What's keeping this out of the US? Is there something someone can do to speed up the process? Would you entertain having a Loremo manufacturing facility here?
too bad half the car is open like a convertible if it's raining. why do fuel efficient vehicles have to be so weird in other un-related matters like door hinges?
The roof/door situation seems like a gimmick, and a problematic one at that. I would've thought that the German car industry would've learned its lesson from previous such experiments like the Isetta, Messerschmitt and Heinkel, with their front or top-opening doors. Too much effort is required to open and close them, they're awkward to get in and out of, and they can be disastrous in a crash, not to mention allowing rain into the cabin. A BAD idea in an otherwise very promising new car.
It isn't a gimmick. It was impossible to use typical doors with this light-weight design without sacrificing the safety of it. They used a design similar to those used in formula 1 cars, which enables it to be both incredibly safe (more so than a regular car) and incredibly light-weight, which is important for speed and mileage.
"It isn't a gimmick. It was impossible to use typical doors with this light-weight design without sacrificing the safety of it."
But of course it DOES sacrifice safety. A significant percentage of serious auto accidents involve cars being overturned. How would a person get out of this car if it were on its roof? They couldn't. Also, Formula One cars have automatic Halon fire suppression systems, fuel cells, and wreckers and ambulances that can respond in seconds. The Loremo has none of these.
You can still roll down a window and crawl out if the car overturns. Besides, a small car like this that is so low to the ground is VERY unlikely to roll over.
"You can still roll down a window and crawl out if the car overturns. Besides, a small car like this that is so low to the ground is VERY unlikely to roll over."
First, the Loremo's side windows are fixed; they don't roll down.
Second, a low CoG only helps prevent roll-over as a function of _mass_ resisting inertia. A low-mass car like the Loremo would be no less likely to roll over than a small sportscar like an MG Midget or Sprite, which WILL roll over, given enough of a push.
American probably will think this car is gay anyways and redicule it because it's not a monster that does 0-60 in 0.5 seconds with a top speed of 300mph. Just like they redicule the Prius even though it's an excellent and very environment friendly car.
What I wonder is though.. how will this system work during a frontal collision? Wouldn't it fold open when exposed to high force?
When I lived in Nederland, I saw plenty of fat people; all that dairy.
"Just like they redicule the Prius"
With about 700,000 sold here since they were first made available in 2000, the Prius is one of the best-selling imported cars in America. In fact, more Priuses have been sold in the US than in all of the EU.
I'm wondering what happens if the 'roof-door' won't close for some reason; and the girl gets in and out pretty well; but the average person doing this several times a day??? I'm 6'2"; and I have a 2-door car which is a little difficult to get in and out of due to back problems/knee problems.. when I read if one could get in and out of a bath tub fairly easy, then the car would not be a problem; I thought that would delete alot of folks from getting this car... change the way we get in please!
This car is the business! Small? Yes. But do we need a huge car to commute in? No. Regarding the tyre size; contact patch has little or no bearing on grip. Weight of the car and coefficient of friction in the rubber matters most.
When it comes to weight of the car, while it would help with grip, at the same time it would give the car more inertia. And supposedly the design of the car creates a suction effect under the car when traveling at high speeds.
That car is really tiny, and they do everything they can to keep from showing it. If you're 5'6" then it is probably not a problem. The average 17 year old US man will not be comfortable in it. And the shoulder room is ridiculously small. I think a Cessna 150 has more shoulder room.
The dutch (in my understanding) have been involved with the production of this car in cooperation with the german team who were the main creators.
The dutch are the tallest people in the world on average, and I doubt that, if the dutch were involved, they wouldn't have noticed that it was too cramped.
But just look at those thin wheels ! Lack of friction is one of the main consumption-reduction factors here. Take a sharp corner and you'll be looking at buggering the car...
I'm guessing she makes it look easy because she's done it before and she's small. I really like the car concept but I'm wondering if a more conventional side door isn't better
Indeed, she done it before because she is part of the Loremo staff. But her size is a bit above-average (according to our standards), that's why we chose her for that video.
i am loving this car but it won't be out till 2009 and won't be available in the states till 2010. In that time who knows how many design changes they're gonna do
are you sure this will be available in the states in 2010? I heard it'll only cost $13,000..do you know if this is accurate? If it is I would be first in line to buy this baby!

So.... what happens after a crash when the front end is all mangled? A miniskirt would be the least of her worries.

(ps: safety concerns? alway have a windshield hammer in your car, regardless of the configuration, wether you get overturned or hit the water.)

Next autoshow in my vincinity, im stopping by the loremo booth. I really like this car and would certainly buy it!!
as far as the entry goes: i think it's cool, and absolutely dont mind the step. I would like to see how I fit though ( i'm 6'5 and slim)
As far as marketing the car in the US? That would require changing the mentality of bigger is better (as far as car size and body "size")
I hope to see many of these on the road!

How should you roll over, when you can only drive 60 miles/hour ;)

I'm wondering that too. Although, I suppose folding open is actually better than crushing in on top of you.

I'm quite sure Loremo would have already addressed that issue. Parts of Europe gets plenty of rain.
