I've been using Ubuntu for 4 years now, but haven't kept up with the Linux world. Anyone can tell me why Mint is at the top of the distro list right now?
They screwed the Mint 12 up for users with an intel chipset. The gui will be hidden, and there is a manual workarround, but still very irritating to have to mess with that. They should fix the distro images asap.
@andre2pi It's not really a review. He's used Mint before and he's just telling us the some of the likes and dislikes. Like anyone who has been using linux, there's not much to review because you already know what to expect. This video is NOT for viewers to are looking to try out linux for the first time. It's for experienced users who just want to know a few factors which helps them decide whether to use it or not.
please state your problems you have with linux mint12. the distro is community driven & they do listen. you might want to take a whack at cinnamon though ^_^
I really recommend u guys to look at Pinguy OS 11.10. Its (imo) the best gnome shells "remix" out there so far, and if looks and feels a lot like gnome2. heres a screenshot of my desktop
@MetalxShredder600 the really kool thing about pinguy is that they have a really full version with lots of apps, and a mini version(what i use) so u can install what u want and not have to uninstall all the crap u dont want
@TheMeanEYE what do you mean shitload of RAM and CPU . mine works perfectly. like the whole Ubuntu it's resource efficient. To appreciate you'll have to actually use it for work rather testing . I know people who were satisfied with Vista because they used for actual work(but that's extreme.).
@Kawiatube I am using it since the Ubuntu was released and speaking from personal experience. 3D version of unity along with compiz eats around 100MB, compared to 2D version and gnome2 panel that's 2-5x more. Not to mention memory leaks. After a few day or so moving windows becomes really choppy and only way to restore expected behavior is to restart Unity.
Having Qt and Mono installed by default (but removing Samba) is really not resource efficient. Huge libraries for shell and music player.
I really wish Mint would stick to the one bar system. I know they might not have had a lot of wiggle room with Gnome Shell and whatnot but it would be nice if they were the last distro to support that. Maybe the Mate shit will take off and they'll do that as its own spin? That's be cool.
At first I was really looking forward to Mate but I think they ruined it. I would be really happy if they only forked gnome-panel, but they forked everything. Including calculator, VFS, GIO, panel, and other. Anything that had Gnome word in it, has been forked. In my opinion that is a bad decision, because team of 4 people can't maintain all that and develop new features.
Gnome panel, the thing everyone is missing, is just a task manager and main menu, no need for the rest of the things.
I agree, this release is not their best. Their menu sucks because you cant search and install packages from their menu. I hear many people are moving to Pinguy OS or Debian. Gnome 3 is still pretty new so I'm sure Mint is having a difficult time making everything work well.
Haha, that's what I like about your reviews. You don't kiss ass and try to make the distro out to something its not. You tell everyone exactly whats up. What you like, what you hate, improvements? All that good stuff. Im surprised any linux distros haven't hired you on there team just to review stuff in general.....or have they? haha.
@MonkeyZazu2 if they aint paying me, then i can just say what i want without bias crap, waste of time trying to please everyone, open source stuff can suck too, but many open source nuthugger wont like to admit that becuz they fear their viewers unsubing them =D
@gotbletu LOL, I'm actually using Arch Linux + KDE 4.7.4 and Fedora 16 with Gnome-Shells (sic). I use Slackware on and off but as I got less time in day to day life I got lazy, lol.
when Gnome 3/ Shell and Unity came out I felt like I was in limbo as to what environment I was going to use long term because both were so different from gnome 2 but after trying out both i find that stock gnome 3/shell with docky and gnome Do is perfect seems more finished than unity haven't experienced any crashes and little features like the chat is very very useful!! i would recommend this set up I have to anyone.
@blackoutworm I used to think that too, but the latest KDE is quite snappy and responsive, at least that's the case on my machine. It's pretty flexible as well. I've used xfce before, especially on low end machines, but for now, I'm happy with KDE. A year ago, I would have never considered it. I've put two panels on my desktop, and arranged everything to resemble the old Gnome 2.x desktop I've been using for years.
@waynefoutz yea most ppl think that about KDE, usually the people that donno how to use it properly, but KDE is actually very good, just too bad Kubuntu is a bad distro with many crap by default, so that reflects on KDE becuz thats usually the distro ppl use when they pick KDE
This was my last ditch effort with Gnome-shell. I used this for two days and found it to be a chaotic mess. Switched to KDE and probably will never look back at Gnome again.
I tried it for while and I got my cpu going to 100% sometimes. Its a bit laggy and feels like an Alpha stuff. By other hand, Mint 10 or Kubuntu now are a lot better. The Debian Mint is good, but from time to time you need to wipe it out from your system due to somekind of weird bug...
Linux Mint 11 was buggy, 12 also. I still use Mint 10 with latest kernel and other stuff that i just added in repos and realy don't see a reason to upgrade even if they wouldnt buggy...
@blackoutworm Ubuntu is the popular brand no doubt, but thats changing, ppl jumping ships, stats from distrowatch were used when ubuntu was on top, not sure why ppl now say it doesnt count.
Some of the Gnome-shell extensions available for Ubuntu 11.10 (bottom panel, drop down menu for the top panel) have made Linux Mint 12 a little less something of a must-have; but having said that, the MATE menu is an interesting project and it's something I will be following and looking at.
The transparent panel at the bottom showing devices is part of Gnome-shell.
@GPEART1 I think it's because gnome 2 is more Windows looking. And what they want is to change that to give Windows users a reason to switch over.
But what they didn't take to account is that getting used to new things is not how you convince people to try it, unless it's easier and better than what they came from.
And gnome 3 is not easier nor better. The beautiful thing about linux is your ability to customize everything the way you want.
Such as Compiz effects, which gnome 3 takes away.
@blackoutworm gnome is gonna have better integration with there own effects, same as the kde kwin. Compiz is still king at effects but it can be buggy, such u can see with the unity integration.
Yes, I do agree about trying to get people to switch from windows.Personally, I feel Linux is now facing an uphill battle, as I really can't explain to anyone why is there a reason to switch from windows 7. I just switched to win7 myself, as I am pretty dis-heatened with the ubuntu-unity deal, it just lost me completely.I used to rave on about Ubuntu, now....silence.
You shouldn't change something that already works for people just for the sake of changing. What they should focus their time and skills on is improvement, bug fixing and such.
@GPEART1 : You are right, even I do not see any reason to switch from Windows 7 to Linux at home. For the first time Microsoft has done a good job in Windows 7 operating system. Also at the wrong time KDE and GNome are going through a major upgrade leaving common man to question why should I switch to Linux?
@trickstarsym hardly! its the best stable user friendly linux distro. i love it! that why i want to start using debian. but there are so few tutorials and not really a user friendly distro. :)

@JackPidwell never try that, but i dont think they made any apps themself, so i never think of them as a real distro. I could be wrong but atleast the mint folks made menu, update manager ..etc
@gotbletu what im saying is: in terms of integrating shit together and turn it to friendly user desktop manager and distro, pinguy os is way much better than mint, in oh so many ways. old harcore users of gnome 2 find it much more appealing than mint's try to do such a thing. bottom line: miint is robust, safe and all that u mentioned. i agree. but so is pinguy with a much better interface than mint. period. plus, pinguy is a beta release, like stated by the dev.
@JackPidwell the interface is alright, they just use the docky dock, plus i never understood why they have a conky stats showing cpu info ..etc, isnt the distro for average joes, why would they need to know those
@gotbletu But Mint is based on Ubuntu so will have 5 years support just like Ubuntu and is using mate, and probably I will go on this route. I would have gone with arch but I can't make my printer work with it from the last tries.

In my opinion, I think they should cut out gnome 3 completely and just focus on Mate.
I mean, having them both is gonna give Mate less resources and such.
Besides, all the other distros use gnome 3 now.
Also, the #1 distro is still Ubuntu.
I think distrowatch's ratings are actually their site views. But ubuntu is still the only distro people you ask will know what is.
And if you google search "linux" or related, Ubuntu is still mentioned Way more often than LinuxMint
