I dealt with this constantly when I taught Special Ed. I think TV and video games are the worst part of the problem, and the most avoidable as well. Kids with ODD (or ADHD or OCD or Autism) don't take well to change. Routines are very important for kids regardless. If you're going to spring a change on the kid, you need to break down the task.
Negative, thoughtless comments drive me crazy! The bottom line people, is different kids need different approaches to discipline. It doesn't matter what you label them. A diagnosis is a label put to a group of symptoms. It makes it easier for parents to find the right "treatment" for their child. This program works for kids that have symptoms that happen to fall under the classification of odd.
O!M!G!!! I have been using your program for a day and a half with my five year old daughter Ruby and it has made an enormousr impact already!! I haven't even finished revising the lists!! Holy cow! Thank you sooooooo much!!!!!!
@Thecutevegan = Anything I can do to help you get the system off the ground, let me know. I'm happy to help you get this moving along with your little one! Just send me a message and I'll give you my email address. And thanks for the comment about "negative remarks". I'm sometimes surprised at how many negative nellies there are out there in the world.
I really think these labels of "disorders" are not helpful. Especially when people start seeing it as something the child "has". It's just a state that the child in in. Just because a child is exceptionally defiant doesn't mean they have a disorder.... and why "disorder". If it was something positive then it would be called a talent. I'll call this Exceptionally Willful Talent. EWT. Kids who are labelled ODD are actually EWT. Good videos!
Thanks for theseWONDERFUL videos!!! We are starting tomorrow (fingers crossed)... What do you suggest doing for the summer months when they arent in school and are spending all day at home? My daughter is 11 and starting middle school and I'm hoping for a much better school year than we had last year...Thanks again :)
What happens when the 'reward' system is removed or outgrown? Teaching a child to behave from external motivations (rewards and credits) rather than internal motivations (because its the right thing to do) can have consequences later. If your child is faced with a challenging situation 'outside' the home without your influence will she know how to respond correctly without the immediate satisfaction of a tangible reward? Or will she choose wrongly because she was never taught to self motivate?
Big thanks I only stated the system yesterday and already have seen an improvement! I agree its very emotional seeing your child in so much emotional pain let alone the pain it causes us...
thank you! i'm not a parent alothough i'm a teacher who is dealing with a child with a defiant disorder. your links to other professional resources have been helpful. to all of you out there whoa re skeptic of ODD... well its real and yes it does exist. And no i'm not an advocate for medication, but i'm an advocate of supporting the rights of children who require the support of adults. everyone needs the basic social/emotional skills to cope in life and it is up to adults to help children!!!
@kkg76 = Thank you for the positive response! Yes, kids need support from adults! Yes! Yes! Yes! And that's what this system is about. Supporting kids without medicating them.
There's NO such thing as ODD. Disciplining a child who acts unruly is one thing, but when parent's start medicating their children for a "disorder" that is invented out of thin air, we have problems.
ODD is the mark of a brilliant strong individual. It should not be drugged out of existence. The slave masters want to take over the planet, and if you oppose that you will be declared as having ODD. This is a man-made disease promulgated by a society that thinks you can "garden" people like robots to be exactly what you want them to be. Those with ODD see clearly through this B.S. and that's why they OPPOSE you. I think its a shame how we raise our children these days.
@vutEwa You're right, this is just another concocted "disorder" invented by the progressive libtards/ the useful idiots to render anyone who opposes their Marxist ideology as a slave. This is PURE UTTERLY BS!!!!! The APA has been removing disorders form their DSM and inventing disoirders for the DSM based on money and poltics and not scientific objectivity since at least the 70s. Gone is the age of critical thinkers and that's how the progressives want it.
@funk7000 you idiot, theses disorders are made up for the pure purpose of an "economic agenda" to make money, create jobs for people who create dangerous medication. Republicans are the blame for labeling disorders and ignoring the fact that people are not just consumers, they are intuitive beings with souls. Republicans have no critical thinkging skills, all they care about is killing the environment, torturing animals for money and laughing about poverty. Oh yea, such critical thinking.
how about when you live w/ your meddling mother, you are 40 y/o & YOU are the parent??? i'm the boss, grandma is just the enforcer? she likes to just butt in and take over...i hate it. any suggestions?
how old is your daughter? mine's almost 8. been driving me batty since about 2 1/2 y/o. i still blame myself for this because i'm awfully feisty myself... what do u think of this influence?
Dear Jacki Congratulations. A reward system for things on top or outside o the basics of love, food comfort, it a great system. In fact this approach should be used by parents in general. Just form watching this introduction I am impressed with your program. I will watch the rest of you videos, for sure and more that once.
I found that when I reviewed my behavior as a kid, I learned much more quickly that anticipated. My system was a very simple 3 step process, all of which were subsequently followed by a hug + the natural consequences it brought me.
1)Verbal Discipline
2)Grounding from every activity I enjoyed.
3)An Ass whipping + Grounding.
You'd be surprised at how effective these 3 simple steps can be... It just takes a bit of effort and maturity to employ.

I'm very interested at your videos. I just found out about the term ODD while researching for information regarding my son's behavior. Most of the symptoms match many of his behavior. In addition, he has been diagnosed with autism as well. I'm very keen to try your program actually. Thank you again for posting this information.
Was ODD something your daughter was born with or is it a learned behavior problem? I guess I was fortunate to have kids who were not predisposed for hostility or anger. None of us want to go from our PJs to street clothes, even as adults, and the need to reward a child for normal behavior could cause them problems when they grow up. Is ODD something that will eventually go away? Finding the cause of ODD would be big part of the solution...do you agree?
Hi Scotty, one of the root causes (as far as I could) tell, was my daugthers inability to process certain forms of information. As I stated in this video, she had great difficulty in "swithching gears". Going from one activity to another, was an immense challenge for her and would result in a meltdown as her thought processes came to an abrupt halt. I was able to solve the problem using this system I am explaining. Thanks for the question!

What do you think of Dr Ross Greene's book THE EXPLOSIVE CHILD?
It really made a difference in the life of me and my ADD/ODD child.
Thanks you so much for posting the information.
