Don't know I want to say yeah even mac does just not as much as Windows does because Windows is bigger then Mac but Mac is fit to be tied because there selling too there mini- I-mac looks cool
i will buy tomorrow a new computer and it has linux installed, i don't know what to do..if i will like linux i may keep this OS either i'll install Vista..
this is confusing, i thought it was an operating system!! but then you install it with windows on your pc??!! this is weird, and its supposedly better? im teerrribbbleeeyyy confuesed on how this is supposed to work? like is it just working off your old system?
It is an operating system on it's own. Your just too computer illiterate to understand. You chose the option to *TRY* the Linux distribution of your choice on your windows OS before actually making it your primary OS so that you can decide whether you want to use it or not. To use it as your main OS, you have to boot your computer from the CD and install it.
cool the good thing about Linux is that it is soo sleek looking and compact tht it can run on almost anything and it also has awesome effects that use very little ram and it is also free i would like to see Linux go big sell in the stores as a popular os!!!!!!!
Unfortunately, I'm a user of relatively antique computer too. I use Mac because it's the laptop provided by my department. I like it, but if I had to buy a computer myself, I'd have to go with standard Intel+Nividia hardware with Linux just to avoid the outrageous price Apple asks for her hardware. Functionality wise, I hold no grudge against Windows, it did get the job done. But because of its market share or because of design and implementation, Windows is indeed much more exposed than linux
computer for me is just a tool, the last thing I want from my tool is for it to pull crap on me. On linux, the installation and configuration of application take more effort, but once configured, linux does perform without bowing to the constant threat of all the dirty stuff out on the internet. That's why I use linux. Windows 7 looks pretty cool, but they still need to do much more to convince me of their security.
Darn all of you computer nerds! You're turning me into one! I swear, I ask about html and now I want to learn php, mysql, java, javascript . . . I'm finding out about Linux . . . advocating for open source. Regular people don't even know what open source is! AH!!! It's happening to me! I . . . I . . . I HATE WINDOWS!!! Now you guys have me wanting to buy a new computer for myself just to run Linux. I will let my wife has the windows computer. Microsux.
Ok I just need to know If I got linux if all my hardware would work on it? For example my wireless card. It is built in. I installed windows XP a while ago and it could not support my wireless card for some reason. I downloaded all the drivers from the HP website, that card just wouldn't work. So I just need to know if it will support all of my hardware. I got my computer about a year ago( December 2007)... So can anyone help me please!
You can download Ubuntu and boot into it from the CD without installing it to see what works and whatnot. Open the Hardware Drivers under Preferences/Admin Tools
PC means Personal Computer, not Windows, you dolt. Your PC will still be a PC even if you install Linux or MacOS on it. In fact, even Macs are (and have always been) PCs.
And yes, you CAN run iTunes on Linux, by running the Windows version with Wine.
There are better alternatives, though, such as Rhythmbox and Amarok, and they work for largely the same kind of things (organizing music library, syncing iPod, etc).
Except that mis-use of technical terms by those not versed in the discipline doesn't redefine its meaning.
You could go around calling your computer the "hard drive" or your monitor "the CPU" but that wouldn't make it correct usage of the word.
Look it up in a dictionary.
FYI, the "confusion" started with Microsoft making DOS and later Windows the de-facto operating system of IBM PCs. Apple started avoiding the PC moniker to highlight their difference from IBM's PCs and compatibles.
i am having a lot of trouble getting elisa to perform anything like that, especially with compiz turned on. it pretty much does nothing for me, is there any advice you can offer in regards to something you did to get this working?
I am using a dell xps 1330 with 4gb RAM, Intel integrated graphics, and Ubuntu 8.04 32 bit
Sweet video!!! I want to start using ubuntu, I have the same video card you do, I wonder if you had any problems when running compiz fusion, did you had to install drivers? Thanks...

do you get viruses en linux?
PepeFabos 2 years ago
not really, because they don't have the possibilities to spread like in windoze....
but it is possible that you may download some of them by fault and then you are dangerous for windoze clients in your (home) network.....
that's all I know about virusses on linux based operating systems

You could either dual boot or run Wubi. There are many guides on how to do both online. Ubuntu 9.04 comes out tomorrow.

they dont call it windows because thats a copyrighted and they cant say that on tv
zchryfrk 3 years ago 2
People that don't know anything about computers or are under copyright laws call Windows PC's.
But not people that know what they are talking about.
Which is not you.
Linux is basically Windows,
and then some.

Don't worry about drivers. They come with the OS. To enable them, go to System>Administration>Hardware Drivers. Your drivers should be there.
