Remember these trains very well. They had a fantastic bright orange/yellow interior & very quiet engines. They made a funny sound when the air from the brakes was released (like panpipes!).
I dont know about more footage of that stock. To a certain extent I goofed with this rolling stock, because I did not pay enough attention to it, and it was replaced sort of without my realising it.
Very short lived, like the Watford Joint Stock and the 9 car trains on the Northern Line..
The 83 T/S has indeed all been scrapped except for 6 cars still sitting in South Harrow sidings, strewn with graffiti. These will be removed by the end of 2007. Willesden Green Met platforms are used when the Jubilee is suspended if the controller deems it necessary but it will degrade the Metropolitan timetable. It would have to be a dire consequence. Prior to 1977 this was a Bakerloo and Metropolitan station.
What a waste, scrapping trains barely out of their youth. Yes I know the reason why. Nevertheless I would have kept them in storage somewhere for emergency use. Yes, I know, it costs... but (for instance) what about the cost of the disruption when the Central line was closed a few years ago? (because of motors falling off)
Thanks, oh what that must have been like at that speed, I expect the bogies were hunting like mad!
That would be very good of you but anyway look forward to seeing more of your videos as they are extremely good. It is just a pity that Youtube's reproduction is not the "best" but then it is a free service!
when you say 'all stops' do you mean the stations which are normally served by the Jubilee Line?
yes this was the policy - both early morning and late at night - with (I think) the Met trains travelling on the Jubilee tracks. As I dont normally use this route I dont know if it still applies, although I understand that RfL want to stop this because the difference in train size means that the larger trains are not wheelchair accessible.
What I know, the "Met trains on the Jubilee line" service is no longer practiced, not because of wheelchair issues. The use of regenerative brakes for Jubilee trains means that A stock would suddenly "jackrabbit" due to the spike in voltage when a '96 brakes. And, also the use or intended use of Automatic Train Operation, which couldn't handle "non-ATO" trains being in use at the same time (they can't even have 6 car and 7 car trains at once, they closed the line to upgrade things).
that was in the early 1980's - sorry before the days of videotape. But i might have something on super 8 cine, I will look and see if it can be copied to video.
yet another excellent clip and brings back memories of when sometimes if the Met drivers were up for it back in the 70s they raced the dmus all the way from climb up to Kilburn to Wembley park. The A stock could do over 60 if necessary in those days! However, you had to hold on to your seats!!
that must have gone suome but I think you must be right because on the level we did keep up with the old dmus so 70+ is probably correct. How boring now sticking to 50mph but I suppose the power equipment is now getting on for 40 years old.
I understand that once the S (for 'standing room only) stock trains come in the A stock will be reduced to 40mph... but at least therese trains will offer their passengers some seats...
many years ago when there was a Boxing day service to Amersham that missed out many stops en route I enjoyed a southbound (downhill) run where I feel sure we touched 80mph!
Seems weird that the 1983 stock featured here all went for scrap about 10 years later and that the A60/62 stock on the met (the fast one in the vid) are still going! Excellent vid
door problems - it was realsied that the single leaf doors made station stops longer, so when the line was extended and new trains were needed they replaced the whole lot.
I think attempts were made to use them elsewhere, but obviously nothing happened.
The 'Watford Joint Stock' of the early 1920's also only lasted little more than a decade.

Very interesting. I see that this used to be a general stop for more trains, the side platforms look abandonned.

As far as I know the side platforms are rarely used.
For many years the Hainualt - Woodford branch of the Central line was served buy a mix of automatic and human driven trains.
The 1960 and 1967 stocks were computer driven, the 1962 stock was human driven.

I remember that late in the evening, the Metropolitan Line made all stops. Is that pattern still in effect?

I once had 71mph out of A stock heading north towards Wembley. Now the official limit is 50 and they mostly stick to that

They would have made ideal replacements for the '38 stock on the Isle of Wight!
