problem is, that people seem to miss, is these are all prototypes, never got beyond idea stage. Apple have actually designed a successful multi-touch mouse. it's released and working. i don't know what came first out of the magic mouse and the multi touch mouse here and neither do you. there's no real way of knowing when Apple started development on the Magic Mouse.
but NOOOOOOO, microsoft is way better than mac... it's not like microsoft is just taking macs ideas and saying it's some big innovation... i'm so sick of microsoft
@zoomcow: Sorry, but you are wrong. The optical mouse was developed in 1981 by a man named Richard Francis Lyon for Xerox, and has never had any associations with Microsoft. In fact, at one time the man worked for Apple.
Microsoft didn't copy Apple's Magic Mouse. Both companies had the concept in development, except Apple didn't shout out about it. They released it before Microsoft expected it.
From the company that invented the first optical mouse with sub-coordinate tracking at a time when everyone had mechanical ball mice. Microsoft not only invented these technologies but has had many different types of mice. I don't care that they lead in this area, but what gets me is apple fans are always quick to assume it's copied from apple because that's what they are fed from from mac ads. MS definitely leads in the concept of making tracking technologies that follow movements etc.
You gotta read little bit of history before making such claims.
First mouse was invented by Engelbart in arc, funded by arpa.
Engelbart made the first GUI in Stanford.
Xerox was first to make it commercially that too with a mouse.
Apple and microsoft were not even born by then.
Microsoft or apple has never done "any research" that changed the world. They just copied it and made it available to public. At a cost that makes people poor and them rich. Capitalistic Scums
@zoomcow its funy they invented all these thins and "lead" in all these areas in "technologies trackin movments" or wutever, but yet they kept their halo players stuck to gamepads playin shit people were usin mice for 15 years ago.
@zoomcow You are wrong, and should stop licking Bill Gates asshole. Magic mouse, Apple first. Trackpad, Aplle first. iPad, Apple first. Ipod touch, nano touch, Apple first. iPhone, Apple first. Everyone, including microsoft copy apples touch and other technologies. Yet despite the copying, Apple make the only laptops with glass muti touch pads that integrate with a fully touch oriented OS. How can you call someone leaders when they're miles behind?
@Big0ldBear Aw, thats cute. You think the trackpad and iPad were made by Apple first? All Apple did was get multitouch and apply it to their existing products, as well as tablet PCs that were already out at the time and touch phones that also existed. What I'm saying is, they invented nothing - they simply IMPROVED (not invented) existing multitouch technology and applied it to already existing products.
Also, zoomcow is talking about MS, not Bill Gates; you do know he left MS a while ago right?
Just because Microsoft released a PROTOTYPE video before apple doesn't mean apple copied them... it would be IMPOSSIBLE to make a multi touch mouse and put it on a product line in less than 20 days (20 days after this video was released, apple released their mouse)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Big shock. Microsoft can't get something out of the prototype stages and Apple makes it happen.. AND puts it in a sexy design. Microsoft = fail as usual.
- _ - too many fan boys here. Microsoft introduced the ideas first with prototypes. They had 4+ different models with different technology in each, but sadly, they're all still in the prototype stage.
Apple came up with the idea later, and released a sexy, mult-touch mouse that can do the basic things that you can do with a multi-touch trackpack first. They only have one version though.
It doesn't even matter, Microsoft commands 97% of the PC (That's personal computer) OS market. And that's not even counting all the people who ran boot camp on there macintrash to get the superior OS and be able to actually DO something with there PC.
Either way about it Microsoft will be getting their touch mice soon enough.
Making some fancy pants mice just isn't enough, apple. Maybe if you have open development? More practical prices? Power? Compatibility?
I have boot camp. Never use it, except for games. Windows vista/7 can't multitask for shit. That's what I use mac. I can have 20+ apps open in OS X and hardly notice any slow down. If I have windows explorer and firefox open in 7 and try to open notepad, it hangs for about 15 seconds then opens. Any new open programs after than hang for 30 seconds, then a minute. I think you get the pattern. After the 3rd they all run so slow. It was the same with vista.
I have leopard and windows 7 and would be lying if I didn't point out windows 7 is over all better than osx. As for multi-tasking I can tell you don't know shit about computers. I have an i7 @ 3.6ghz, ddr3, 1TB, great gfx all for $800 and it blows away imacs. macs should be good at video rendering but my machine finishes in less than 1/2 the time. That's because apple puts shitty core 2 duo, 3 year old tech in their systems. i7 has been out for a year and they are only now waking up.
Also running osx on apple hardware along with windows is a stupid test. Even though bootcamp is supposedly "native" there are other drawbacks. I click on firefox and it's open before I release the mouse. Tell you what. Download cinebench r10 for your mac and when you can get it to finish in 35 seconds let me know. Or a score in rednering of 17,500. You'll be lucky to crack 7000 on yours if it's an imac. I also hackintoshed osx into the pc and windows 7 was quicker on many things
But I did notice safari crashed far more often than IE. But you say it can't do it "for shit". 15 seconds to open a browser? I don't even know any 10 year old computers that would be that slow. So your apple hardware has something wrong with it. I can also load 1000 firefox browsers in a test. Can you do that? NOPE . Can close 100 browsers in under 4 seconds. That's enough of the apple kool aide for you, LOL.
Sorry. Microsoft is the LEADER in these technologies. You know why apple waited so long to come up with non ball mouse? Because Microsoft invented the optical mouse and they were trying not to look like copy cats. But now their multi-touch is simply a rip off of the MS coordinate system tech, only they put it on top instead of having sensors on the bottom. But look all the difference mice ms have here. They obviously know what they are doing as they did with the 1st technologies.
Many of the proto mice require the user to have a negative bend to the wrist (palm up & toward the back of the arm).
This is going to lead to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome for users of those mice. This is caused when the nerve running to the hand is pinched as it passes thru the wrist.
What is needed in all mice designs is for the user to have a flat wrist or one with a slightly positive arc (wrist and fingers slightly curved down toward the forearm).
Am I the only one that rests my fingers on the mouse buttons? You notice you gotta hover your fingers above the surface to use these things... they're gonna get sore if you do a lot of computer usage.
it's cool to see Microsoft keeps paying people to do some research, even on pointing device, sadly most of these projects will never hit the store or only at very high price, as it would be too risky to launch mass production :s
It's looks nice. But it is time to think a new way.
I mean, why to use mouse with MultiTouch? It is still a mouse (plus mouse-pad). Why not to use something like "external MultiTouch" pad? without a mouse...
people don't stop and think do they? most people lay their fingers ON their mouse before actually clicking it. What will they do with this stupid device? hover their fingers for hours trying not to accidentally touch the multi touch pad while using it?
It's awkward and stupid like most Monopolysoft products.
so basically its MS's crappy, probably more expensive and wired version of a mighty mouse.
there's really no difference, it's the same as having a scroller ball, but of coarse its made it to youtube because MS made it, and its the best thing they've made in years

microsoft 7? i think its spelled WINDOWS 7 and its shite, its just an eye candy version of XP and its slower, the version of office it comes with is completely different so you can't use it properly, + they haven't stopped virus attacks or crashes.
its actually faster. and you cant stop viruses even macs are getting viruses. macs aren't invulnerable to virus's its just a new software and people are being able to hack the software.
its faster in a miniscule way, there's basically no difference. + macs cant get viruses through the internet or a downloaded file (the 2 biggest ways to get one). so to get a virus on a mac you need to hack your way past the extremely touch security (something MS don't offer) on your own mac because the security of someone else's would make it too hard.
so basicly unless you have all day to hack a your own laptop then you not going to get a virus
so what you're telling me is that they found some great technology to reinvent the wheel by taking a laptop mouse pad and bending it and somehow keeping the functions of that...hmmm..interesting
think about it... it would suck. You'd have to hover you fingers off the mouse or constantly inadvertently set off some random multi touch commands. It sucks. You'd have wrist arthritis within a month.
As cool as this looks.. it's made by Microsoft. If you try to use it like you're supposed to it'll probably freeze your computer and randomly blow up your car.
I had a touchstream lp for years before Apple bought fingerworks for their multi touch technology. Apple has yet to use multitouch well, the best application is the iphone and that barely uses gestures.
Look up the touchstream lp and check out the rich amount of gestures available. once you get used to them you don't want to go back.
multi touch is the future, and you're going to like it so try to keep an open mind.
Neither does MS anymore, they just make the OS's and sell the contracts out to third parties like Dell, Compaq, etc. Apple actually does design the computers in-house.
I know, right? Apple hits it big with iPod, so what does Microsoft do? They blatantly copy it with Zune, and ALSO wait until it was WAY too late to effectively compete with Apple.
If tomorrow apple releases a brick with their logo on it, it will sell like crazy.
Thats the image microsoft wants to have but they can't and will never have again, microsoft's previous fucked-ups with their products have left them with a mediocre company image.
macbook air is shit. lol its simply just for looks, and people who travel alot. thats why you rarely see people with them. (around where I live anyway)
This is all very clever -- and probably very useful for gaming -- but I think I would rather go back to keystroke commands for business apps. Comments like those at 1:45 don't account for people who just want to finish their TPS reports and log out.
yeah i realize that, but now they can have video of it and you using it :) i love how i get negative feedback as if what i am saying is paranoid. they show the friggin camera people
We need far better interfaces than the mouse and keyboard. We need a combination of 3D graphics interface, with vocal, eye sensor, and touch interfaces all working together. We have the PC power now for this, and many of the technologies are all ready on the "shelf" so to speak.
Makes me sick no company has the balls to go up against MS for the next generation operating system, based on this type of platform.
Then again MS is the first GLOBAL CARTEL and monopoly in the OS of PC's.
The mouse sucks. The mouse and keyboard are a DEAD interface with today's PC computing power. Its like hitting your car with a horse whip and saying "getty up" "getty up" and expecting your car to be more productive.
The key board and mouse, a modern day buggy whip, with no buggy or horse, sad.
Great to see a company investing some serious time and resource into what is now the dominant interface for the personal computer. I guess if most of you were around, the mouse would never come out of Xerox PARC. To quote an IT journalist at time Macintosh came out about the Mouse There is no evidence that people want to use these things" - give it some time.

looks like microsoft is getting eaten alive on all the comments. just PUT OUT a touch screen pen and mouse laptop. ok so you have a mouse that works 100 ways. get back to work. why am i looking at apple and mac. OMG. win7 better be touch screen.
you're looking at a mac because you want to, and get your facts straight, win7 IS already touch screen, if you don't believe me go to Cnet's website, there is a video of windows 7 using touch screen. There is some serious closed minded people in this world...

Apple has 91% of $1000+ computers.
I don't see how being over priced is a good thing.
For $1000+ on a PC you could easily find something that is twice as powerful then a mac for the same price. With a far more useful OS.
89.5% Is still complete dominance.. I don't know why you even pointed that out lol :)

ShawnMcCool 2 years ago
let apple or google come up with technology. not m.soft. they lag creativity and future technology direction
chrisivy747 2 years ago
Dude apple didn't come up with crap.. they buy the technology.. Look up Fingerworks...
ShawnMcCool 2 years ago 2
Neither does MS anymore, they just make the OS's and sell the contracts out to third parties like Dell, Compaq, etc. Apple actually does design the computers in-house.
Gothorochimaru 2 years ago
i agree. u remember when they came out with those 3" mini discs that no one used.

Congratulations on once again copying Apple. Even though you took theory from Apple, how come it took so long to produce?
zack929 2 years ago
I know, right? Apple hits it big with iPod, so what does Microsoft do? They blatantly copy it with Zune, and ALSO wait until it was WAY too late to effectively compete with Apple.

If tomorrow apple releases a brick with their logo on it, it will sell like crazy.
Thats the image microsoft wants to have but they can't and will never have again, microsoft's previous fucked-ups with their products have left them with a mediocre company image.

You mean 'a year'.
Apple is terrible overpriced.
I currently have a 625 dollar notebook that's almost as thin and about 4 times as powerful as a top-model Macbook Air, which costs $3000.

macbook air is shit. lol its simply just for looks, and people who travel alot. thats why you rarely see people with them. (around where I live anyway)

This is all very clever -- and probably very useful for gaming -- but I think I would rather go back to keystroke commands for business apps. Comments like those at 1:45 don't account for people who just want to finish their TPS reports and log out.

They can already see everything you view on the internet.
warrkrymez 2 years ago
yeah i realize that, but now they can have video of it and you using it :) i love how i get negative feedback as if what i am saying is paranoid. they show the friggin camera people
smelliottbobelliott 2 years ago
looks gimmicky. might be cool if you could like program drum sounds and just tap the mouse to create a beat.

Then again MS is the first GLOBAL CARTEL and monopoly in the OS of PC's.
putittogether 2 years ago
The mouse sucks. The mouse and keyboard are a DEAD interface with today's PC computing power. Its like hitting your car with a horse whip and saying "getty up" "getty up" and expecting your car to be more productive.
The key board and mouse, a modern day buggy whip, with no buggy or horse, sad.
putittogether 2 years ago
how about we get the fuck out of the mouse era and do some multi-gesture. Like the ones in Minority Report and District 9, to name a few ^^.
exconvictriddick 2 years ago
Nice concepts. I believe the computing experience needs to evolve.

yea... im too lazy to move the mouse from side to side :D
shohamjac 2 years ago 2
Great to see a company investing some serious time and resource into what is now the dominant interface for the personal computer. I guess if most of you were around, the mouse would never come out of Xerox PARC. To quote an IT journalist at time Macintosh came out about the Mouse There is no evidence that people want to use these things" - give it some time.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
looks like microsoft is getting eaten alive on all the comments. just PUT OUT a touch screen pen and mouse laptop. ok so you have a mouse that works 100 ways. get back to work. why am i looking at apple and mac. OMG. win7 better be touch screen.
forbbbi 2 years ago
you're looking at a mac because you want to, and get your facts straight, win7 IS already touch screen, if you don't believe me go to Cnet's website, there is a video of windows 7 using touch screen. There is some serious closed minded people in this world...
