Diana was weak on the falsetto. But the entire number was staged for her.....by the end of

the song she was way out front and the Sups and the Tempts were reduced to dancing puppets. In retrospect you can't really compare......everyone else on stage was handicapped.

Since The Supremes were one of Ed's biggest regularly invited-back guests, and one of the 1960's most important musical acts, it'd be nice if they put out a DVD of all The Supremes' Sullivan performances--including the specialty numbers they did on those shows along with their own hits. Ditto for other acts who were regulars on his show, instead of just piecemeal DVD issues. (Supremes singing "Always," medley with Ethel Merman, etc.) Can't blame fans for posting what SOFA's DVDs don't have.

There's a very little noted but interesting moment here when Diana gets a piano cue in the middle of the medley to establish her key for the next passage. The Sullivan Show preferred live orchestra, live vocals. Sometimes for Motown acts lip synching was employed for the hits because the house orchestra could not replicate the Motown sound effectively.  Singing live, it was very hard for the singers to hear the orchestra clearly on stage, hence the piano cue in this case.

Diana Ross had more of a pop sound than R&B. You cannot compare her to the Temptations. They are both equally great but have their own sound and style. As a singer I don't think Ross had the best voice but she had the ability as a musician to use it to the best effect. The way she and Supremes sang show tunes and standards with ease was unheard of for pop groups in the sixties. Berry Gordy knew that he had an act with the talent to appeal to all age groups.
