...

  • hows the range on that mouthpiece, and loudness

  • Comment removed

  • amazing! I want to be such a cool Horn player…

  • I am a 6th grade player amd I just learnt something cool...that French Horns are important in Latin Jazz! When learning about the Jazz Age in History when all the trumpets are cheezin you feel left out lol.

  • french horn is such a beautiful instrument.

  • where can i get the sheet music for this???!!!!

  • u sounded devine im also a double french hornist but im on a 10th grader but im hoping im going to go places

  • THIS IS SEXY

  • I'm an avid jazz fan and just happened upon you and of course subscribed. Excellent and thank you!!

  • SWEET!!!!

  • I'm Polish and I play the French horn and I think it's great

  • How can anyone say an instrument isn't Jazzy? Jazz is a style of music and if your good enough you can make any instrument sound jazzy. Its called being a good musician

  • BAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA

  • God the audience is asleep. I'd be actively listening.

  • beautiful, smooth fluid tone sir- thanks for sharing.

did you recieve training from a mentor, or teach yourself?

  • MAn you seems to have one large mouth piece >.<

  • Very good, I'm wondering what mouthpiece are you using ?

  • Good Music!!

  • Love it! And wh cares if an instrumentalist uses notes for a solo? There are tons of talented artists that memorize licks and solos off a written solo. I doubt that's what Mr. Hoffer is doing, but still. To each their own. Awesome job. The rest of the combo is exceptional as wel!

  • what kind of mouthpiece is that, that giovanni's using? is it an extra large trumpet mouthpiece or a special for jazz horn?

  • Nice Music ! ! ! have Style ! ! !

  • What kind of mouthpiece are you using?

  • Love it...

  • What a unique flavor this ensemble has... I really like it - great playing!

  • @ninjamaster2000 It's a Denis Wick, heavy top.

  • Humble thanks, nice work!

  • @thekamikazestudios French Horns are NOT crappy sounding! every instrument has its own unique sound I for one think french horns have a very beautiful soft sound.

  • @thekamikazestudios trombones evolved from the 'Sackbutt', and horns are the crappier ones?? #LOL

  • @thekamikazestudios lol! Not even close. 1) French Horn is bigger. 2) The Trombone sounds so good, the default mouthpiece is about twice as deep as it should be.

If it weren't for the stupid slide gimmick, Trombone would have been dumped from the brass line up ages ago.

  • so cool!

  • @kukhofkapellmeister

    I'm sorry,but I don't use written notes...I read the chords.

  • @giohoffer oh, so I'm the one who has to be sorry.

  • @kukhofkapellmeister

    you are welcome :-)

  • @giohoffer yeah, I've been improvising for some time, and i still need chords for some songs, mostly if the song has several quick chord changes

  • @giohoffer I guess what he's trying to say is that it sounds like the improvised section of the piece sound heavily rehearsed then being what happens at the spur of the moment. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you aren't, but maybe that's what he thinks... It's definitely a breath of fresh air for what i've been listening to and trying to program into my brain to progress musically and improvisation as well. Keep it up!

  • @giohoffer that comment made my day.

  • @giohoffer wow- you're amazing!!! what song is this?

  • @kukhofkapellmeister

lol i have the sheet music always with me to that i can take a look because sometimes it gets really confusing^^ and how would you need notes for a jazz solo ? you have to improvise oO

  • OMG!!

  • very well played... do you mind telling me what type of mouthpiece you use? It seems like its a bucket mouthpiece

  • You said you composed this? Is there any way you can send the horn part to me?

  • This is excellent!

  • hey awesome stuff - don't suppose you can send me the sheet music for this please?

  • For some free-form improvised jazz on the horn, check out Arkady Shilkloper's videos on YouTube - totally different style.

  • I do love FH

  • what music is this?

  • This is the first time I ever heard jazz on a French Horn that sounded nice and 'there'.

  • what kind of mouthpiece is that?!

  • wow that was so cool! compared to that i really suck!

  • YEAH DOC!!! this cat is killin yo

  • Nice french horn playing. I play horn in airforce concert band.

  • I played the french horn during concert season/contest in junior & high school band. It all started when in 7th grade I broke my right-hand ring finger in gym class, so I couldn't play my trumpet. Band director asked me to play the horn & the rest is history, hahaha. I sat 1st chair horn during concert season, & alternated between 1st/2nd chair trumpet during marching season. Best time of my life! This jazz horn is great! Fantastic sound!

    Merry Christmas!!!

  • I was in jazz band in high school and played French horn. I improvised quite a few times at concerts. When the director would introduce my solo, he'd always say "And now, our JAZZY HORN!" Good times.

  • and my band teacher says that french horns aren't jazzy!!!

IM GOING TO SHOW HER THIS!!!!!!!!

  • @earnieoldbrush Your band teacher is an Idiot.

My teacher was straight up "Any instrument can play Jazz"

  • @earnieoldbrush That's indeed what's so beautiful about it! The French horn is indeed not your typical Jazz instrument, but here...! I cannot see any other instrument doing a better job.

  • Love!!

  • This guy is an inspiration to us all.

I asked to play a solo on horn in jazz band.

The director said that jazz upbeats don't sound as good as I think they do.

    I was frustrated.

  • o me too! i play the french horn in the middle school band... so after i watched this vid i was like "wow! so i could actually be in the jazz band without swtchin to trumpet!"

  • dude i hope you all realize how hard that shit is

  • i play french horn now for middle school band...cant wait till i find some music like that

  • dude trust me u won't see music like his in middle school for french horn ¬_¬ slight chance in high school but dnt keep ur hopes up

  • thats pretty cool

  • omg awesome XD

  • dude his mouth piece almost looks like a trombones

  • I'm guessing it's a gold-plated Bach megatone mouthpiece.

  • awesome

  • if it wasnt for the amazing long tones on all the regiesters u can he wouldnt have such good tone and his jumps from notes wouldnt be so clean Gratz::)

  • AND MI FRENDS SAY U CANT PLAY DA FRENCH HORN IN JAZZ!!!!! XD

    IN UR FACES!!!!! XD

    serves u rite!!

  • oh yeah... thats what im talking about. i only dream of sounding like that

  • If only i could do that...

  • how much are his mouthpieces? they look hecka sick

  • They're custom made dude!

  • What mouth piece does he use?

  • Giovanni Hoffer = best jazz soloist EVER!

  • I LOOOOOOVE this tune! Is there any way I can buy the sheet music from you? I would LOVE to play this tune on gigs (I'm a bass player, I live in NY). I used to play the French Horn - it was my 1st instrument for 10 years. I understand how difficult this instrument is, so I respect you very much for sounding so great AND for playing it so well in a Jazz context. WOW! Well done! Great work & BEAUTIFUL tune!

    Yours sincerely,

    27boof

  • did you write this? or is it like an old song?

    (Hello from Mexico.)

  • gasp my band teacher was wrong! french horn can be plaied in jazz

  • haha, i know right? I play horn, and i was happy to find horn-jazz. but yea, its hard on a horn, because on a sax you can play a random assortment of notes, and it sounds jazzy, but on horn u have to have the perfect key signature, and the notes are so close together.

  • u need to have perfect key signature for any jazz instrument.

it's what improv is all about.

  • Its a megaton mouthpiece it has more mass so it transfers sound better........ btw its an awesome vid im in the 9th and two years ago my band director put me on horn and the vid has inspired me

  • Wow, this is really great. You should do a demo for horn jazz and put it on here I would be really interested in something like that.

Your mouth piece looks pretty crazy too... What kind is it?

  • yea that mouthpiece looks wierd.

  • hi woohoo...not only for jazz...

  • @giohoffer hey, what kind of mouthpiece is that

  • do u use a special mouth peice for jazz cause it looks different?

  • sorry...i read the chords...bye

  • @giohoffer quick question, how do you feel about mutes, i mean my teacher tells me to use my hand instead of getting a mute. what do you think?

  • Are they reading the music from a sheet??

Beautiful performance but reading from a sheet is the opposite of Jazz.

  • The lady in the adience is my wife...and this song is devoted to her...I don't know if she really loves it...ah ah

  • its great but the lady in the adience looks half asleep

  • love the tone...

  • Wow, that was incredibly slick. Loved it.

  • Donde puedo compra la musica?

  • what kind of mouthpiece is that?

  • that guy is really really good

  • I like that jazz its sick. the mouthpiece doesn't make a difference though.

  • the mouth piece looks like a Marcinkiewicz. then again there are so many horn mouth pieces that look like that.

  • Dude, this is pretty sweet...got the groove. but what the heck kind of mouthpiece is that?? Ive never seen a horn mouthpiece like that

  • perfectto! bellisima!

  • cornista perfetto, unico e bravissimo. Mi piace il corno in fatto di jazz, vorrei sapere dove posso trovare spartiti jazz x corno...

  • praticamente bravissimo

  • I LOVE!!!

  • Porra...

    Td d bom esse video,D+!!!

até m animou a fazer uma coisa parecida com o pssoal!!!vlw!!!

  • What kind of mouthpiece is that?

  • thats really cool! ^-^

  • dude... im a jazz trombonist who plays french horn in concert band, but now im gonna play horn in combo! woohoo!

  • look @ da mouthpiece he uses thats y he sounds like dat.....but good sound n-e-wayz

  • Mouthpiece doesn't have anything to do with his sound

  • This is some awesome stuff. I have really been having fun playing jazz horn recently and it's great to have such inspiration from watching these performances!

  • The french horn compliments the Rhode so well. I love the music, too. :O

  • Similar in sound a bit to a flugal horn don't you think?

  • Mammamia ...sei BRAVISSIMO :D

  • by any chance do you have the sheet music for this or anyone know where to get it? i could really use it for my jazz band try out. plz^^"

  • Where can I find the sheet music for this? I can't find any jazz pieces for french horn.

  • Learn to transpose? It's not hard to transpose B flat trumpet music.

  • Didn't know it was for trumpet. Thanks

  • No, Mukwic meant that if you want jazz pieces for French horn you should transpose jazz pieces for trumpet. This was specifically written by the horn player for horn.

  • that mouthpiece is massive but it's probably for a deeper warmer sound which is obviously apparent.

  • that mouthpiece is massive..

  • mann i learn the flute and it's like difficult to play jazz imo. want to learn horn, horn jazz sounds nice!

  • nice, today is the first time i've really heard jazz french horn stuff. i want one so bad but i specialize in woodwinds.....the flute is my most known instrument. this is cool foreal.

  • the mouthpiece is a heavy top and he might also have a mute on or stopping the horn with his hand

  • His tone comes from is excessive use of th Bb side of the horn, which has a much more mellow tone than the F side, not stopping or muting.

  • ah, i've been trying to convince my jazz director to let me try out horn on some peices forever.

i'm 2nd trombone in jazz, as well as 2nd horn in symphonic, and i've tried trumpet and flute.

nothing comes close to comparing to the horn.

  • whoa...... weird mouth peice...... is it easier to play? i don't play with the B flat key

  • ur mouthpiceis is different, y? dont get it

  • Very well played

  • I had no idea french horn could sound that well playing a jazz piece. This was quite shocking actually. It was really good. The sound is so beautiful. It kinda sounded like a trombone and and a trumpet fused together. Brilliant!

  • lol... trombone and trumpet.. it really does though!!!

  • Alfred Publishing has three series that include horn books: Gershwin by Special Arrangement, Movie Songs by Special Arrangement, and Broadway by Special Arrangement, all arranged by Carl Strommen. Each comes with a CD with full performance plus a track with live rhythm section accompaniment. There are 11 titles in each book. The jazz section in each song has chord symbols and a written out improvisation. They are great fun just to play or use in recital/concert. There is also a piano accomp.

  • where can i get the music for this piece in england? could you please reply i would love to buy it!!!!

  • where can i get the music for this piece in england? could you please reply i would love to buy it!!!!

  • love it

  • wats up w/ ur mouthpeice? it looks like a trumpet mouth peice stretched out. Mine looks completely different

  • This is awesome! 5 stars

  • You have a great tone color unlike many jazz hornists.

  • i must agree.

  • this sounds so cool! i used to play F.horn in middleschool. i wish i could buy one and pick up where i left off. they cost like 4,000$ though and i need a car still. such a unique and verasatile instrument.

  • Amazing!!! It almost sounds like a saxofone!!

  • una muy buena conbinacion

  • giovanni giovanni giovanni grande grande grande ma sul forum del corno ci sono degli idioti mai visti. ciao grande hoffer.

  • weird gold plated mouth piece..is that realy necesary??

  • It's probably not completely necessary... But the gold plating and extra mass gives the horn a unique tone that is well suited to the jazz setting.

  • You are so awesome.

  • French horns are so cool. xP
