I don't buy the basic message--saves money. As a young man I used a single blade. Had to change the blade every week or two. Now with my Quattro I get 4-6 months per cartridge and get a closer shave.
Love your work your mantic! I've just received my new Merkur Barber Pole razor and Prosario shaving soap and after shave. Now I'm just waiting for my shaving brush to arrive and I'll be good to go!
I switched to a Gillette DE razor that was made in 1962. It took me a few weeks to find the blade that worked best for me, but once I did I never wanted to go back to modern cartridge razors.
I spent about $15 for a bulk order of Derby razors and have enough to last for over a year. Plus, my face has never felt better.
Side note--old skool shaving is also easier on the environment. No more plastic cartridges going in the trash.
hey mantic, i will say that i have been shaving "retro" for about 5 months now and i love it. It is cheaper and more enjoyable. thanks for all the tips!
It's not that I'm tired of paying a high price for cartridge blades - I am tired of paying the dear price of a bloody mess for a single blade that does not forgive me for a slight slip.
With a multi-blade pivot head, cartridge razor blades, you are paying for a system that forgives you if you slip - then when you go to work, your face does not look like a massacre!
Thanks for the entertaining videos, I have enjoyed watching them, much appreciated.
It is true that perhaps a pivot head multi-blade can be forgiving, but at the same time its highly prone to ingrown hairs, razor burns, and skin irritation. I converted to wet shaving 3 weeks ago and my skin feel great. I get a much closer shave than with a multi-blade pivor head razors and no more ingrown hairs.
Of course one caveat of wet shaving is that prep-time/shaving time takes longer and there is a learning curve involved, but personally I think its worth it.
Mantic, you really understand how to place those nice girls in the video to make em appear in the thumbnail. And you finally got rid of the crappy 'break the law, etc.'.
It took me about two weeks to go from shaving with the cartridge razor to getting a good shave from my safety razor. Preparation is the key, a good lather makes things much easier.
See I couldnt disagree more. My face has loved me since the switch, and I guess I dont nderstand your "scruffy" comment. My shaves have never been closer, or lasted longer. . .
me being one of them, the whole thing was a bloody mess for me, i find the cheap stick razors with the fixed head and two blades works best, i still use the high quality lather.
I too continue to use the high quality lather and badger hair brush (Simpson PJ2).
I even started shaving my head a few months ago (with the MACH 3) and I even tried it with the Safety (yes, I actually tried it twice) - never again with a Safety!
The MACH 3 forgives you if you slip slightly where all three blades seem to echo, "we forgive you!"
i didn't shave for 3 and 1/2 weeks and then shaved today. But i did leave the best mustache ever! i'll probably put up a vid in the next few days featuring it :)
PS i could never ever ever go back to shaving with the foam in pressurized cans!

Do you know of any chain stores that carry DE blades? So far I've seen Gillette and Wilkinsons at Bed Bath and Beyond.

JDMEJ1- Try CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, etc. I've even seen them at Walmart. However the quality generally isn't very good. Try a variety of brands.

At 0:04 you have text that reads, "MARK 7" Razor Blades.
Which company makes the "MARK 7" ?

newyorkfish- Its a fake name.

Ah, of course!
Very clever and creative. :o)

Although the way things are going, I won't be surprised if we eventually see a 7 blade cartridge. We're already at 5 blades.

gillette actually produced an 8 blade rezor at one point!!!!!
but was pulled out of circulation as the razor face was too long to comfortably shave the top lip so people stopped using it :)

I tried to make shaving a pleasurable hobby, but I just couldn't do it.
I don't use the "Safety" razor anymore - too many bad experiences and I don't miss the bloody mess in the process.
Yes, I understand your technique of proper angle - but got tired of the stubble or "scruffy" look.
Make one or two mistakes, then you wind up regretting it (like I did).
It's easier to use a pivot head multi blade cartridge razor than a single blade that does not forgive you for a slight slip of the motion.
