Aw, I felt the same as you about the Crow, then I reread it and oh-my-gosh. It was amazing, and I really liked Hem by the end of it too. It's nice to know that you read the books by Kristin Cashore :D I think you would like Poison Study by Maria V Snyder and The Magicians Guild by Trudi Canavan.

it is a really great series, it has Genius Squad as the 2nd, and a third book coming out in the USA in October

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

It's not really YA. It's quite dark but I loved it. I think you should check it out.

It's for kind of a younger audience, and I haven't read it in a long while; but I think A Walk Out of the World probably fits with those books and is really good.
