@MrDim09 i ride motorised bikes. yes they are dangerous. as long as people do NOT override the bike itself or ride beyond their capabilities, unless a car or truck is involved, theyd be fine
Why destroy it? Why not just show some old ones that have been running for years or just put it through its paces and show why people liked it. You didn't drop the other bikes. You're completely missing the point. The appeal of the bike is it's simplicity and dependability. Nobody in their right mind would put cooking oil in it or drop it 22 meters. This segment started out OK, but got ridiculous in a hurry.
By their standards, the VW Beetle is the best car of all time because it was built for over almost 60 years and sold 21 million units. Pff, what a crock of bullshit. John Britten's V1000 should be in 1st place in this list.
I was trying to fix up an old mustang, but I now see that will cost too much. However I still need transportaion to school. I need a cheap affordable motorcycle. Id love a Ural motorcycle without the side car but those are 8grand. Any suggestion?
@Mauser2012 The Scooters like Yamaha Zuma or Aprilia Sportcity are very dependable and cheap. For a dependable and cheap motorcycle the Suzuki GZ250 gets 65 mpg and will go 70 mph but you will get wet in the rain and they are dangerous on wet pavement. I'd go for a cheap car if I only had one vehicle.
@dkw12002 thanks for the great info, but do yoy have an estimated cost of a Suzuki GZ250 new and used?. I really love this bike now, great suggestion.
@Mauser2012 I owned a new 2007 then a 2009 GZ250. I needed to use the interstate, so I traded for a Vulcan 500. The GZ has been around essentially unchanged for many years, so there should be plenty of used ones. The new 2007 was $4306 out the door, plus $150/yr for ins. and $46 for a motorcycle license. I traded that one in a year later for the 2009 and that trade cost me $1800. Then recently I traded for the 500 for $3021. I recently bought an '09 Aprilia 50 cc. scooter $1750 out the door.
That was the dumbest vidieo I have ever seen. We already know it is a undestructable bike, just ask millions of people, why destroy a clean bike. Stupid T.V. wankers with there hpye.
When Boorman pushed it off the roof there was a cable attached. I guess they did the filmed drop separately so that the bike would land wheels-first. Front wheel took the brunt of it, as a result it's well bent. I'd like to see one where this bike landed on its side or upside down.
i have a honda cub c70 cdi model i upgraded it wif some parts from ex5 high power engine parts n now i have a 100cc 4 stroke engine with 4 speed automatic gearbox
Ive had 1000cc bikes ,motorcrossers ,harleys etc etc but there is nothing as comforting to ride around london or down a dark country road than the cub ...you just know your gonna get there !
in my country (malaysia), this is the most wanted bike for the teenager, known as the EX5 model, not only bcoz it cheap and reliable, but also fun to race (especially with the heavy traffic on the road), for 1km race, it can achive top speed of 140 km/h,not bad for a small bike to go that fast :) easy to wheelie too.. (try search 'mat rempit' or 'rempit' or 'cub prix')
@demonezra 140 km/hr, no way. Stop bullshitting dude, this is an amazing bike, but no way as you describe it. I agree about this being the greatest bike but racing, 140km/hr, that's just conjuring facts up.
@Knickknack93 if u talk about ur grandpa honda c70 yep u must be rite about those accurate crap u talking about but man i talk about full mod honda ex5 set for 1km race..
and 1 more thing is,
if u dont like 'mat rempit' just stay home read ur books n sleep with ur mama, than grandpa will send u to school with his c70 but than langgar lori and pegi mampos with u guys.. and than we live happily ever after..
@demonezra lol. go back to school and learn proper english. i dont sleep with my grandpa or mom and ride ex5. i do ride ex5. but only to the stores and such. no rempit and such. and yeah, i do hate mat rempit so much. i really wish that they would all die. oh by the way, racing straight lines are for pussies. 1km? come on. pure bike performance are tested on the track. not on the fucking road. u die, u die alone with nothing but disgrace. and stop making malaysia look bad.
@Knickknack93 pure bike performance test on track? alamak what a lame moron r u?? nak sprint honda cub 1km pon nk masuk track ker.. racing straight line for pussy?? alo mangkuk org xde konek mcm ko ni je yang race ikut race pakai prosedur.. aku klu eksiden pon mati senyumlaaa langgar org macm ko ni
As much as it pisses off the Pacific Drive posers - I couldn't agree more with this choice..... and yep..... some really nice people do ride them.... I have never been on one..... not yet anyhow.... I salute you Mr Honda - Pure Genius!
Which bunch of knob 'eds put this shit together ? Sam Browne belt wearers and the type of motorcyclist who wears mock 'dirty leathers'/ wallet on a long chain in the back pocket on their Viragos (you know the sort), or the ones who are the regulars down Hein Gerick in their shit cheep leathers on something that's fat to big and fast for them.
I hated the way they treated that little motorcycle. Everything they did was just stupid. I wish I could buy a new one in the USA. I don't want to buy anything from Lifan though they do make good looking replicas. I don't know if the Lifans would be as good. I've seen some cheap scooters from China and when they break after 1500 miles they're toast. No way to get parts to fix them. The Chinese metals are inferior. All independent Chinese companies cut as many quality corners as they can. Too bad
@MrMoneyHelper - SYM sells the Symba, which is based on the Cub's design. Sadly, I'm a little suspicious of SYM's marketing strategy as the bike hasn't been selling well here. BTW SYM is Taiwanese not Chinese. Being that SYM built Hondas under contract should be a sign that the quality is decent. I would avoid any FLY scooter Scout models however. While it retains the style of the Cub, the quality is inferior and FLY's bikes are from mainland China!
@thespeez Thanks for the information. Right now I'm using a Tanaka 32.4 cc motor on my bicycle. No insurance or registration fees and it can be parked anywhere. It's just not as fast as a regular motor scooter or SYM Cub replica.
But man, this Discovery Channel show is stupid. They try to seem educational but it is more like the Three Stooges with water coming out of a light socket.
I had an ancient 90cc Super Cub when I lived in Japan a couple years. Man I loved that bike. Three speed transmission but 1st gear was only ever needed for starting off uphill with a passenger or going up extreme crazy hills. So effectively it was a 2-speed most of the time, yet it had as much takeoff as most cars and enough top end to exceed the speed limit (50 km/hr) by 10 km/hr same as all the cars were doing. A very flexible engine. Spent many hours putting around the mountains on that bike.
That bike supposedly had an auto clutch, but I'm not sure it worked right, compared to a later 50cc Cub I tried. Basically it was like no clutch... I just pressed the shift lever a bit and then let off the gas and at some equilibrium point it would go CLUNK and pop into the other gear. It was crude but a great feeling making that one shift from "low" into "high" and then giving it gas again. I guess that old bike was from about 1970; I found it forgotten in the back room of a convenience store.
The gas tank was rusty and the carb gummed terrible but I shook gravel in the gas tank and cleaned out the carb and set the timing by some improvised method with no reference books. Oh, one time I was riding up the Shikoku Karst or Tengu Plateau with a passenger, and the engine overheated to the point where it lost all power. I guess the piston expanded that tight in the cylinder, but it never seized completely. Happened 3 times before we got to the top.
Sure wish I had that little bike now, though it would be a lot less useful on American roads. The roads in Japan are so narrow and winding and lined with dangerous cliffs and guard-rail-less bridges and steel lamp poles 4 inches off the traffic lane... I swear 60 km/hr there felt at least as fast as 60 miles/hr here. But say, this "Discovery Channel" program sucks... so-called experts full of BS, and why that bike falls perfectly level after after starting off with a tumble at the top? Fake!
@Fuzzybeanerizer "it would be a lot less useful on American roads." Well I'm sure the 125CC variant is useful for our roads here since it can go near 65mph which is good enough. What really bugs me though is the fact that they sell the Wave (same thing as the cub but with steel tubes instead of stamped sheet metal)
In Mexico but not in the United states? Hmm maybe there is a way I can hop the border down there and bring one home? hahaha.
@EpiDemic117 I agree, a 125cc Cub or a similar bike made by anybody with an engine in the 125cc to 175cc class would be awesome. I was just thinking how odd it was that Honda tried to market the 70cc version in the U.S. for many years while selling 90cc versions in Japan. I mean, Americans are like big and fat and want to go fast on our wider better roads... what were they thinking? And I was puzzled by the Chinese scooters imported in 527 variations, even crazy 3-wheelers, but no Cub clones
@Fuzzybeanerizer Yeah I am quite frustrated with that to. I almost bought a passport till I decided to purchase a Yamaha XJ750 instead. I have 750 CC's to play with but honestly. I'd like to have a small cub for utilitarian purposed. The 750 is just for play time.
@EpiDemic117 Well finally I did just recently finally happen to type in the right search words and stumble across the Taiwanese-made SYM "Symba" motorcycle and the Chinese-made Fly Scooters "Scout" motorcycle, both close copies of the Honda Super Cub. Not sure if they are actually economical to purchase vs. a used Passport or CT-90, but I'm glad to see them finally and hope they are successful. If I had more money and/or there was a dealer nearby I might buy one. But why's Honda so cruel to us?
@Fuzzybeanerizer Yeah I was well aware of the Symba and the scout from Fly scooters. Two Cub clones. But I'm really picky and anal about certain products and i'd much rather buy it under the Honda brand Name since it's made under tight quality control and Better standards. And as a plus they pretty much invented it. But even so they sell Scooters here such as the PCX and Elite which I guess is more of a US Urban market anyways with it's Easy to use CVT.
@Fuzzybeanerizer But the cub fills the gap between scooter and Motorcycle since it has traits from both. Something I like to look at. It has the easy step through frame, and Motorcycle like features.
@Fuzzybeanerizer But Even so I guess back in the 70's and 80's there was a 90cc variant called the Trail 90 (we have one) Which i think sold alot better in the United states because it was more focused around fishermen, hunters, and people who like to camp. But it still is basically A honda cub with a different name and couple other modifications. They really are enjoyable to ride and are so damn simple to use! I LOVE these things!
@EpiDemic117 Yeah, I've got a couple different versions of the Trail 90, one is really old with the push-rod engine. Great bikes, but for practical purposes I really would prefer the low exhaust and the leg shield. Lots of people laugh at the Cub as a "girl's motorcycle" but the step-through design is there for a purpose. Lots of people in Japan had huge boxes mounted on the rear, like large steel coolers or something, maybe 2 feet wide + and 18 inches high, and you can't swing a leg over that.
@EpiDemic117 The leg shield looks funny to Americans, but if you're at work and it starts raining and you got to go home it is nice not to have dog shit and squirrel guts and trucker spit misted all over your clothing. Wet from direct rain I can deal with, but yuck from the road is nasty. I can't understand the attitude of many Americans that a motorcycle that is actually useful to get to work with or to carry something on is somehow "sissy." Toys are fun, but to me a Super Cub is a real bike.
@nrejack "It's a shame they're not available in the USA." I KNOW DUDE! isn't that frustrating? The fact taht this bulletprrof fuel sipping product is sold EVERYWHERE but the united states. What gives?
The HONDA MB5 was a great, 2 stroke 50cc screamer! Had one back in the 80's, and it was a blast to ride! Once you hit the powerband, the thing would pull like hell for a 50cc bike.
You should see we malaysians are mostly poor ppl so a transportation such as the honda cub is the least they an afford and these ppl especially scrap dealers you how they carry one big fridge at the back of the bike while balancing riding on the streets, really dangerous but yet some how they manage to carry it
I`ve got a V reg, Kick start model, I nearly got 60 mph! down a steep hill on it, And it out ran my brothers chinese 125cc bike(up to 45 mph on a flat road) Very reliable engine, Not missed a beat in over 4000 miles, But I`ve found three faults with the machine, 1. You seem to get a lot of puntures (I`ve had 8 in one year) 2. the rear axle sleeve can give problems (replaced twice in 7 months)3. rust! A large plate had to be welded under the seat to get the bike though a recent m.o.t.
It's not supposed to be pretty or fast. It's supposed to be a form of transportation, pure and simple. Function > form. Plus, they've sold over 60 million, so they must be doing something right.
Greatest motorcycle ever? I don't even consider this scooter a motorcycle. It may have been the most popular scooter ever, greatest motorcycle ever? nah
@EpiDemic117 That thing will never be "the greatest motorcycle ever" to me. It may be very popular, capable, and many other things. There are also many things it will never be when I think about great motorcycles. 1 cylinder, 50 cc. underpowered it the first thing I think of. ANY decent bike will take curves at 50 to 70 mph, not the cub. I weigh 230 pounds, how great do u think that is going up a steep mountain with a 200 pound passenger?
@clintonearlwalker if u have been to thailand or vietnam. this cub is like a minivan. capable of ferrying a family dad mom. 3 kids with no problems. cubs is now used as a fast means of transport in traffic congested areas like i mention. A hayabusa got difficulty cutting traffic unless highways
@Cumified Where I live in the United States, there are 0 Honda cubs, I don't think I've ever seen one. I realize in congested Asian countries they are used as utility vehicles, that does not make them "great" motorcycles from my point of view. The smallest Honda I've ever had was an SL 70 when I was a kid. I currently ride GL 1500 Goldwing. The Honda cub may be many things to many people, but it will never be the greatest motorcycle ever to me.
Greatest ever motorcycle, yeah right. Cheap and economic maybe. A 50cc cub would never reach 50mph even if it was downhill and a hurricane force wind behind it. Pouring cooking oil in the engine and dropping it from a crane and then starting it does not prove that it's the only bike that can withstand this kind of abuse. This TV series always ended up with the most crap as the winner of the greatest ever.
Can I buy the destroyed Cub?
Just put new wheels and is just as new!!

What a cop out.
Just because millions of low income people bought it to ride to work and back that doesn't make it the best bike in the world.

Hello,
I was trying to fix up an old mustang, but I now see that will cost too much. However I still need transportaion to school. I need a cheap affordable motorcycle. Id love a Ural motorcycle without the side car but those are 8grand. Any suggestion?

Mauser2012 1 year ago
@Mauser2012 The Scooters like Yamaha Zuma or Aprilia Sportcity are very dependable and cheap. For a dependable and cheap motorcycle the Suzuki GZ250 gets 65 mpg and will go 70 mph but you will get wet in the rain and they are dangerous on wet pavement. I'd go for a cheap car if I only had one vehicle.
dkw12002 1 year ago
@dkw12002 thanks for the great info, but do yoy have an estimated cost of a Suzuki GZ250 new and used?. I really love this bike now, great suggestion.
Mauser2012 1 year ago
@Mauser2012 I owned a new 2007 then a 2009 GZ250. I needed to use the interstate, so I traded for a Vulcan 500. The GZ has been around essentially unchanged for many years, so there should be plenty of used ones. The new 2007 was $4306 out the door, plus $150/yr for ins. and $46 for a motorcycle license. I traded that one in a year later for the 2009 and that trade cost me $1800. Then recently I traded for the 500 for $3021. I recently bought an '09 Aprilia 50 cc. scooter $1750 out the door.

When Boorman pushed it off the roof there was a cable attached. I guess they did the filmed drop separately so that the bike would land wheels-first. Front wheel took the brunt of it, as a result it's well bent. I'd like to see one where this bike landed on its side or upside down.

in my country (malaysia), this is the most wanted bike for the teenager, known as the EX5 model, not only bcoz it cheap and reliable, but also fun to race (especially with the heavy traffic on the road), for 1km race, it can achive top speed of 140 km/h,not bad for a small bike to go that fast :) easy to wheelie too.. (try search 'mat rempit' or 'rempit' or 'cub prix')
demonezra 1 year ago 30
@demonezra 140 km/hr, no way. Stop bullshitting dude, this is an amazing bike, but no way as you describe it. I agree about this being the greatest bike but racing, 140km/hr, that's just conjuring facts up.
salman06p0020 1 year ago
@salman06p0020 yes u rite, but after some mod and all that, 140 kmh on that kind of bike.. man i tell u we ride it like superman
demonezra 1 year ago
@salman06p0020 most of the cubs have 140 km/h meter.
so when they raced the bikes, they reached the top speed which is 140km/h.
but, the meter is not accurate and if u compare it to superbikes or any other bikes,
the cub is reaching 120 while the superbike would only go 90 - 100 km/h
so these 'mat rempit' really do messed up the facts and still like to brag about it.
and 1 more thing is,
these 'mat rempit' are scumbags, trouble makers, vain and many more.
btw , i live in malaysia too.

Too bad
MrMoneyHelper 1 year ago 2
@MrMoneyHelper Put it this way there's a 6 month old Chinese scooter in my college. It's got about 3x more rust on it than my 7 year old Suzuki.
lukerobin01 1 year ago 2
@MrMoneyHelper - SYM sells the Symba, which is based on the Cub's design. Sadly, I'm a little suspicious of SYM's marketing strategy as the bike hasn't been selling well here. BTW SYM is Taiwanese not Chinese. Being that SYM built Hondas under contract should be a sign that the quality is decent. I would avoid any FLY scooter Scout models however. While it retains the style of the Cub, the quality is inferior and FLY's bikes are from mainland China!
thespeez 10 months ago
@thespeez Thanks for the information. Right now I'm using a Tanaka 32.4 cc motor on my bicycle. No insurance or registration fees and it can be parked anywhere. It's just not as fast as a regular motor scooter or SYM Cub replica.

Fuzzybeanerizer 1 year ago
That bike supposedly had an auto clutch, but I'm not sure it worked right, compared to a later 50cc Cub I tried. Basically it was like no clutch... I just pressed the shift lever a bit and then let off the gas and at some equilibrium point it would go CLUNK and pop into the other gear. It was crude but a great feeling making that one shift from "low" into "high" and then giving it gas again. I guess that old bike was from about 1970; I found it forgotten in the back room of a convenience store.
Fuzzybeanerizer 1 year ago
The gas tank was rusty and the carb gummed terrible but I shook gravel in the gas tank and cleaned out the carb and set the timing by some improvised method with no reference books. Oh, one time I was riding up the Shikoku Karst or Tengu Plateau with a passenger, and the engine overheated to the point where it lost all power. I guess the piston expanded that tight in the cylinder, but it never seized completely. Happened 3 times before we got to the top.
Fuzzybeanerizer 1 year ago
Sure wish I had that little bike now, though it would be a lot less useful on American roads. The roads in Japan are so narrow and winding and lined with dangerous cliffs and guard-rail-less bridges and steel lamp poles 4 inches off the traffic lane... I swear 60 km/hr there felt at least as fast as 60 miles/hr here. But say, this "Discovery Channel" program sucks... so-called experts full of BS, and why that bike falls perfectly level after after starting off with a tumble at the top? Fake!
Fuzzybeanerizer 1 year ago
@Fuzzybeanerizer "it would be a lot less useful on American roads." Well I'm sure the 125CC variant is useful for our roads here since it can go near 65mph which is good enough. What really bugs me though is the fact that they sell the Wave (same thing as the cub but with steel tubes instead of stamped sheet metal)
In Mexico but not in the United states? Hmm maybe there is a way I can hop the border down there and bring one home? hahaha.
EpiDemic117 1 year ago
@EpiDemic117 I agree, a 125cc Cub or a similar bike made by anybody with an engine in the 125cc to 175cc class would be awesome. I was just thinking how odd it was that Honda tried to market the 70cc version in the U.S. for many years while selling 90cc versions in Japan. I mean, Americans are like big and fat and want to go fast on our wider better roads... what were they thinking? And I was puzzled by the Chinese scooters imported in 527 variations, even crazy 3-wheelers, but no Cub clones
Fuzzybeanerizer 1 year ago
@Fuzzybeanerizer Yeah I am quite frustrated with that to. I almost bought a passport till I decided to purchase a Yamaha XJ750 instead. I have 750 CC's to play with but honestly. I'd like to have a small cub for utilitarian purposed. The 750 is just for play time.
EpiDemic117 1 year ago
@EpiDemic117 Well finally I did just recently finally happen to type in the right search words and stumble across the Taiwanese-made SYM "Symba" motorcycle and the Chinese-made Fly Scooters "Scout" motorcycle, both close copies of the Honda Super Cub. Not sure if they are actually economical to purchase vs. a used Passport or CT-90, but I'm glad to see them finally and hope they are successful. If I had more money and/or there was a dealer nearby I might buy one. But why's Honda so cruel to us?
Fuzzybeanerizer 1 year ago
@Fuzzybeanerizer Yeah I was well aware of the Symba and the scout from Fly scooters. Two Cub clones. But I'm really picky and anal about certain products and i'd much rather buy it under the Honda brand Name since it's made under tight quality control and Better standards. And as a plus they pretty much invented it. But even so they sell Scooters here such as the PCX and Elite which I guess is more of a US Urban market anyways with it's Easy to use CVT.
EpiDemic117 1 year ago
@Fuzzybeanerizer But the cub fills the gap between scooter and Motorcycle since it has traits from both. Something I like to look at. It has the easy step through frame, and Motorcycle like features.
EpiDemic117 1 year ago
@Fuzzybeanerizer But Even so I guess back in the 70's and 80's there was a 90cc variant called the Trail 90 (we have one) Which i think sold alot better in the United states because it was more focused around fishermen, hunters, and people who like to camp. But it still is basically A honda cub with a different name and couple other modifications. They really are enjoyable to ride and are so damn simple to use! I LOVE these things!
EpiDemic117 1 year ago
@EpiDemic117 Yeah, I've got a couple different versions of the Trail 90, one is really old with the push-rod engine. Great bikes, but for practical purposes I really would prefer the low exhaust and the leg shield. Lots of people laugh at the Cub as a "girl's motorcycle" but the step-through design is there for a purpose. Lots of people in Japan had huge boxes mounted on the rear, like large steel coolers or something, maybe 2 feet wide + and 18 inches high, and you can't swing a leg over that.
Fuzzybeanerizer 1 year ago
@EpiDemic117 The leg shield looks funny to Americans, but if you're at work and it starts raining and you got to go home it is nice not to have dog shit and squirrel guts and trucker spit misted all over your clothing. Wet from direct rain I can deal with, but yuck from the road is nasty. I can't understand the attitude of many Americans that a motorcycle that is actually useful to get to work with or to carry something on is somehow "sissy." Toys are fun, but to me a Super Cub is a real bike.
Fuzzybeanerizer 1 year ago
can i ride one of these on the streets with just a class c drivers license?

Cumified 1 year ago
@Cumified Where I live in the United States, there are 0 Honda cubs, I don't think I've ever seen one. I realize in congested Asian countries they are used as utility vehicles, that does not make them "great" motorcycles from my point of view. The smallest Honda I've ever had was an SL 70 when I was a kid. I currently ride GL 1500 Goldwing. The Honda cub may be many things to many people, but it will never be the greatest motorcycle ever to me.
clintonearlwalker 1 year ago
Greatest ever motorcycle, yeah right. Cheap and economic maybe. A 50cc cub would never reach 50mph even if it was downhill and a hurricane force wind behind it. Pouring cooking oil in the engine and dropping it from a crane and then starting it does not prove that it's the only bike that can withstand this kind of abuse. This TV series always ended up with the most crap as the winner of the greatest ever.
