Wonderful! Great reading!
I've often thought of the two opening paragraphs of War of the Worlds as among the most frightening in English literature. It's so much more than just bugbears and bogeymen - Wells could wield irony over the mind of the unsuspecting reader like a scalpel over an unanesthetized patient.
