In the late 1930s, American Flyer was making 2 rail HO, 3 rail O gauge, & 3 rail Wide ( or Standard Gauge ) trains. Perhaps they chose S gauge after the war so they could make scale-sized trains that could run on an oval on a 4' X 8' foot plywood sheet. American Flyer did make 3/16 " scale trains that ran on O gauge track in the late 1930s & perhaps wanted to bring the track gauge into 3/16" scale as well when they resumed production after WW2.
i too realy think lionel was better and had alittle to offer then american flyer did american flyer down fall was thay put most of there time and intterest into S gauge trains sets thay had some o gauge trains but not many ro pick from if thay had gone with o gauge fulltime like lionel did i think thay would have lasted longer or evern still be up and running today? pepole fight about what train outfit was better back then i think there all made better then most of whats being sold today right!
i think that lionel is better then amarican flyer and that is animal curlity because the cat could have been hurt

My dad bought my oldest brother one of these trains back in 1953. I wasn't even born yet and we had that train for years.
