"Longboard" is a word originally used in place of "long skateboard", no different than it's used in surfing (long surfboard). That definition didn't change, people just forgot what it meant. It has nothing to do with the wheels, trucks, or riding style, it's just length. Any skateboard less than 3ft is not a longboard. Jeremy Peckham skates street style on a longboard street setup.

Skateboarding has been around since the 50s, popscicle shape decks and modern street style skating started in the 90s. Downhill skateboard racing predates the modern mainstream style.
