replacing a 5.2 magnum in my 97 dodge van...I was just checking the that pan when I pulled my intake manifold off and wondering about changing it...so I decided to see if anyone posted a video...thanks!
thanks for the vid. Although my 95 GC 5.2 runs well it gets poor gas mileage 13.7. And has a rough idle and shakes a little at low RPMs. I can image what the plenum looks like. Can't wait to tackle this job and get it over with.
Great video. Normally I crap on videos that are just pictures but I get the gist of what you are explaining in the video. And for a few people complaining about the video not being detailed enough, you're nuts. Honestly if you know your way around an engine this video was enough.
Have a question. my 99 Ram was in the shop last July for the plenum. The intake bolts were broken and I think the guy forgot the plenum. Blew through 5ltrs of oil in 2 months, no blue smoke, burning clean. Plenum?
Thanks alot for the video. I am very mechanically inclined and wasnt afraid to dive into this but your information was very helpful since you have performed this repair before and i am more familiar with chevy smallblocks. I lost alot of vaccuum, it is smoking at an idle only and i have a pinging under acceleration. I have heard people say that you wont believe the difference with this repair and i am hoping so. Thanks again.
Thanks for the vid, I just replaced my gasket with this kit, I replaced it because my truck would stall and when I would go and start it it's a pinging and knocking noise like there's no oil getting to the top of the right side bank. I have a video about it on my channel. But other then oh and my oil pressure gauge goes no higher then 40psi and usually around 20 at idle. I think I used 10w30 pennzoil in mine, but I think that's the problem. I might have to go to 5w30.semi synthetic
Thanks for making the video. I'm in the UK (where these engines are hardly known) and have ordered the Hughes kit as a result of watching this. It arrived today so will be setting to work tomorrow - wish me luck!
Very well done video. It shows the oil spillage around the alternator, it shows clearly that the fuel rail does not need to be disturbed, and it offers good suggestions on maintenance and most of all how to permanently fix the issue. Very good work, now show me how to replace my head gasket in the same manner so I can feel safe doin a top end gasket replacement
Thanks for the vid. I'll probably have to do mine (5.2) fairly soon. Get some pinging under hard acceleration up hill, and have a rough idle, or slight miss at low RPMs on the highway. Cleaned the EGR because it was triggering a CEL but I know the plenum gasket is probably due for a change since it's approaching 200k miles.
you know I think dodges look really good and now that I have owned a few there gettin pretty easy to work on,BUT the engines are uglier than fuck!!!as long as u keep hood shut nice soon as you open hood damn its the headless engine even the cold air intakes look like a poped ballon or somethin....
@ShawnMc749 if it's pinging all the time, you may have a lot of carbon build up. Look up seafoaming an engine and also clean your throttle body. How many miles are on it?
@sideburns2009 I tried the Seafoam. 1/3 bottle in intake hose (from brake booster), but only 1/3 in oil and tank. It didn't help. I may try more in the tank and oil, but I'm sure it's either the plenum gasket or EGR that causing a rough idle. I've cleaned the EGR once and it stopped triggering a CEL. I think a new one is in order, but they range $150 for them online. Anyone know where to find a deal on these EGRs?
So, if intake plenum is gone the pinging is only under load? I've got a 318ci and I hear pinging when at idle speeds, no matter engine temp or how long its been on. Before and after oil change.
Could this be plenum as well? It is consuming a bit of oil, but barely any. Like were taking lower on the dipstick maybe a few mm over a few months...
im gettin ready to get dirty on saturday with a 99 durango with the 318 i have to strip the top end off cause the number 5 an 7 cylinders have low or no compersion got any tips for me
Your right I have no business trying this. Im glad I didnt, i was a getting shudder feeling when cruizing around 40 mph or more just barely giving it any gas. I put some lucas oil in it and it has since then gotten better.
listen brother if you would have took your time and made like a 9 minute step by step video that would really help someone like me out and im pretty sure im not alone. I mean like even a couple arrows pointing to what ever your talking about.
I gurantee you know what your doing and talking about. But i just purchased my first truck 2001 5.9l v8 140k miles. I would like to take peak and see if my engine is doing the same thing.
@Mojoboy1818 uhh that's exactly what this video is. Step by step and tips, with pics highlighted. If you need more detail than I gave you here, then you don't need to be taking your engine apart by yourself. You also don't have to take your engine apart to know if you have a blown gasket. Does it ping under acceleration? Does it burn oil excessively?
@sideburns2009 my 1999 durango 5.2L is doing that now with the ping under power and i do see alittle bit loss of oil as ai check it i wasnt sure if it was a lifter or what the sound was comeing from the driver side of the motor but this vido comfirms what the issue was
The real reason the gasket fails is because Dodge used a steel plate on an Aluminum manifold. The expansion rates are different causing the gasket to fail. There is a kit that replaces the bottom steel plate with an aluminum one and it will never fail again.
just curious - i may have this wrong but if its the plenum that is thin and warps (happens in my GP also) what is it in the kit that will solve the problem if you are not replacing the intake manifold/plenum? Like i said, i may have missed something so just asking.
@smazz104 It's not the plenum that's thin and warps. It's the pan that bolts onto the bottom of the plenum to cover up the hole on the bottom. It's thin aluminum and warps causing the gasket to blow out and it sucks oil from the valley (where the lifters/camshaft sit) The plenum has a hole because it's such a big piece, it has to be casted with a hole whereas smaller plenums do not. Remember that it acts as the upper and lower intake, there is no seperate lower intake manifold like some others.
@fourak1 A gasket scraper. Be sure to cover the intake holes by stuffing shop towels in them or duct taping them shut. There is also a oil inlet hole on the left side, towards the front. Prevent any debris from falling into these.
@fourak1 the only thing that is aluminum is the intake itself. there is only 2 pieces of cork gasket, on the block front and back. I guess you mean any of the gasket material. Just keep it at an angle and don't gouge the metal with the scraper. That's why they say don't use stuff like that I guess. I don't remember reading that. I just went at it and had great results. You probably won't get it all off with just your hands. What instructions are you reading?
did this work well on ur truck and is there anyway to tell if the gasket blewout without tearin the whole intake apart cause mine burns oil and ticks but i dont want to do all that and then find out that wasint the problem.
@94dodgedakota39l Yes, it worked well. The main 2 symptoms are pinging and spark knock when you accelerate and under an engine load (going up a hill, etc) and using a lot of oil. How many miles are on it and does it tick the entire time it's running? There is a way to tell with a vacuum gauge on a vacuum line, if you'd like I can let you know the procedure.
@sideburns2009 ya it ticks all the time and knocks sometimes it has about 125xxx on it and the oil consumption has stayed relativly the same over the year iv owned it it burns oil pretty bad but it has decent compression and doesent smoke a lot when its started so i dont think its the rings or valves.
@sideburns2009 if i look down into the plenum through the throttle body of my 01 ram it is slightly dirty. i can still see aluminum. should this be squeaky clean in there or will this typically get a little grime in there over the years? the truck has 99000 miles on it
@sideburns2009 no it doesn't ping. i just changed my oil two days ago so i will keep an eye on my oil level. when i bought my truck i noticed the rear main seal was bad as ive seen on many dodges. could oil consumption be attributed to this as well? and also how do i know if i have an egr valve?
@andeb3002 yes, the rear main seal will leak oil. I've never seen one leak on a magnum engine though. The egr valve is on the rear, driver side of the intake plenum. It will have a metal hose going to it and it will be round. Being a 2001 it probably has one, it could also depend on where the truck was built and intended to sell.
@sideburns2009 it doesnt have one. can you explain to me what pinging sounds like exactly? my truck doesnt smoke like its burning oil at all and i dont think it pings but im not exactly sure what im listening for
@andeb3002 mine didn't smoke one bit either but still used 2 quarts per oil changing. Ping is sort of like a tick noise. Pinging is really the best way to describe it. Pennies rattling in a small tin can? Not the best description. It's just a rattling noise under the hood during acceleration, under load like going up hill, and when at highway speed and the torque converter locks up...that's usually when it does it.
@MrShanerocks123 I'm not really sure. Just check the newspaper ad's for private sellers, because that is where the cheapest ones will be. Not from dealers.

OK time to buy a gasket remover tool.
I broke on of the heads off, when I removed the intake manifold. Got any advice on stud removal?
THANKS
